Opening of the first episode of the Go With Noakes Mills and Dales series. Sets up the scenario of John and Shep touring around in a restored Morris Minor car. First shown November 1980, this was from a summer daytime repeat in 1983.
Great show - wish it was still available in any format. Nellie the Morris Minor is still around and has been fully restored in her original cream colour. After appearing with John and Shep it was used in an episode of the children’s show ‘Rentaghost’. If you search ‘Rentaghost Super Dobbin’ on here you can see the car in the episode. It’s given magical powers to go very fast…
Hi Martin ...I think John was the best ( and Shep ) . Like Shaun said have you got the rest of the episode as I would like to see John at Harewood Hillclimb as I was there that day but can't get anything until now of this episode ????? Thanks for this bit though.
Well done for recording this, and thank you so much for going to the trouble of uploading it for others to see. I was very young when the show was broadcast, but I remember Minor, especially at the end of the episodes when the titles rolled over a view of her rear. Nice to see her again!
Looking at the early Blue Peter clips -it seems that Noakesy was obliged to speak as posh as possible. Looking back, it is so prententious, stuffy and oh so middle 'clarse'.
Have you heard early Clarckson on top gear, the BBC voice was prevalent. Mind you Clarckson worked the other way, a public school boy pretending to be more 'normal'
True. BUT it kept the standards high. AND it ensured everyone could understand them. Back in those days there was no mass immigration, not to the degree it is now. Less people in the country, less traffic on the road, less litter and so on. The BBC had a reputation to keep up as there were only 3 channels. If you wanted other accents etc they could be found on ITV. I totally understand what your saying though, but that is just how things were back then. Higher standards and you had to get places on merit and be qualified. Look at BBC 1 now and its every accent under the sun, and people like Flintoff or Paddy McGuiness where you cant understand them. Anyone can get to be a presenter and do anything, its good in some ways, but all the English identity has gone, and I have lost count of the times I have heard people complaining that you cant understand people / shows and actors or cant hear them. This is why....Noakes was unique on the BBC back in the 70s and people loved him as he would have a go at anything and was funny. I am in my 50s now and would take the BBC in the 70s over the utter woke crap they make these days as every single show back then used to be quality. Where is the comedy classics like - Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, 2 Ronnies, Porridge, Only Fools and Horses to name a few. They dont make things that good now. Sad, but there you are.....
