I'm so glad you talked about the reality of disposable diapers! For my baby I've tried really hard to minimize footprint by using lots of hand me downs, or buying artisanal local products or even DIY articles like the ones you did, but diapers are a headache. It is nice to hear that we need to allow ourselves for space for imperfection! Such a positive and healthy attitude. Congrats on your baby, enjoy this wonderful time!

Love that cardboard bassinet, what a cool idea! And really admire your outlook on balancing your want to use cloth nappies as much as possible with the realistic view that sometimes you may have to be "imperfect" and use a disposable here and there. I used cloth from birth with my first child and while I don't regret it in the slightest, it was certainly a lot of work. Expecting baby 2 soon and have already decided to use mainly cloth, like yourself, but leave room for the moments that we may need to grab a disposable. And that's completely ok! We were gifted an Amish cradle. Ready-made sheets didn’t fit it. I bought one and had to resize it, so I kept looking at it and thinking it would be super easy to make more sheets. Enter an old T-shirt 100% cotton! There was just the right amount of material! Your cardboard box reminded me of my mom’s advice to me to use a dresser drawer.

Hooray! Such an exciting time! Also, cloth diapers are much easier to use than people think! And, if you think it might be hard to do at first, check out a diaper service (they deliver a bunch of diapers with a diaper pail and pick up the used diapers and drop off more clean diapers). We had one for the first few months and it was awesome!! Also, to clean the baby's bum during diaper changes, we filled a thermos with a pop-up spout with warm water each day and used that with the reusable cloth wipes. Also, you will find that you will use the wipes/washcloths for everything all day long--so have a ton of those on hand. Finally, when the baby starts eating food, the poop will be solid. We used biodegradable, flushable liners in our daughter's cloth diapers that you can just take off and flush--poop and liner. That way you don't have to deal with cleaning poopy diapers if you don't want to.

Add plastic window tinting to reduce heat transfer on the windows. It really helps. Also put up plastic over the window frame to prevent the window sweating. But the window tinting really helps.

i was the same as you with the ideals, but i found that half of those ideals are out the window once the babies born, and im someone who lives mostly self sustained, i grow all my own fruits and vegs, we have our own forest on our land, plenty farm animals, solar arrays, we almost never needed to buy anything, but then we had quadruplet daughters, and self sustainability just wasnt possible, its good to have ideals and good to see your willing to be flexible with them if you need to be, its the flexibility in your values that is important, people who cant adjust there plans accordingly always struggle
