Once I saw 'Midsommar' I immediately realized that there are so many common thing sbetween Slavic (before Christianity) and Nordic culture. For example the Vikings series do not show this kind of similarity. In fact the lace they have on the clothes, the traditions connected to 'Mother Nature', flower wreaths, arts they have on the walls etc are soooo close to what Slavic culture has.
Coming from a more slavic region in germany. There is also simularity to the old germanic culture. They all had things in comon but then christianity destroyed most of it.
The guy who founded Kievian Rus is Varangian prince Rurik. The Varangian people are from Nordic. Also the Anglo-Saxon people, Germanic people and the Vikings in fact share a lot in common in culture especially in proto polytheism.
@@jshdunisperfect1944 There are actually more similarities than you can imagine since these cultures (that also goes for languages) were evolving and coexisting next to each other.
I do agree on that we are more similar than we sometimes think (Slavic and Nordic culture). However the Midsommar movie is not very accurate in depicting the tradition of midsommar, they took the concept and some elements of it but then mixed and made up the rest to make interesting movie. For example the clothing they are wearing is not traditional Swedish, it looks more eastern European to me. I think they filmed it in Hungary and it looks like they got some of inspiration of the aesthetic from there.
When I watched Midsommar for the 1st time, first thing I thought was that clothes, embroidery, wreaths and round dances were very similar to Ukrainian midsummer soltice celebration (Kupala). But we do not kill anybody (at least nowadays)😜
Midsommar is probably my favourite film ever, and Shum is one of the best songs produced in the last decade or so. Whoever had the brilliance to put them together deserves a medal. It was like they were completely made for each other.
привіт я не українець але я розумію що україна нормальна країна просто там є погані люди які бомбили донбас і деякі в україні це заслуговують але не ти
I'm from Ukraine and damn that was beautiful. I like horror movies like Midsommar and I like traditional Ukrainian music. These two combined are just perfect especially because "Vesnyanka" is a ritual song for celebrating spring. Also Ukrainians and Swedes share the same history because of the Vikings that's why Scandinavian people had paganism like us :)

thats kinda disrespectful these are two diffrent elements of two diffrent cultures yet you see/hear something remotly ethnic and go ah yes lets compare this to the holywood rendering of nordic folklore shum is about waking up the spring and has nothing to do with human sacrafices let me just say that as a slav we find it really annoying, please stop
@@allmightygay4395 as a Slav you must be delusional not to see the resemblance, let alone the fact that the costume designer of Midsommar was a Hungarian who used Slavic folk costumes in the movie
@@allmightygay4395 as a Slav, I don’t see why are you pressed about this. When I watched Midsommar for the first time, I was taken aback by how similar it seemed to Slavic cultures. And no, there is no historical evidence of sacrifices in pagan Swedish culture. It was all just added for the movie based on legends. I can totally see this song fitting well with the theme of the movie, and I’m surprised you cannot.
@@Censz well thats just another thing that doesnt add up then as Hungarians are not slavs, and why use slavic folk costumes as inspiration for a movie wchich was meant to portray nordic cultures? obviously there are simmilarities between nordic and slavic cultures, we coexistet for centuries and our cultures overlap at many points but its still important to portray them accurately and not use themes from them interchangably in conclusion: yes, they are simmiliar but im not gonna by happy that my culture is misrepresented in a movie that cant even stay 100% true to its orginal inspiration
@@drunkieowl2207 i would like my culture represented accurately and not just mixed up with anything beacuse it "fits" go_a did fantastic job with bringing some modernity to old songs and making it more known, especialy for younger generations who never had a chance to hear it from their grandmothers but why not use their work in a movie about actual slavic culture? the fact that there were no human sacrafices and that was just added for "the creeps" is just another turn off for me if holywood pricks want to use folklore in that way then they better stay away from it
And these people laughed on their TV from Go_A song and our traditions to dance, when they actually have almost the same moves! Btw this movie is horror, but as for me connection with Go_A song is very good, because their dance suits to the lyric and somehow similar to the traditional danсe of Kupala
As a Swede, I guarantee you I've never heard another Swede laugh at Shum. In fact, pretty much every person here who watched eurovision this year is obsessed with the song and the cultural connection and tradition.
@@Karasuno86 I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about, but if you mean the live eurovision commentators, the Swedish commentator is known for his shady comments and making lighthearted fun of basically all of the entries. I don't remember if he said anything specific about Shum, but if that's what you're talking about, then it was most likely a joke that didn't actually mean anything and might have been lost in translation or sound harsher out of context. I tried to see if I could find what he said anywhere, but I can't seem to find it. If you would care to tell me exactly what was said, I'd be interested to hear it.
У меня мурашки были на протяжении всего клипа, а в конце зашлась истеричными слезами. Настолько меня впечатлил фильм и покорила сердце песня, что их сочетание возымело такой эффект. Запоминающаяся робота.
@@Mozzarella-and-Tomato this is (how I understood, or just for me) a horror movie. And yeaaah. If you want, you can watch it, but I saw a video "all deaths from it" and.... There was a dude with a cut back and ribs outside, suspended from the ceiling. So... If you want, just warning
@@vlada_halva this is a horror movie and can become quite graphic at times but I think the main focus of the horror is on the disturbing elements of the story and not so much on the gore
@@Mozzarella-and-Tomato basically this is a horror movie. it's disturbing in many ways besides the gore and the group we see is actually a cult twisting beliefs/traditions to justify stuff like murder and holding people hostage. They also have their own thing going on, but to lure people they hide under innocent, already existing/old beliefs/traditions. there's definitely a deeper meaning, but I stopped watching because I was gonna throw up lol
I’m from a slavic country and this is such a beautiful song! Well, I don’t understand the whole text but I still understand some words and it has beautiful meaning and it has so much to do with our culture… To be honest I feel kinda sad that most Americans and non-slavic people know almost nothing about our culture… I wish I could fix that somehow….- - Annie Pencheva (no one famous or anything.)
Maybe, it's good that America and Western Europe do not know nothing about our ancient culture and traditions...Thus we have a chance to save and preserve our unique Slavic culture and to remain Slavs in this multicultural cosmopolitan world...
so, what we need to know about ur culture. Im from Colombia and now, im very interested about it. .what i need to read ? or watch? or listen? just say it !
My name is Annie, I am from the USA and I feel similar feelings! People in America are more focused in blacks and Hispanics and other ethnicities that Slavic people, when I mention it to other people most don’t know we exist! I am pert Czech and Slovak and swell as German, a lot of people think I am Russian or Ukrainian.
Shum is a beautiful rendition of traditional songs for the sake of art. The dances in Midsommar are performed FOR A CULT that brainwashes and murders its members.
Well yes, but actually no. Shum is more like Walpurgis night than Midsummer. Walpurgis can look a bit like that... even tho without human sacrifices. For example we call it Burning of the witches, because burning of [usually made of hay or straw] Morana, witch of winter.
@@emapelikanova478 shum is a Веснянка- literally “Spring song” that ALL the people used to sing. Stop twisting Slavic culture with your stupid western shit that has no connection with east-Europeans
No mater the different roots, I find it interesting how Europeans of all stripes look at this and are like "yeah, I feel this." So from the Ukrainian plains to the Western lowlands up to Scandinavia, there is something folksy, weird and energetic we all share.

Can you explain what ritual is going on here? I’m seeing that it’s Ukrainian, Swedish, and some sort of ritual to summon spring. Also saw something about a cult. It’s confusing.
@@giojett1623 The movie is about Swedish folk holiday. The song is Ukrainian, not about that folk celebration. People see similarities between two different cultures.
