We tasted 10 Burgundy/Bourgogne Pinot Noirs mainly from well known wineries such as Louis Jadot, Faiveley, Joseph Drouhin, Domaine A.F. Gros, etc. You will continue to see the best price-quality Bourgogne Pinot Noirs!
It's very comforting (and interesting) to see the $20-$17 wines hold their own and even beat the more expensive wines. This is good. It makes wine a lot more approachable.
Thanks Peter for mentioning the cost to the planet. I’ve always loved how you both speak about wines, but this is even more important. Takes courage (even if it shouldn’t). Thanks again.
Just grabbed 2 bottles of the 2018 Louis Jadot Pinot Noirfor $18 each. Its 10 in the morning but I couldn't wait to try it. Please don't judge me HAHAHA .Excellent value. You guys are the best.
Hello Jay. My wife and I are loving your channel. I searched but haven’t seen reviews on California Pinot Noirs. I would like to see a reviewer comparing different American Pinot Noirs. Keep the good work!
Ha! - 'it's always the expensive wines' that have issues. You two are so impressive with your knowledge. I know what I'm going to 'run out' and buy now! Merci beaucoup.
I've enjoyed the Jadot Bourgogne Rouge many times, and I've had the Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge as well. I totally agree with your responses to both -- great value for very good wine! The only other Faiveley I've had is the 2018 Mercurey La Framboisière, which I think was $80. That one didn't seem overpriced to me, but Faiveley has so many that I see how this can be a problem sometimes. Thanks for this great session...!
No surprise the better entry level wines came from the big and reputable producers. Louis Jadot and Faiveley make solid wines. Those prices are amazing!
Some translations from French: Moin = Less, Moine = Monk. Nice tasting and good comments about the wines. I will try the wines of Jadot. Just checked my wine store and they sell it. Greetings from Flanders, the Dutch speaking part of Belgium.
Lucien Lemoine (meaning Lucien the monk) is actually a burgundy "négoce" society made by a lebanese guy named Mounir Saouma. He also created the "clos Saouma" domain in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
I love that Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge. I think the 2019 is even better than the 2018. The Faiveley Gevery-Chambertin is also excellent. Both of those were my picks for Thanksgiving. The bottle of Gevery-Chambertin I got was a 2015 though.
Jay, there's a red wine in a very heavy bottle that I think is excellent value. It's related, in a way, to a much cheaper wine that you reviewed positively. It's a Monastrell blend, "Clio", by Bodegas El Nido. It's made by an Australian, Chris Ringland, at a winery adjacent to the Juan Gil winery in Jumilla.
I so often wonder how the return process works for corked wines. Especially ones that cost a lot of money. As Peter said they will probably give you a hard time, and I would imagine they might want to taste it themselves to make sure it really is corked, and while that shouldn't be subjective, I would imagine people selling wines worth a lot of money might be inclined to act like they're not corked when they are. It must be an awkward exchange that I'm glad I have never had to have... but also...strangely it's unfortunate that I've never had to have that experience because I don't get to regularly buy and taste a bunch of expensive bottles of wine lol. Come to think of it I'd gladly trade those few-and-far-between moments of awkwardness for a lifetime of buying and tasting great wines 😫
I found the Jadot Bourgogne and the Faiveley Bourgogne as well (Total Wine). They both were good but I liked Faiveley a little more as the WineKings said!
You could do a program with wines from Argentina, there are excellent wines, especially Malbec and Torrontes, which for me are the best of them. world in those variety of grapes. Thank you
For just extra $10 you could get a 2019 Faiveley Mercurey Vieilles Vignes, which in my opinion a much better wine and at least you know where the grapes come from. When bottle says "Bourgogne, those grapes could have been sourced from anywhere in that region, but for the one I mentioned, you know exactly where they were harvested and it's just a much better showing, even though aroma was very good for the one you suggested, but finish was lacking. Thanks.
Le Moine is négoce renowned for only producing ~100 barrels per year solely from 1er and Grand Crus. The Bourgogne white/red (the fruit source(s) is never disclosed) have always been a bit of a mystery to me and have often been disappointing. The higher level Crus are often spectacular and remain relatively decent value for money vs other domaine bottlings. They get vastly superior with age as well.
There is one even cheaper - Jean Bouchard Bourgogne Pinot Noir. It should be on par with the Lous Jadot. Not sure how easy it is to find it in US, but I managed to pay about 13 - 14 dollars for it. It is a really pleasant wine to drink.
Lemoine (le moine) means The monk. So it does not mean less, but in french the adjective related to moine, "monacal" (monastic) is used to decribe something austere, ascetic, and minimalistic.
Going to repeat myself, but I would really love to see a video comparing Franciacorta and Champagne, at price point…being analyzed by you two experts should be the wine’s honor! Thank a lot!
Lucien Le Moine is one of my favourite value wines especially the premier and grand cru range. Their village wines have lesser value perhaps because of the bottle. The Bourgogne sells for 18 euros so I guess the US distributor enjoys a hugh margin.
I’d love to see that too, but don’t even let Peter see the the boxes sitting there, so he doesn’t pre-judge 😊 and mix in 1-2 bottled wines just as an immediate comparison
For me it's always Jadot or Drouhin, or small producers like François Trapet or Alain Burguet in Gevrey Chambertin. i never had a bad Jadot for example, very stable winemaking. Drouhin is a little less stable, but overall quality is very good i like Lucien Boillot too, it's a little random but i had a few good bottles. Try out red Chassagne-Montrachet i love it, it's mostly a white wine village, but the few reds they produce are very good, like "Ducs de Magenta"
I prefer this way. Before they would talk over each other and the videos took too long. This way is more organized, cleaner, faster and Peter gets more space to be funny.
How about a blind tasting comparing new and old world pinot noirs? I live in a pinot noir region (Central Otago, NZ) and would love to see how we stack up to Burgundy pinot noirs in a blind comparison!
I HATE when an expensive wine is corked. One of the most frustrating things for a wine lover... Big fan of Faiveley too! You should have thrown a Meomi in to make Peter mad LOL
Interesting that in a lot of your tastings some of the high priced wines are not worth it to you both or just simply flawed. It seems to show that there's a gamble in spending a lot! It would be interesting to do a follow-up to the Bordeaux tasting with all value picks (without telling Peter, or tricking him) to see what he thinks. It's also a bummer that I search for a lot of the wines you taste and they are not available in my market in Canada! Jadot is quite big and available to me, I will try a bottle of the Jadot Bourgogne and maybe the Beaujolais at one point! For the viewers, one of my favourite values I've had is Roche de Bellene!
Merci pour la vidéo ! Pour moi Jadot, Drouhin et dans une autre mesure faiveley sont vraiment de belle maisons sérieuse et efficaces, mais ells participent également à la standardisation des goûts , dur dilemme...
What do you do with all those bottles afterwards? Do you just spill it away? It's impossible to drink all of those 10 bottles, but you can't store it either
I just acquired the Louis Jadot. the man handed me a bottle from the box he was restocking with and than fetched me the Perrin Les Sinards châteaunuf du pape 2018, will report back following the weekend
The Pino I acquired was actually a 2019 but it was great! I shared it with family and they appreciated its price to quality and will seek out more bottles. Thanks 👍
@@Lk77ful I mean it's all relevant .. and a price just reflects the market not the quality. But yea it was one of the least expensive ones and it was punching well above its price point. I worked at a winery and it was amazing how the power of suggestion can make or break people's perceptions
