Re-uploaded due to some audio issues
This is the fifth video in a series covering the basics of GNav for ATPL students. In particular this is the second half of convergency, covering the convergency between rhumb lines & great circles, and conversion angle.
This series of GNav Basics also includes:
Video 1: • GNav Basics 1: Lat/Lon... . Refresher on Latitude & Longitude
Video 2: • GNav Basics 2: All Ab... . The Departure Formula
Video 3: • GNav Basics 3: Great ... . Great Circles & Rhumb Lines
Video 4a: • GNav Basics 4a: Conve... . Convergency (part 1); Earth Convergency.
As ever, if you've found this video helpful then I'd greatly appreciate it if you could give it a thumbs up - and subscribe to the channel if you're not already. And if you've got ideas for future videos, please leave them in the comments below.

I have to say, I went through so many vids on YT including a guy who basically wrote EASA questions (that's what he said), and based on your vid I finally got it...The best way of explaining it. Thanks!

The explanation is so clear that it helps a fresher to start with these videos directly with very little knowledge. Honestly, I was trying to figure out questions themselves. let alone answers. The tips given in between the explanations are so helpful, I could understand the concept more clearly.

Luckily my helicopter would run out of fuel 3 times over before calculating a GCR became a factor and most of my flying was at the equator (where 1° lat/long is 60nm no matter which way you turn). That allowed me to dodge the topic for many years, but your videos finally made me grasp trigonometry - 25 years after doing it in high school! Thank you for creating such terrific content, you're a natrual born instructor!

You are better than my flight school instructor 👍 But one doubt, when we should add or subtract the conversation angle
@samiben7244
@samiben7244 3 года назад
Depending on if you are going FROM GC to RL and in what hemisphere you are in. For instance, if you have the GC track and the CA in SH and you need the RL to think in what direction you are going. you need to go UP, therefor your answer will need to be a lower number (so you need to subtract) like the guy in the video said, draw it and you will see it. draw a compass rose beside it with the NWSE numbers on it, then you can approximate your answer that way you will quickly see if you need to add or subtract. Good luck

I am confused, at 9:03 We are in the southern hemisphere and travelling east so because of DI, ID, How come we do not minus the CA? to get 48 degrees instead of 132?

Because we are measuring the angle at A , GC > RLT . So RLT +CA . I hope I'm not too late 😅

If you mean the answers to the questions, I would always advise against just memorising the answers. Sometimes they use the same numbers in a different order, or will change a positive number to a negative- so you think you know which answer to choose but it will actually be wrong.

in the 5th question where GC a to b is 47 deg ..... why are you considering the convergency value and not conversion angle . also the question asks GC b to a so why are you showing the value of RL a to b as the answer?
