Hi Sofiia. 👋 CAAF2020 graduate here (I worked on Coffin if you're curious). I think it's important to mention that there are 2 Gobelins programs for character animation: CAAF (international classes in english) and CRFA (in french). When I was a student, there was no Bachelor for CAAF (only Master), each program had roughtly 25 places, and both programs would mix during the 2nd year of Master while working on the graduation film. Which means by that time it was easier for an international student to get accepted for the Master program than for a French one since most French Bachelors went straight to Master in CRFA (filling most of the space), while international bachelors had 25 vacant places to fill in CAAF. With the 2022 reform, not only Bachelor got an extra year overall, but it also got included in the CAAF program, making the field more even when applying for a Master. And I believe now both programs also get mixed at the end of Bachelor while working on the VFX and Annecy shorts. Other than that I think you perfectly described the application process for Gobelins (yeah, the motivation video was terrifying if you do the recording alone, thankfully the interview was MUCH more relaxed and casual). In CAAF in perticuliar, there'll be people with different backgrounds (cultural and professional), most (well, pretty much all) will have an imposter syndrome, but they usually will be pretty open and friendly. Good luck Sofiia with your graduation film, and good luck for anyone interested in attending Gobelins. It's a big school but you'll never know until you apply for it. 🙂
Thanks for pointing these things out! Since I only just joined, I didn't know much about how Gobelins worked before so this is very insightful ^^ Good luck to us all, indeed.
@@ThatGrayCartoonPony Oh thank you very much! Then I will have to learn English. By the way, is it possible to get a scholarship in my degree? because for me it is a very high cost
As an animation student, too, congrats on your acceptance into Gobelins !!! I have always admire Gobelins and every time I see people successfully enter this school and share their experience, it motivates me to one day apply to Master Degree too or, at least, have the opportunity to work with graduated students from this school.
Although I do not major in animation, it's so interesting to hear your journey in arts over the years. I hope you will share some of your experiences in Gobelins in the future. Have a great time with your master.
Thank you, how you broke down the process makes the application process feel less enormous, LOL :-) As for video ideas, I would love to see your process of a class project- from start to finish. Small skits with limited animation like this style, of your time in France, and your life could be fun. Also, how you found housing would be helpful!
I would be very happy to hear you talk about the painful burocracy of the French administration system that you have to deal as an international student 😊. I'd love to apply someday to this program and I'd do it as an international student as well. Thank you so much for making this video!!! it's been so helpful and illuminating about the whole process :)
Congratulations!!! I work in software engineering but someday hope to join Gobelin to pursue my passion. Saving this video for that time. Fingers crossed that I make it
A few months ago I saw this video and watched a bit of it not thinking and didn't think too much about it, I was just curious on what Gobelins was. Now I'm planning to apply next year to the school and remembered this video exists. Thank you so much!
Sofiia, Thank you so much for this video. For a long time I thought that Gobelins was a far-off dream that I was not close to reaching, however seeing your story, I realise that it is a possiblitiy. You broke down the application steps so well, and I'm feeling a lot better about it all. 😀
Congrats on getting in! Not aiming for an art school I’m just a lost soul who loves drawing, but this is very motivating! As someone who sees the future as a very scary thing, you’ve motivated me to see the hope and good side of it. Thank you for this video!!
Thank you for sharing! This is so helpful! As an international student who wants to apply for Gobelins, I'm interested in hearing more about the French administration system that international students need to deal with. Looking forward to your next video :D
Thank you so much for such a detailed video covering ALL the important aspects of the application process. It helped me deal with my anxiety about approaching Gobelins. Your video has the quality to put things at ease.
This was very helpful! I tried to apply last year and had no idea how to do it, I emailed them and they are very helpful and told me that it was best for me to apply to the masters. I'm working on my bachelor's final project and will be applying next year and this is a great place to start. Best wishes to you!!
at the moment im an armature artist, really striving to become an animator and a damn good one at that. I dont think i could ever afford these courses and being honest i have a long journey to reach that level. Im a culinary chef at the moment and with life at the moment its delayed me a bit but i do believe in becoming an amazing artist i just never knew where to start. Thanks to this video it gives me a sight on where to go. I dont plan on applying to gobelins or maybe i dont really care, but what i do care about applying those artist standard to myself. I also wanna add how this video guided me. I fucked up art college, too much partying and being lazy so got suspended and never came back, just went to the culinary industry straight through. ive put my ambitions on standby with the idea that ill teach myself just like the ogs. I felt lost and didnt know where to start again, i do wanna go back to school but i dont got the bills atm and when you hit 23 time just feels different faster like you gotta do something. so i just practice and study everything online through pdf books to videos. to videos on how to read those books. I felt like they helped me improved but not the the extent i want. Even after watching those videos on how to become the artist, how to get it good, how to believe in one self, i still felt lost not through ambition but direction. I recently quit my job, i've grown and gain a love of art and its study. I want this. The job was good to me but i just want to tell my stories and jokes, i was always iching to draw and it bothered me constantly that i wasent behind a pen and paper expressing my dumb shit out there. After leaving and dealing with the unlimited free time one can get lose very easily. I manage to build an idea and improve my skill while at it. Now what, i felt so lost and dumb. I started to respond by just doing things i thought would help me reach a goal, get a expensive laptop, a drawing tablet, make a small cartoon, enter art courses and still i felt lost. That until i saw your video, it shows what i gotta do, after all these 250+ videos on a tutorial playlist, it took just this one to get me on track. So you should be happy that you made this video, it goes further than just a gobelins video, its very helpful in its own way, ive never had trouble with people or selling myself but i always had trouble on proving myself through my works in art. I know i have the skill but i always believed i never had the true skills to prove myself that was myself doubt, my work. It also shows in a weird way, human well to me. there are people out there like me and this video is showed me its ok to be in my position that as long as im working for it, theres still hope and achievement. thank you
Aaah just found out about this video yesterday!! Thank you so much, really a hidden gem ✨ I can't wait for your upcoming videos !! It’s so interesting to watch :D
Thank you for this video! I was afraid I was too old for Gobelins since I only learned about it in senior year of high school 😢So my dreams were shattered but maybe just maybe I can go there one day… Your video gave me a bit of hope.
Im still young right now and asian, but if i ever get the chance to move out of my country and apply... i WILL try since 2d animation is my passion ^-^
Thank you so much for making this video! I've been thinking of applying to the masters but as an international student whose country has a very different application process and purpose for arts masters, trying to figure out what to do was very overwhelming.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and breaking down this intricate process. Before watching this, I had absolutely no idea Gobelin offered a Masters program, much less one that was in english! Definitely opens up more future routes of education! I'd love to see a sketchbook tour as well :)
Its 11:00 pm, I am a psychology major, with no way of attending art school however the video was entertaining and I dont know why, I watched until the end with my full attention. 😂
@@loafkey Loafkey, it is quite a bun-ny pun xD and as someone who is starting on his art & animation dream later in life (at 29, yikes) I am so stoked for you and might be living through you vicariously while also competing (in my head😋). Rooting for ya 😁✌🤘
Hello! Thank you so much for this video! Its amazingly well done, also if you have time Can you talk about studying in Lisaa? If you recommend to study there And what did you learn?
Overall, I can not really recommend it. Right when I left a bunch of teachers and the director of the school changed and it’s still very chaotic. The new administration removed a lot of the creative classes and are gonna make the school more about the technical part of animation instead of working together to make a short film.
Heya ! Animation student at Lisaa here ! From what we understood, working together on short films is still obligatory but for the second year and third year only. Last year, the administration was a mess, removing classes etc.. 😅 but there's a new administration (don't know if we're talking about the one lead by Puchol) this year and they changed stuff again (hopefully for the better) !
Thanks for making this! I'm a UCF student applying to their B.A animation program and I know afterwards I want to attempt applying to the masters program at Gobelins. So I'm trying to figure ojt exactly what I want from Gobelins so I can include it in my BA application letter
Thank you so much! This video is very helpful! Its so nice to see more eastern europeans in the animation! Also was wondering if the discord is still open. Tried the link but it doesnt seem to work ;-;
Wow, 11 years sounds like a relatively short amount of time, maybe it's just because here where I'm from, you start at 4 and graduate at around 17-18 before going on to do 2-7 years of college.
Seriously thank you so much for making this video!! I know nobody irl whos considering this so this was a great help :"D personal question though: do you think it's appropriate to put fanworks in the demo reel? (fan animation/ fanart etc) A lil embarrassed to email this question to the actual gobelin pplsdjfhsdjk
No worries haha! Probably best to avoid that I assume. Unless maybe there is some danser that is hard to tell it is that. They really want to see artwork that represents who you are and shows your skill so I think personal or group projects are best :> Good luck!
I’ll go to the open day on Friday! Hope to see you there, I’m a Mexican student living in France for a year and still figuring out in what country study, does you have a recommendation of things to bring? I didn’t thought about the portfolio before!
Will be happy to see you there! I will be presenting the international master students in the morning. If you don’t have a finished portfolio, I would prepare whatever art you have in a simple PowerPoint presentation, showing the range of your work. Or if you really don’t have time just showing the art on your social media or animations individually would be nice. If you have an iPad it would be easier to show.
@@loafkey thank you so much!!, also, sadly something came up and now idk if I will be able to come tomorrow, do you know if there will me another weekend to go?
Thank you for sharing this information! It helps tremendously. Does Gobelins require applicants to take a french speaking test as part of the application process? I thought I saw this in their requirements and wasn't sure if it is no longer relevant.
@@aesthetical_claire4150 The master course is in English. If you are an international student you will get accepted into an international class. But French is VERY helpful in day to day Paris life. Your doctor or social security agent or visa person will most most likely not speak English
Hi loafey! Thank you for such a helpful video! in Minute 11:59 you mentioned showing an ID, what type of ID are they wanting the applicant to show? (passport, driver's license, birth certificate, etc?)
Hi! I have a question - What age did you start attending art schools? Have you went to a normal school before or directly attended art specialized education since five?
I went to a normal elementary school and then with the encouragement from my parents I switched to an art school at 10. Though it took me a while to take improving my art seriously. I am very grateful my parents supported me so early.
Thank you so much for this video! It's been so helpful. I have a question, I'm currently applying for Masters and, apparently, they ask you to upload the demo reel in your tumblr blog. Do I have to upload anything else in there, like a sample of my portfolio? Or is it simply for the motivation video, demo reel and nothing more?
The tumblr blog is just for the demo reel and motivational video, yea. People that are applying for bachelors are the ones that are asked for a portfolio.
Incredible how you finished highschool at 16 and I at 16 will be in 2nd grade heheh. thanks for the video, but I also have a question, does going 5 years to art highschool to an intermedia animation class count to get you straight to the masters?
Congrats! It might be a stupid question, but are there age limitations in the school? I just finished my education this summer, also just turned 22 and I'm not sure if it's too old to try to apply...
Hello ❤️ I have a question if you have time to answer 🙏 Can I use again one animation for the portfolio? I applied last year and unfortunately, I didn't pass, but in last year's portfolio I had one animation I wish to put again in my portfolio. Do you think I can do this or I shouldn't? I would really appreciate your help 🙏
I don’t see why not. There is no rule you can’t put old things as far as I am aware. Just remember that it’s important to show a consistant quality in a portfolio, quality over quantity.
thanks so much i have a question please what does " set-up " mean here 👇 Demo reel (mp4, 2 minutes maximum) of your completed work (personal and/or professional), to enlighten your animator and director skills: animation (2D and 3D), modeling, layout, set-up, textures, camera mapping, compositing, lightning, etc.
Hi! You mention that no matter what you must know a bit of animation. I am planning to apply for my bachelor and I know almost nothing of animation. Is that okay? Should I make an animation for my portfolio?
t’s always better to buy some in in my opinion though I am not sure it is in the requirements. I would check the updated documents on the Gobelins website.
@@monjishroy9236 you can get in even without an animation degree. In the end, it’s about the quality of your portfolio. Though I don’t think you could get in with 0 animation experience. The school had cases of people getting accepted with no degree but 5 years of experience in the animation industry, for example. I would email Gobelins directly if you are not sure. (This is all stuff I learned with the teacher that helped me apply)
Hi , thank you for your lovely video with tips💖 You are amazing! It's giving me motivation and courage to try. I have few additional questions if it is not a problem. 👉👈In current list of what it's needed to apply in the motivational video is written something about talking about detailing your professional project. Do we need to talk about something like that or talking about ourself and our passion is enough ? 😸
professional project just means what your plans are after you finish Gobelins. Like, how will studying at gobelins will help you get the job in the industry you want, for example.
@@loafkey Woah thank you for such fast reply, that's soo sweet 🤗Thanks that's very helpful, my mind sometimes is too literal and I thought that I need to describe some project that I prepared hehe And about 3d, is it needed to show everything modeling, rigging and animation or we can skip one of them?
@@beebee9741 It’s not necessary to show a lot of 3D skill but it’s a big plus. If you prefer one part of it that’s fine. As long as you can put the fact you are familiar with maya or blender and such in the final card. :) A lot of my classmates never touched 3D before school so it’s fine.
❗Hi Sofia, please respond! 🙏 Do you need to have completed a bachelor's degree to be able to apply for a master's degree? Or can I directly apply with the experience I have?
I’ve heard both things, it depends on the person’s case so you should email the school telling what kind of experience you have. For example, you don’t need to show a bachelors degree if you have some years of experience working for h to w animation industry. In the end, your experience will be seen by your portfolio.
Hi. Sorry, I prefer English so you might need to use Google Translate. You need a pretty good level of English to work in a team and with teachers properly. You don't need French in class but it is very helpful to have a basic skill. You need a good basic knowledge of French to live in France comfortably while you study.
The international masters is in English, all teachers speak English but not all are perfectly fluent. Knowing basic French would be very helpful in day-to-day life in Paris like going to the doctor, speaking with social security and such. If you need to email or call any place most likely they will not speak English.
I should have but by the time i found out I am accepted I found it was too late to apply. Will try again next year! Gobelins has a few scholarships mentioned on the website.
Hi sorry for sending you this since it’s late, but I just started doing art now and I’m 19 and I plan to apply to this school in the prepatory year in the near future but I heard about the age limit and I felt very discouraged that I might not even make it at a certain age, so I wanted to ask if it’s still possible to apply if I were to apply at the school in my twenties?
I’ve heard that there is no age limit really. I have classmates in their thirties. But I don’t know if that’s the case for the prepa. The best thing you can do to be sure is email the school.
@@loafkey oh wow I didnt expect you to reply. One more question, even if I don’t make it into the prepa since I’m not highschool age would I be able to apply for bachelor and make my way up into masters?and thank you for answering my question.
Sorry about that! I was sure it was an infinite one D: The way I found this server originally was by googling “Gobelins hopefuls discord server” and there was a link in a Reddit post. Hope it s still there!
When you apply, if you are an international student they will put you if the English one, don’t worry. Unless you are not planning to go into animation in that case I am not sure.
I have two classmates in masters that are 30+ years old so I don’t think that’s true. Before arriving to France my French was 0 but with Duolingo l and being in a French speaking environment It has become decent over 3 years :) You really can’t live comfortably in France without knowing basic French because they will mostly not speak English in places like banks or hospitals.
