I also just appreciate dubs that actually dub the songs. It's extremely weird when there's a language shift for a song. Obviously for some series it just doesn't work, or just flat out isn't wanted by the original company, but if the character is singing, not just soe insert song over a scene or montage, it's nice to be consistent.
I don't think some people realize this is the actual English Dub, not just a fan singing the English lyrics.... Even still, it was done great and while the words sound kinda awkward with the rythm at times, it's a really good job.
@@jamesritzer3531 well... sorry to say, but its been 10 years since the english dub came out (or more i think). so if its not out now, then i dont think it ever will be...
Fun fact: The director of the dub decided to dub the songs because he heard another voice actress do an english cover of these songs! the voice actress's name is Cristina Vee, and she's been in well over a 100 roles, including Mio in K-ON, Darkness in Konosuba, and Homura in Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
I agree with your statement. While I do prefer the Japanese version this is a great dub version of it. And what makes it better is that the voice actor sang it as well. That is a very nice bonus. It is quite rare to see this in animes. Especially when the dub works.
The dub on this walks a fine line between meaning and lip sync. It's quite impressive really! Hats off to the crew! (I'll agree the Japanese version is better, even with my meager understanding)
eh i prefer this dub of the song, also prefer the english dub of the show gotta love the voice talent in it :3 well.... mikuru and haruhi left some to be desired, but it was generally a good dub. LOVE disappearance's english dub
"Even though my heavy heart is parched with pain, I know somehow your sorrow is something I won't see." "God knows that I will follow if that is what you wanted. Take me into all your darkest shadows and you'll see that I am even stronger than you would know." "The way you're standing there, I feel as though we're almost one again, and yet, we're miles apart in time. Beneath the pale blue moon, I see your eyes are glistening with so much loathe. It's tearing you apart to be here. You know it." Haruhi sings to a whole audience but is relaying a message to Kyon in particular. One of the great things about this anime.
Joe Devaney "Even though my heavy heart is parched with pain, I know somehow your sorrow something I won't see." Haruhi's pain is that of not ever getting to experience joys of youth or the universe's phenomena. Kyon's assigned obligation is to help time travelers, espers, and aliens keep a stressed out god in a schoolgirl's form from every destroying the universe. On top of that, Kyon's strides to keep the universe intact can never be known to Haruhi herself. Haruhi probably noticed that stress consistently between the days that they first met and that cultural festival, but she will never know why perhaps because Kyon actively hides the cause of it. "God knows ... you would know." Despite all the contentious chemistry between them, Haruhi sees Kyon as the only person who can ever approach her as a human being. Since Kyon seems to provide Haruhi that emotional support, Haruhi wants to reciprocate. "The way you're standing there ...You know it." Like I said earlier, Kyon's stress from alleviating Haruhi's has left Haruhi with the impression that while Kyon is there for her, she also thinks that Kyon might one day vanish out of bitterness from the burden that she recently understood that he put himself under. (Remember that the cultural festival does take place after the movie making in Sigh.) Recalling "Kyon might vanish out of bitterness," you can also see this as a foreshadowing of the movie. Disappearance (the light novel) released two years before the anime even started.
I just appreciate that actually dubbed the song. Lots of dubs these days don't dub songs as well and while I understand(it takes time money and people complain it's not good enough) I appreciate it because it makes the show feels complete and immerses you into the show
stop arguing on "oh, the original is better" or "dubs aren't that good" bla bla bla. both versions are super cool and they're almost like two different songs. you can be thankful for having a version of the song that's more easily to sing-along to. ok? :)

I adore the English version and it what I normally sing even when I’m listening to the Japanese ver but I never understood why anyone hates the English dubbed version like it was the literal voice actress singing and that’s just- you never see that in anime especially with English dubs heck English dubs rarely to never dub songs and when they have it’s all been for older anime’s (even though TMOH is old now but you get the point). . So instead of saying that it’s not as good or that the Japanese ver is better let’s all appreciate how talented the voice actress is
voice actress is good, but English language itself is bad, it totally different to Japanese, the way its pronounce, how the translator make it from Japanese to English, even the different culture, how Japanese girl act and how western girl act, you can't imagine how cringe of western girl while they do the same weird thing which Japanese girl (or asia girl) do. Take more advanced, you often see the image of western girl is strong and bravery while Japanese girl is most of adorable and shy, and the define of "cute" word between western and asia totally different, too. And that thing affect to English voice actress while they trying to be "cute" like Japanese girl but peopl don't see any cute like Japanese girl but cringe. Problem is language and culture, even same country, similar culture like Chinese or Korea but they also hard to perform as good as Japanese
Hi, after all these years, what can you say about the Russian localization of this scene? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G6NaVH-_wPM.html
I don't know why anyone would hate this version, I love it more that they took the time to even translate it, most animes don't. Its really good all in all
As of right now, it has 12k likes and 721 dislikes. RU-vid doesn't show the dislikes anymore, unless you use an extension (Return youtube dislike, show youtube dislikes, etc.) or a third party RU-vid app (which I am using).
I kinda like the english version better.I think the voice actess is doing a great job and somehow the english version sounds more powerfull than the japanese version to me......But maybe that's just because i can understand what she sings...
yeah due me too , she sings the meaning of it , they wont seing each four of them never anymore in the school , it is time to goodbye , its a last day of them to see , and never will be anymore , and haruhi suzumiya thingking that she being bless to god why kyon and her ( haruhi suzumiya ) was being together forever closer ,
It's empowered and gives that powerful affect because it is in your native language. Even though I'm an English speaker only I can acknowledge it is off tune sometimes, it's just not as good as the Japanese version overall but it is very very good.
uhg every time I look at nagato I want to cry cuz she's been through so much shit for hundreds of years and she just rolles with it and after reading the first 6 books I love hr even more and its so sad because she finally starts having a tiny bit of affection for kyon but we all know haruhis gonna be with kyon in the end so nagatos gonna never be happy
Sparky Dood which part? Her kinda liking kyon? cause I think it basicly confirmed she had small feelings for him when in the snowy mountain arc she saw a vision of him coming into her room like haruhi and mikuru did. And in the disappearance of haruhi she gives him the power to correct the world to what he feels is right, meaning she realy trusts him. Like she could have given it to koizumi or mikuru but she chose kyon
This my song for those people I have helped in my life yet just betrayed me. All things must come to an end. Just like this song. I am moving on and never looking back.
I feel it's worth noting that in the manga, her singing is described as "slightly off key" by kyon, so the English version is closer to the source material there than the Japanese, considering Japanese depicts everyone's singing voice as idols when they sing lol
the lyrics aren't bad but the vocals are out of tune sometimes. I think it might have been done purposefully though, to create a high school band feeling. Prefer the japanese version though.
Luke Liu your right it is more realistic(compared to the Japanese version) in the sense that it does take place as a high school band and not a professional music band
This was more back when voice actors for English dubbed anime were shit. Localization studios are slowly realizing they need to hire talented voice actors but its a slow turn around.
In the book kyon commented that while haruhi was realy good at singing, it wasent perfect, and felt "off" somehow. Then when haruhi said she didn't write song and you could hear the original version if the students bought the school bands original version, the student body felt a wave of relief because "that's what was wrong". She wasent meant to sing it, someone else was, that's why it sounded a little off.
after hearing this song I must say this is the first time hearing english dub song in fact I think it awesome also jp I don't understand why people fighting for this between dub vs sub it's awesome to listen this wendee lee and aya hirano did great job for this although I am Arabia we don't mind listen to this dub and sub it's awesome to hear it XXXD
+Pooks "in" Boots Right? And I love the imperfections in her voice during the performance. All the cracks and the "poor mixing" make it more raw and believable as a live performance
I remember when some HS girls did this at a local talent show costume and all. Man good times I wish someone had recorded it. The girl in the bunny suit could really sing.
Is it just me or does she keep glancing to her right while singing because she's directing her feelings in this song towards him and she wants him to see that?
as the esper said.. he didn't want to make a move on her, as it'd just confuse her and she already set her sights on kyon (i wonder if it's because of his John Smith routine)
7F0X7 As my colleague LegendaryTeemo has said, yes she's looking at the sheet music. Haruhi was unaware of Kyon's presence in the Lecture Hall and thus was not casting her gaze at him. However I'm not denying that she may have feelings for Kyon as that issue has been addressed before, see The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Six and various other occurrences when Kyon was looking at Mikuru and Haruhi stopped it. I'm simply pointing this all out to look thought provoking and I hate answers with no explanation... Like my colleague's answer before...
When I was in 8th grade, I mustered up the courage to ask a girl out. I thought I had done everything right, I even got her a flower, but when I ask, she just said "No" right back at me. I felt pretty devistated, so I turned to RU-vid to try to chear myself up. That's when I found that someone had upload all episodes of the English dub of Haruhi S1 in 3 parts per episode. It was my first time watching a full anime. I remember while watching it during one of the parts, I thought to myself, "Who needs a girlfriend when you have anime?" From that moment, I knew I would become a weeb...
Keeping in mind they had to match the mouth sync, make it sound like the original, have similar lyrics to the Japnese version AND have it make sense in English, that was very well done. ^_^
It is hard to do a dub of a song because in addition to retaining the meaning of the song and keeping with the rhythm, the voice actress has to be able to sing. The English version sounds great despite all of the challenges. This earns my respect, admiration, and thanks.
I like this version much better, it seems more raw and powerful than the Japanese version, however some argue that the Japanese version seemingly has more emotion to it. Japanese music is usually a form of sung poetry, with no doubt has emotion, but if you do not speak Japanese, the max you get out of it is pure emotion, the rest is imagination. If it is in a language you understand however, you can relate the meaning of the words to the emotion of the song itself, so basically a more refined version, or "Whole". It is a wonderful song nonetheless and both versions carry a message, though at times we do not know what it means.
i wish more dubs nowadays would also dub singing, or even just the opening to animes. i know it would probably take extra money and effort, but it’d be cool, especially since there are a few voice actors who got their start posting their covers of anime and/or vocaloid songs on youtube
(this is me begging for a bocchi the rock dub where they dub over kita’s singing) (i know im literally the only person who wants this but i dont know i think it’d be fun)
Watched the sub and didn't watch that many clips of the dub. I just thought 1 day like 'how was this scene done in the dub?' and here I am. Nice. Nice.
Listen carefully to the lyrics, then considered exactly who and what Haruhi Suzumiya is. It's a love confession and it could also be a threat of what could happen if things don't work out right
I watched Haruhi Suzuimiya in Japanese originally and I always thought the English version of God Knows was just a cover. Never knew that was actually Wendee Lee singing, damn!
It has been so long since i first watched this anime and this song brings back so many memories of the show, such nostalgia. I wish they could've continued this anime.
This version isn't bad,it's just the japanese is better. Hell, this is actually great for dub. It's just Aya Hirano's performance is better than wendee lee's as she's much more eccentric. She's also better at the musical performance. Some parts of this fit nicely, such as the chorus. Others are rushed such as "If i had my way", which IMO should've been stretched a bit. Despite this, still a brilliant performance. 7/10
Wendee Lee was one of the first Dubbers I recognized early on as I became a fan of Anime in general. I loved her as Maya Natsume in Tenjho Tenge and was happy to hear her as Haruhi. I'm Glad she doesn't seem to be as mixed up in the BS going on today with English VA's.
happy face ._. well, um. i saw it on anime in real life by Nigahiga and i saw one of em had a blue shirt similar to the point u were showing, idk if im right :(

I don't like her lyrics as much, I fell in love with this versions lyrics and when I listened to her version I was so sad that she took out my favorite part..
