Go? or No Go? Diminishing VFR Dilemma

The plan was to skip breakfast and head out to the airport with the intention of flying south about 35 miles to Cottage Grove. There was a Fly-In with a Pancake Breakfast. And I was hungry!
As I drove out to the airport, there were a few low lying clouds in the valley where i would be taking off. By the time I took off from Daniels Field, the clouds had doubled and thickened. I even witnessed a fellow Hurricane pilot disappear into the low clouds, possibly unintentionally. The VFR conditions were certainly diminishing!
I had no way to tell if I could make a safe flight to my destination, and even if i did make it, I could easily end up stranded far from home.
What do I do? I tried to voice all of my thoughts during this flight, for your listening pleasure. I was definitely struggling with tunnel vision, and my hunger pangs were not helping me think logically.

This video gave me the same heby-gebees like old school flying. i.e. the movie "the spirit of st. louis 1957) starring jimmy stewart. Edge of my seat suspence and drama starting @3:13 Thumbs up! (sorry no emoji.)

How about getting a preflight weather briefing? Before you fly.
@glassdogangle
@glassdogangle 6 лет назад
Correct. I always check weather incessantly before every flight in all surrounding areas. Without exception. I don't even think about flying without checking the nearest reports. Problem is, Daniels Field has no weather briefing info. Closest thing was KEUG 13 miles away, and it was showing VFR with 10 mile visibility, overcast at 5,000, all morning for the two hours I was getting ready to head out. Weather briefings are only a tool that can take you only so far. Incidentally, my flight south did take me into the VFR conditions reported at KEUG, and it was in that direction that I was straining to see in the video at 05:00 just before I made my decision to continue on. Also, as I explained in the video I talked about how the surrounding conditions at Daniels were deteriorating rapidly, from just a few thin low clouds as I began my pre-flight to about 80% overcast in a matter of minutes. No weather briefing or TAF in my area was predicting anything like this.

So glad to hear that you're safe as always. Keep up the good flying. I've had my private since 69.

Another nice video. I agree always get a preflight weather briefing if weather looks like it might deteriorate. Good practice interacting with weather anyway. Thanks for making it. I finally found you on sectional for OR. so now I can follow your flights as you make videos. Don't know if you use it but this is a nice site for flight planning skyvector.com/

Yes I always check the weather before flying. My favorite app is AviaWeather (because it's free). And I use skyvector.com all the time for planning and scouting out new places to fly. In the air I use Avare for sectionals and FlyIsFun for navigation. These are the best free flight plannning and navigation apps closest to wingx pro or foreflight, which cost money.

Sir what engine do you use? I'm assuming a 2 stroke. I know you had videos where you had minor issues but it seems like a reliable engine.

Hirth 3202. All the issues have been ironed out. Runs great!

Can you comment as to how you fixed the premature fanbelt wear?
@glassdogangle
@glassdogangle 6 лет назад
I took a dremel and removed a casting burr, and also added a second washer to move the pulley forward a bit more. Problem is fixed.

The Hurricane 103 is not manufactured anymore. So you just have to find one for sale used. They come up for sale now and then.
