It is refreshing to listen to someone who has studied widely, and thought long and deeply. John Lennox is highly intelligent and is not ashamed of it! His book “God’s Undertaker” is a powerful summary of what is known across many scientific disciplines; it is packed full of rigorous science and philosophy. So he is worthy of our respect and attention. Listening honestly and quietly to the whole of this talk may be the best 90 minutes you will ever enjoy.

+DreamRasta Unless you insist (as _most_ Christians certainly do _not_) that Genesis must be literally true, it is perfectly possible to believe both in evolution and in Christianity. In fact, the Book of Genesis contains two contradictory stories of creation, which cannot both be literally true. Christian doctrine since before Augustine of Hippo has been that the Bible contains much truth, but that we need not require it to be true in the literal details of poetic accounts such as Genesis. The Bible indeed states that it was God who created the universe, but I personally turn to science to tell me the details of exactly how it was done. I am more in awe at the idea of God's conceiving of evolution and using it to create the human race than I am at the notion that he was forced to create each species individually.

I think Mr. Lennox is a great Christian apologist of our time. I do recall in my college days while taking a course on the History of Christianity by an esteemed Christian professor of history at the University of Washington. He suggested that contrary to Mr. Lennox's conclusion that Christ would have detested religious wars of any kind, that in certain circumstances they may be inevitable if not necessary. The UW professor said nothing more about it but he seemed to be referring to the Byzantine wars with the Muslims as they moved north into Europe spreading their religion and killing Christians who refused to be converted. Many historians have concluded that had the Byzantine Empire not fought against the Arab encroachments of the ninth and tenth centuries, that Europe would have become a Muslim continent, rather than a Christian one and that it was only the Byzantine army that stopped it. The same may be said of the Moors and their conquest of southern Spain. Granted, Christian passivism did overcome Rome but it hasn't to this day had much influence in the Arab countries and beyond. I noticed that Mr. Lennox cleverly avoids those issues when he says, " They will have to speak for themselves," and for good reason. It opens up a can of worms, the same can that the crusaders couldn't avoid. But I love John Lennox and admire his strength and courage to confront the smartest enemies of Christianity head on. Just like an Irishman would.

But it still has the audacity to claim it has answered the biggest, most complex question in the universe: Does God exist?
@jonesgerard

science cannot answer the why questions. Legitimate science does not concern itself with God. Thats all there is to it.

Listen: Does God exist? Science tells us that a probability of less than 1 chance in 10^150th is basically an impossibility. However, when calculating the probability of all the variables involved in creating a universe coming together where life could exist is 1 chance in 10^450th. Basically, it is impossible by a factor of 10^300th. So, we must conclude that there is a VERY intelligent being, who is responsible for our being here. There are, of course, many other proofs in science of biblical truth and authenticity. But don't take my word for it. Don't be afraid of God, check it for yourself!

Very well said, the fine tuning of the universe is a question that atheism cannot answer without conceding that this essentially impossible probability actually happened. And lets not get into the part of naturalism that defies both science and logic, everything cannot come from nothing. A universe cannot create itself, because this statement is a contradiction, in order to create itself it has to already be in existence and then we have an endless loop. Many atheists think that science disproves God. However it in fact highlights the necessity for there to be a God.

Some people are going to believe whatever they choose to believe despite the evidence or proof to the contrary. We all have the same science, the same knowledge and information available to us, but its our presuppositions which interpret that evidence/information. Dr. Lennox presented the best lesson one can give for the existence of God. If it's not enough at that foundational level, then it will never be enough.

Hello. I am an atheist. I define atheism as suspending any acknowledgement as to the existence of gods until sufficient credible evidence can be presented. My position is that *_I have no good reason to acknowledge the existence of gods._* And here is the evidence I must consider when evaluating the claim by theists and as to why I currently hold to such a position. 1. I personally have never observed a god. 2. I have never encountered a person whom has claimed to have observed a god. 3. I know of no accounts of persons claiming to have observed a god that were willing or able to demonstrate or verify their observation for authenticity, accuracy, or validity. 4. I have never been presented a valid logical argument which also employed sound premises that lead deductively to a conclusion that a god(s) exists. 5. Of the 46 logical syllogisms I have encountered arguing for the existence of a god(s), I have found all to contain multiple fallacious or unsubstantiated premises. 6. I have never observed a phenomenon in which the existence of a god was a necessary antecedent for the known or probable explanation for the causation of that phenomenon. 7. Several proposed (and generally accepted) explanations for observable phenomena that were previously based on the agency of a god(s), have subsequently been replaced with rational, natural explanations, each substantiated with evidence that excluded the agency of a god(s). I have never encountered _vice versa._ 8. I have never experienced the presence of a god through intercession of angels, divine revelation, the miraculous act of divinity, or any occurrence of a supernatural event. 9. Every phenomenon that I have ever observed has *_emerged_* from necessary and sufficient antecedents over time without exception. In other words, I have never observed a phenomenon (entity, process, object, event, process, substance, system, or being) that was created _ex nihilo_ - that is instantaneously came into existence by the solitary volition of a deity. 10. All claims of a supernatural or divine nature that I have encountered have either been refuted to my satisfaction, or do not present as falsifiable. ALL of these facts lead me to the only rational conclusion that concurs with the realities I have been presented - and that is the fact that there is *_no good reason_* for me to acknowledge the existence of a god. I have heard often that atheism is the denial of the Abrahamic god. But denial is the active rejection of a substantiated fact once credible evidence has been presented. Atheism is simply withholding any acknowledgement until sufficient credible evidence is introduced. *_It is natural, rational, and prudent to be skeptical of unsubstatiated claims, especially extraordinary ones._* I welcome any cordial response. Peace.

I am sorry you have never experienced God’s love. Maybe you are looking in the wrong places or perhaps you don’t want God to exist. Man says show me God exists but God says believe and I will show you I exist. God only reveals himself to those who want to know him. Until then it won’t matter what you read, hear or what evidence presented you won’t see or hear the evidence. If you truly want to know the truth about the existence of God then ask Him to reveal Himself. Ask Him to come into your life and ask Him to forgive you for your lack of belief. I can assure you if you are sincere you WILL experience God presence. Until a person is ready God will be silent. Listen to more of Dr Lenox and Frank Turek (I don’t have enough faith to be an atheist) The scripture says man has ears but he will not hear and eyes but he will not see. Either the Universe came from nothing out of nothing or something out of nothing think about it.

The LHC is expected to address some of the most fundamental questions of physics, advancing human understanding of the deepest laws of nature."

I'm not taking anything out of context. I am merely pointing out God's intentions in His own words, which is the heart of the matter. He clearly had a problem with mankind acting in a cohesive and unified way, as one people accomplishing great things (like making a really tall tower). I am merely asking why He would prefer mankind to be a scattered, disorganized and scattered people. Why do you think He would prefer that?

The Christian faith is like a long rope pulled tight. In one direction the rope stretches out behind us, disappearing into the distance past. The rope is anchored in that direction at a point at which the God who created all things, including time, became a human being in our time, lived, suffered, died ans was raised again from the dead. The rope runs straight and true from that distant anchor planted long ago in our history, into the dim future, our future, which we are told is ultimately gathered into God’s eternal present, the “eternal now,” to borrow Paul Tillich’s phrase…. “ is there any meaning to it [our transient and insignificant existence] all?” we ask. Many voices answer, “No”. There is no meaning except perhaps the meaning we wish to assign to life.” But Brunner reminds us,” The Word of God, the Creator of all these suns and races” say, “Yes! You mean something ! You mean something to God!” We have meaning, Brunner says, because we belong to God, who created us and because the God who created us loves what he made. Beyond this life of contingency and transience “ is another life that longs to break forth” on us. “It has broken forth once in Jesus Christ, The Risen Lord, and it will break forth” for us all in the Resurrection. This other life is Eternal life. It is the quality of this eternal life, which has broken in upon our existence in Jesus Christ, that both judges our shattered existence and gives it meaning, that both reveals our human frailties and points beyond our frailties to God’s purpose to make us like Christ. A key feature of reason is meaningful thinking. If our minds are not autonomous thinking agents but something more like a torrent of falling dominoes over which we exercise no real dominion then we cannot trust that our perceptions are ultimately reliable. This is a prime example of logical incoherence and to put it as simply as possible the sentiment is as follows: “I have rationally discovered that there is no such thing as rationality.”

The philosophical presuppositions I make are 1) the universe exists; 2) we can learn something about it, with our mind's capacity to create models of reality; 3) models with predictive capability are more useful than those without. From this has come the scientific method, which coupled with reason/logic, has advanced our understanding (and manipulation of) the natural world significantly, to our benefit. Regarding cause & effect, what is there to show that reality (or universe) has a cause?

The concept of rationality cannot exist in a meaningless and purposeless universe. So whatever millennia of evolution produced it couldn't be called rational. It would simply "be" for better or worse and there would be no transcendental/objective measuring stick to determine if what we imagine our situation to be actually constitutes "rational", but again, the very fact rationality is a human characteristic would make that aspiration meaningless.
