God Hates Gossip 

My testimony: I used to be a terrible gossip. Saying negative things about others made me feel better about myself. I complained--a lot--about other people. I'd spread stories on the flimsy basis of overhearing bits and pieces of a conversation. I didn't know (or care) if what I was saying was true because it was such juicy gossip. My stories made people laugh, and I loved the attention. Then about 5 years ago I either heard a teaching or read an article--I don't remember what--that gave me a twinge about my sinful behavior. But I still couldn't pray about it, repent, and change my behavior. God didn't give up on me, though, and I began to feel uneasy when I was gossiping. Then came the day when, right in the middle of sharing a story about my oh-so-annoying coworker with my gossip buddy, I stopped and said, "You know, I shouldn't be saying this. If you'd ever meet [annoying coworker] you'd be negatively prejudiced against her because of my words." I began to notice that when I'd start to gossip, it was like God would put a block on my lips to keep the words from coming out. Many times I'd start then abruptly stop a gossipy story, and I'd tell the other person why I couldn't continue. I realized how unloving gossip is, and I wanted to be obedient to Jesus' command to love one another. I rarely gossip now, and when I do I am so consumed with guilt and sadness that I immediately cry out to God in forgiveness and, if necessary, apologize to the person. But this isn't just about no longer gossiping. My relationships have improved. After all, how could a friend trust me if I talk about others to her? How could anyone confide in me or come to me for advice or comfort if they thought I'd tell others what they told me? Believe me, it hasn't been easy rebuilding my reputation. I sometimes see the hesitation in a friend's eyes, holding back because of their lack of trust in my ability to keep what they share with me in confidence. The other thing is that because I'm not looking for things to gossip about, people don't annoy me as much...and if they do, I call them "grace growers" because they are giving me an opportunity to show to them the grace God shows to me. Just this past Sunday I had a friend comment on how she's observed a huge change in me over the past few years because I do a lot more listening than talking...and that she wishes she could be more like me. Now this is a woman I've known for 40-plus years, and I've admired her and always wished I could be more like her. So it was very humbling to hear her say she wishes she could be like me. But it also tells me the transformation God has brought about in my life is evident and bearing fruit.

Gossip is the sin I struggle with the most. I always feel disgusting after I do it, but yet it’s so hard not to. I pray I can be sanctified in this..

I never knew gossiping was sin, I always wondered why I disliked hearing people gossip about others. I have always been the type to speak face to face with someone, and not behind their back.

I left my old church for gossiping about me having a an innapropriate relationship with my uncle. I was just conversating with them about me and my uncle, yet they got it twisted in their minds and told the pastor that were having an incest affair. The pastor was in my office and reviled me as a mental patient and claimed i need psychological help. During the pandemic i thought and thought and finally got through with this through the Holy Spirit and im guessing a few weeks later, i left. I was "church homeless" for a while, but i suddenly went to a brand new church that doesnt tolerate gossip

Isaiah 53 changed my life I cried for 2 years couldn't speak

Great sermon. Gossip is one of the sins that the church does not often deal with. Gossip has a tendency to be swept aside to concentrate on "bigger" sins; however, it is a cancer that grows in a congregation and by the time it is recognized, there is so much damage, it is very difficult to recover.

My mother is a rabid gossiper and refuses to stop continuing to destroy relationships between family members and, when caught, lies about it. I have stopped talking to her as she is toxic with her sinful gossip and I do not want to be infected in her sin. She claims to be a Christian but her heart is filled with envy and malicious. She enjoys that my sister and brother hate me by her slander. She refuses to repent even when rebuked with the holy scriptures

I teach the Bible and hold Bible studies I was also set free from drugs and alcohol. God has done so many wonders for me and yet I have fallen into this. I began to gossip about a coworker and fellow believer. I gossiped with clients about this coworker as well. I can't believe that I became jealous of her and didn't want others to like her. I am confessing now that I have done this. I repent of this terrible sin of jealousy, envy and gossip. I confess to you all brothers and sisters. Please forgive me Lord Jesus and help me to change

A family member of mine has gossiped about me for eight years. It is incredibly painful and it still is because they continue to do it. The worst part is this person helps my husband at our home business and I have to see him everyday. Most people look up to this person as he is a missionary worker and a retired pastor. I ask God to help me forgive him and in truth the pain is so deep that sometimes I just feel so angry.

I struggle with this and tend to bad mouth those I cannot stand...God, please forgive me and my foul mouth ...

This preaching is for me honestly, i strongly struggle with gossip and am a charismatic Christian. I confess my sins and repent and I will change in Jesus name. God bless you man of God

Gossip is something i was actually able to overcome a while back. It took admitting that i was doin it and admitting i was wrong. Just try to remember that burning feeling in your stomach when someone might be spreading gossip about you.. if you feel like you're about to give in to any gossip..

Wow, thank you for sharing. I have been convicted about gossiping for the past 2 weeks. All material I have read over gossiping has been pretty basic- don't do it, it's wrong. But this is the most thorough sermon I have heard on it and it really dives into why gossiping is wrong and has really cleared up any confusion I have had. It was Biblical, Christ-exalting and has really put fear in me (good fear) and brought great encouragement. Thank you.

Hello everyone, I can really identify with the sister. Although I am getting better. I used to gossip a lots. I find myself in a lot of troubles because of that. One things I know about gossipers is that their lives are empty. No one achieves anything by talking about others. He makes no sense.I tell you something anyone willing to listen to gossips is willing spread it. I will continue to pray daily to be set free from listening and taking part in Gossips. Jesus had set me free before and he will do it again.

I liked how you said “it must be on the basis of 2-3 INDEPENDENT witnesses, I don’t believe if someone testifies against another and another person from the same group or family testifies against that same person it counts as a second witness. They’re within the same influence so it should not validate slander.

I quit my job. My boyfriend is a lay elder at his church and someone recently made a sexual slur about me in front of me at the place I work at. I felt so sick about it and disgusted. We both aren’t having sex until marriage. I’m pretty livid about it still especially when I’m trying to turn away from other sins and fighting to stay celibate. I feel as though this lady was not only disrespecting God but disrespecting me and my boyfriend and they are more important to me then a $15 hr job. I also couldn’t deal with the constant gossip and was sin in anger. Now that I’m away from that toxic work environment I’m more calm. I still need to be careful about what I say at church and pray that God will turn me into a true Emotionally mature Christian. Please pray for me and my boyfriend. I’m currently looking for a job where I can serve God the hospitality industry is no longer for me unless I’m serving God nothing else matters.

Up until 27:41 I was with you. You then begin to question what will God do if we try to destroy His temple [our bodies] with things such as the sin of gossip? At this point you separated God from the human being in which he "dwells" and made Him something to fear. We are God experiences manifested as bodies. We are the I AM. It was also explain to me the kingdom of God and the kingdom of heaven it's referred to separately in the Bible the King James Bible that it is two different places. How do we differentiate between gossip, slander and calling out false teachers? It seems Jesus just did it out in the open. Because from my experience the number 1 thing false teachers counter with is "your sowing discord among the brothern"

What do you do if the one gossiping got 2-3 people to lie with them (whether they knew it or were incited and convinced to complain based on the gossip) and none of it is true? How do you deal with that and secret leadership meetings without you knowing or being able to speak a word about it until you are confronted/ disciplined for something you havent done?

What is the line between gossip and news? When does telling someone about an experience I've had with someone become gossip rather than a warning or just a fun story? If you speak about a man whom you believe to be an unrepentant pedophile who is advertising his babysitting services, do we not have a duty to spread it, and if so, how is this not gossip? I need help here, guys. EDIT: And I'd like to preemptively address the notion that "if you're not part of the problem or part of the solution, then it's gossip." How can you know who all might be part of the problem without being omniscient? And my ability to self-justify is astounding, and I can always reason that I'm part of the solution in some way. I need a harder, clearer line on this.

Loved the sermon and was biblically accurate but why did you say "our religion" in this topic of gossip. How is Christianity a religion? In wondering why some Christians say that. I can explain why it's not, this is a common argument within the church too. I'm seeing a lot of popular preachers say religion and it's been explained too why it's not so why do some preachers view it as a religion?

I would like Jeff or other people's honest thoughts on tattoos here. Bible clearly is against getting tattoos, and I know Jeff had some on his arms before he got saved. Now that he has been a pastor for nearly a decade, he has been getting more tattoos, including the one on his left forearm, which must be within the last month?
