It is absolutely amazing how much information we can get from herbarium, I really didn't think about it. Usually, it's seed banks and such that I think are valuable. Thank you for this video!

I love the information and education of your videos on this channel and your other channel. I do wish the camera didn’t move around, in and out, left to right so much. Maybe this is a style of videography as a few other channels I watch shoot this way. But I just want to say it can be hard to watch for some people, myself included. Sometimes I have to quit watching 😢

They do know that Kew Gardens is in the Western Hemisphere, right? Only 17 minutes in but definitely in the West. Just teasing. Excellent video, great collection.

I take it the term “Citizen science” is being rebranding as “community science” to avoid the term citizen, dissolving it. We’re allowed to be citizens of a sovereign nation, it’s not a dirty word. Otherwise, I loved the episode.

Great work in preservation, given that old specimens may still provide extractable DNA. Hope those extinct in the wild will be reintroduced through genome reconstruction akin to Jurassic park. After all, nothing compares to having the plants growing in the wild and not just sitting between the pressed papers. There are many talks about saving endangered animals, but often we forget to look at the plants which sustain them.

As of Feb 2022: Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, UK 8,125,000 Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France 8,000,000 The New York Botanical Garden, USA 7,921,000 Naturalis, Leiden, Netherlands 6,900,000 Missouri Botanical Garden, USA 6,850,000 MNHN, Paris is the oldest, established in 1635. They are digitised and open to access online, it is great fun browsing through them or hunting for particular things. I stumbled on a Stephanotis collected from Madagascar in about 1650 to 1654.

This was one of the most fascinating vids I’ve seen. It reminds (a little) of the Herbariums I did at college. We had to collect one hundred specimens, including identification. Also did a phycology ‘seaweed herbarium’ with identification. That was my favorite. You all do a great job of education. Thank you.

Hi Steff! Love your videos and your energy! Im in northcentral Wisconsin and I think Ive heard if the word Squall (because I knew what it was....) But I dont really hear it used here that often. We just have snow storms. Seems like everything is a snow storm, heavy snow storm, snow storm with high winds, snow storms with drifting.... And now and then blizzard. Lol. It snowed all day yesterday and some schools closed and some ppls workplaces shut down early. Not mine of course. Lol. I got to drive home 30 minutes in the snow. But I think its not that bad for us, to be honest, because thats just normal winter here, so most ppl have cars that handle it well or get tires that can deal with it (I think its harder when it snows where ppl are not used to snow because they just cant be as prepared). Its 5:30 am as I write this and I know when I crawl out of bed, there will be a lot of shoveling in my future. Lol
