Goan Goddxem Recipe : Let's make an old, true-blue, traditional Goan sweet dish. Let me show you a simple Goan dessert, goddxem. This humble Goan dessert - goddxem, is not a glamorous sweet dish requiring expensive ingredients. Perhaps it's because the Goan goddxem recipe is so simple that sadly, it's been forgotten by many. However, goddxem is what Goans have been making as a tea time treat for generations.
By the way, goddxem is not just tasty and nutritious, it's also gluten-free and a great vegan dish too to enjoy for breakfast, with your afternoon tea, or as a dessert after lunch or dinner. In my opinion, this delicious, healthy, home-grown dish is worth preserving, by Goans at least, for future generations. So now, let's see how to make goddshe. A friend described it to me and then I tried to make it and develop a recipe for it. It seems like very few people are even aware of dudhiya goddxem today! Sorry, I started responding to the Goan goddxem video and somehow got diverted into the dudhiya goddxem track!

Thanks for the nutritional recipe of our beloved Goa. I have found this suitable also with moong chilla. Better than moong dal. Please let me know if any other grain can be substituted for chana dal . Also soaked methi seeds, calling it methyachi pez, gives it another flavour and nutritional value.

Louisa, that's another kind oof goddxem called chirgeanchem goddxem or moonga konn. As soon as I have a recipe for that dish, I'll post it.

It's kind of a puran poli filling with rice and coconut milk. Simple and nutritious desert without ghee or oil. I find most deserts from the south or coastal area of India much healthier than north India

Somewhat, brightlotus. But the puranpoli filling has only chana dal and jaggery. In goddshem, the main ingredient is rice. And I absolutely agree with you that desserts from south India and the coastal regions are lower in fat content and healthier. On the other hand, the desserts from north India are sooooo tasty. I can't resist pedas and ras malai.

Lovely recipe, will also try..Ma'am I have few queries; does palm jaggery enhance the taste? Is cane jaggery called as "gur" in North India.

Thank you for the appreciation, Shalini. Palm jaggery adds a hint of a different flavour which is characteristic of palm jaggery. It is less sweet than cane jaggery (sugarcane jaggery), also called gur or gud. Palm jaggery also gives a slightly darker colour to the goddxem. But tastewise, goddxem made entirely with gur is surely not any less tasty. Go ahead and make it with just gur if that's what is locally available. I happened to have some palm jaggery and so I could use it for this video. But mostly, I make it with cane jaggery alone as palm jaggery isn't available in the place where I live.

My mother tongue is marathi. I am trying to get the pronunciation of the name of this dish right.. Could you please write it in devnagri script? Thanks in advance😊

My pleasure, Jyotsna. The word has two syllables 'Godd ' and 'xem". The first syllable is pronounced exactly like the Marathi word for sweet - गोड. But for the second syllable, where the 'm' is silent and not pronounced, there is no equivalent that you could pick from the बाराखडी to depict the right स्वर. The nearest you could get, using the devanagari script would be शें . To give you a better idea, the pronunciation of the 'e' in 'xem' would be like the pronunciation of the 'e' in the word 'exam". Goddxem in Konkani means 'something sweet". I suggest you also try to listen closely to how I pronounce the word in the video. Hope this helps.
