Go Gently Episode 8 - Lets Chat About Materials

Its time to geek out with me! I am fascinated by materials, their properties, abilities, and our relationship to them. We have developed a very throwaway nature to the things and items we interact with, but all things are made from raw materials, a lot of which are non renewable and will one day run out.
I really want to inspire you to be as in love with materials as I am, so we treat our processions and everyday items with respect and reverence.
In this video I scratch the surface on how to begin evaluating the material value and recyclability of the items around us. Think of it as a 101 on materials and an introduction to one of the topics in my upcoming book Go Gently.
Love from your fellow Earthling,
Bonnie Wright

Labour saving convenience is the disease. Recycling and upcycling are part of the cure. The sad thing is that people are so busy, for the most part: they don't 'have time' to think about things, and they just fall into habits that favour the labour saving convenient approach. Even materials that are recycled or upcycled might eventually wear out, so the battle may be won but the war against waste is not over. That is where the concept of value proves especially handy. How much is a thing really worth to you? Do you *really* need it in your life? Can you do without it, or make do with something else in its stead? All of this is important to consider. Well done, Bonnie, for your efforts to engender such consideration!

My Question: Hi Bonnie. A lot of the people I know don't really care about the climate and it can be quite frustrating, because it's such an huge crisis. How can I handle the hopelessness, when I feel like nobody cares? (Also, I love your channel. So inspiring!!!)

I bought your book for my wife’s 48th wedding anniversary present. We are both environmentalists and do all we can to recycle, reduce energy, reduce green house gases, basically do what we can when we can. Your comment about every piece of plastic you’ve ever touched is still here is what sold me; our number one effort is to reduce what plastic we use to zero. And I could not forget to let you know we have both read the HP books AT LEAST four times and probably seen the movies more!

I remember reading about throwing things 'away' and the writer explaining there is no 'away' really, it's all here on our earth! Since moving to a remote Scottish island I've become much more aware of waste, as we have no way of recycling cardboard here, and I just cannot put it in the bin!! I've ended up composting brown cards, and buying a shredder to shred the coloured card and use as bedding for our chickens. Also using cardboard as weed mats around the base of trees we are planted around our land!

I must say - I live in a village in germany at the east coast and the composting and recycling options here are optimal. Crops are grown and harvested here on fields, that means more local products, there are containers for clothes, glass, trash and paper and the best thing is, that everywhere where a bench is, theres also a trash can next to it.

Great valuable Chat Bonnie. My main concern is the over use of fertilizers, and pesticides. It saddens me to see so many houses around me and all over the world are polluting the world with this propaganda of intoxicating the lands for protection which is doing totally the opposite. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your love and activism towards helping our planet heal.

This is my fave topic and I wish more people talked about reuse and recycling. In my opinion, EVERYONE should have at least some knowledge about this and tried to live a bit differently, more green and gently. And now I'm getting interested in 'materials' that I use too. Looking forward to getting more enlightened, thanks for all the useful information and 'go gently' . 💚

this episode was very interesting, congratulations! I agree there's massive misinformation about recycling of materials.. I hear constantly people saying it's okay I buy this stuff, I will recycle it! It would be much better if we didn't buy it on the first place! It would also be great if reparing and mending was an easy option: in my garage we have a cementery of toasters: there is this tiny little piece that always breaks and it's impossible to replace, and no one in my town will fix the toaster! :( it's very sad that it's always so much cheaper to buy new rather than repair the old.

(Contains questions for the upcoming Q&A video) This video reminded me of this - *"Once you label me, you negate me." - Søren Kierkegaard* Dear Bonnie, knowing that I can't commend and thank you and your videos enough, I would straightaway say that this video is by far the best I've watched on your channel. For me, it truly was the virtual glimpse of your approaching book with you topping it up with that brief reading during the last minutes. I loved the part where you enthusiastically educated us about segregation of materials surrounding us and the different ways they can be treated when discarded, but for me, the equation 'Waste = Energy' stood out the most. A major takeaway. Indeed, your professor put it brilliantly. Thank you for all these tidbits in your videos. Oh, in regards to the plastic pens, I'd like to share that since last 7 months I've been using ballpoint pens made from cardboard as their body/tube with the only plastic part being the refill containing the ink. Plus, the best bit is that the bottom end of the pen comes with seeds of different plants which can be sown once you discard the pen. Felt like sharing with you. Anyways, sorry for the lengthy comment. My questions are as follows : 1) When/How are you planning to make your book available in India? (It's because the currently available platforms either don't ship to India or the cost is too high) 2) I have seen your posts and read some of your blogs written by some environment-savvy guests. So, I was wondering if you have any thoughts of transforming them into or doing them as podcasts. Do you? Regards from India.

I knew you looked familiar. I study architecture and I was writing a research paper last semester was about waste management and architecture design. Another student had a similar topic, her solution was focused on using the waste as building material itself. With mine, I studied more on how the waste was produced and how to better process them, especially with construction waste, streamlining the process and making it more efficient to give them new life. It's very hard to efficiently reuse/recycle waste at both an individual and systemic level, even the efforts being done now are not very sustainable, the little things like the candles, canvas bags, etc. do very little to help the garbage crisis, and take too much work for whatever benefits they have. The problem is daunting, but I commend people who make the effort, no matter how small. Channels like this are good because it brings the topic to mainstream culture because the real solution will be a broader interdisciplinary solution. There has to be a re-imagining of how to use materials and produce new products to always keep in mind the end. Circular economy is the key word. Waste management systems need innovation and new kinds of jobs have to be made cause people trying to reuse their coke bottles at home almost make no difference. Thanks Bonnie for caring about this topic.

LOVE THIS-- regarding pens. I often use pens as a medium for art and for a basic low cost ballpoint pen I chose to use the Pilot G2 (and others like it) because it has refills. Instead of chucking out the whole pen, you only need to dispose of the ink well. Still using some plastic BUT a much smaller amount. Alternatively, fountain pens, while often a bit pricier, are refillable. To recycle ("recycle") pens, markers and other plastic based writing utensils (even watercolor pallets) , Terracycle has a program where you fill a box with writing implements and they work directly with manufacturers to make sure the material is reused. They generally have a waitlist but it takes a while to collect enough pens anyway. Cheers!
