Gnarls Barkley Crazy Spaghetti Western 1968 sample source

This movie soundtrack (available on CD) starting at about 2:25 is the source music for the sample that Gnarls used for the background in the song "Crazy" (I included the main titles...the music (By GF Reverberi)appears in the film several times...the exact track is usually buried in dialogue so you can't here the music. I chose this sequence even though its slower and in a different key but you can easily tell its the same. DMouse didn't use the trumpet part but you can hear the violins ("does that make me CRAY...ZAY?"). From what I've learned its very possible that the actual sample was take from a library 45 rpm record and the producers of "Crazy" may be as suprised to know that this is the actual source of the library recording. Not trying to accuse anyone of anything...just making an observation. I LOVE the Gnarls version and felt really privileged that I somehow knew this song before I heard their version

You still have to be pretty damn talented to mix songs like this. You would've never thought it was sampled from a western. And few ideas are original, regardless.

I just noticed..these Spaghetti Westerns from the 60s 70s..the main characters are never completely good or bad..they have special skills for some reason beyond their control..They didn't earn them or want them...they just have them. They wish they could be normal but are put into extreme situations and now have to deal with it using their skills which they would rather not have been given...sounds like today's SUPERHERO movies...

"Fistful.." defined the genre but even music composer Ennio Morricone scored two westerns scores before: "Gunfight At Red Sands" aka Duello Nel Texas (1963) and Pistols Don't Argue aka Pistole Non Discutono (prior to "Fistful" in 1964) But I agree "Per Un Pugno Di Dollari" is the first SIGNIFICANT Italian Western

I don't know why you don't think this was original. He did flip this into being one of the biggest hits the last ten year. Sampling is a way of making music alot of people don't understand. Actually, sampling can be very hard for most people. Cause they don't know where to dig, what to use or whatever...

@NineTailsDemonFox I just listened to several versions of the song. The bass does go over it a little. It is off kay as this was not the version sampled. Just look up Nel Cimitero Di Tucson. That's the most probable sample source. Still, listen to that violin. Same melody. The singing is also based around it with a little innovation to it. The trumpet melody plays the same thing. Just listen to the violin in Crazy and this back to back. You'll hear it.

Agree 100%. I was not sure who wrote Crazy, until recently, but every time I heard it I loved it. When I did find out who performed it, I immediately went out an bought it. I have been playing it nearly non-stop, not really knowing what it was about the song that hooked me. Now, I know. Great song. Great movie genre. There is a clip on youtube from "Cowboy Bebop AMV" set to the song which is really cool.

For @FairDealDan and those seeking the sample: it is straight from the track "Nel cimitero di Tucson" from the album "Preparati la bara!", the original soundtrack by Gianfranco & Gianpiero Reverberi.

The name "Spaghetti Western" is because they were directed & financed by Italian film studios, following the Hollywood genre, but with a greater level of realism. This is opposed to the "singing cowboys" like Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers etc.fantasy movies. Mostly they were filmed in Almeria, Spain - the only desert in Europe, filling in for New Mexico, The High Sierras etc. Many of the Hollywood western exterior shots were filmed in California - it saved location costs that way. I hope that helps.

@malightcommander Dr No, the first Bond picture, used rotoscoping in the opening credits, but in the world of the Italian Western rotoscoping was popularised by the opening credits of Leone's A Fistful of Dollars. After that picture, nearly every Italian Western seemed to use rotoscoping in its opening credits sequence. The Italian Westerns that most referred to the James Bond films were the Sartana pictures (due to the character's use of gadgets) and the 'Tricky Dicky' pictures.

@NineTailsDemonFox No one gives credit to a movie. They aren't sampling a movie. They are sampling a soundtrack to a movie. It writes: Contains elements from "Last Men Standing" written by Gianfranco Reverberi/Gianpiero Reverberi. It also writes: The sample of "Last Men Standing" is courtesy of BMG Zomba Production Music Ltd. Used by permission. In the original Italian they titled it Nel Cimitero Di Tucson. In the English dub they gave it a title reminiscent of the scene it's used in.

@superjet113 Actually they credit it as a sample. The violin you hear on this track is the same in Crazy. As for it sounding different. They added bass to it. They sampled it but they also added to the final mix. Another example would be David McCallum's The Edge (unless I'm mistaken).

All art imitates art, as an artist I am influenced by other art I see and hear. Even in stuff that I want to be purely original, I subconsciously draw according to stuff I've seen. Ask any artist. Sampling is just the rawest form of that, you are taking a piece of art and making it into another piece. As long as the sampling artist doesn't claim to be the original artist, then it is ok

@NineTailsDemonFox . . . and they weren't underoath or anything like that. Wait, musicians aren't underoath to do that anyway. Are they? Do you know? Eh? And once again, the recording that Dangermouse sampled is in the video "Nel Cimitero Di Tucson". That actually contains a much more solid guitar sound and the same tempo from Crazy. And the same violin part heard in the chorus to "Crazy". If you bothered to open those ears of yours I wouldn't feel the need to mention it.
