The waiting is killing me inside. Just thinking about playing this game is giving me chills. And the best part about this is that the game is already been reviewed and everyone has the same opinion: Its a masterpiece in terms of gameplay and story.
I’m my opinion. I dislike that they took the skill tree for unarmed combat. Loved being able to mix up combos using melee and being able to hit L2 + R1 or R2 to recall your axe with an attack. Not a game changer but missed how diverse the combat was. Seems they want you to really use your axe and blades mainly this time around.
That arrow around Atreus' neck isn't jade, it's mistletoe. It's what broke Freya's invincibility spell that was cast on Baldur, which then made him vulnerable to all attacks. Which is also what lead to Baldur's death, Freya's hatred for Kratos, and the beginning of Fimble Winter, the precursor to Ragnarok.
So the tree thing....I've seen many games where something as simple as moving trees suck up a lot of resources. It may be as simple as them wanted to optimize their resources on other items such as the prints left in the snow instead. Now that it's winter, you don't need all of those leaves moving so they decided to redo the trees. Same with the explosions. Just my 2 cents.
The graphics of this game are good, but the rest of the game may not be detailed, Rockstar Games released a RDR 2 game in 2018 which had different physics of Hairs & Beard.
I'll get back to it when big games decide to stop releasing directly on top of one-another. Still need to wrap up coverage for God of War and Call of Duty. Then I'll get back to the batman video. I do this all solo so bare with me.
Now that I'm playing it, I really feel like they didn't put that much efford in the gameplay part. I feel like we got a beta version of the gameplay instead of the final one.
Also dislike that they took the skill tree for unarmed combat. Loved being able to mix up combos using melee and being able to hit L2 + R1 or R2 to recall your axe with an attack. Kinda disappointed with the lack of technical upgrades from the last game, but the new story is enough for me to buy it and play through another masterpiece
I was going to say… the last game I thought was quite impressive on my PS4. This game, while I enjoy it, is nowhere close to as visually stunning as many other games I’ve played on my PS5. Lots of games from 2020 I think looked better.
It’s good, I’d buy it again, I’ve just come to expect PlayStation exclusives to push the graphical boundaries like they do with most of their AAA titles.
@@thomasharris9059 I wonder if releasing on PS4 has anything to do with it (though I don't know what games you're comparing to). I think once we ditch supporting old gen we'll see developers go all-in on what current gen can provide. Although they do offer two version at different prices...
@@AnAncient76 Uhm… no. Developers find better and better ways to optimize console hardware as time goes on. That’s why GTA V was released on the PS3 and blew peoples minds with what it was able to accomplish with render distance and scaling. By the same token RDR2 came out at the end of the PS4 development cycle and still goes toe to toe with anything yet made on PS5. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
Im trying platinum Ragnarok right now, I've beaten it before but never actually platinumed it. Same with gow 2018, i need to go back & platinum that one also
My problem with Ragnarock is that it's literally the same game over again. Same locations filled with the exact same creatures spawning from the exact same places while solvilng the same puzzles. They changed the main god bosses some and went from a warm tone to a cool tone and called it good... I don't care if they added a few new areas. To me this is not worth playing if you already played the first game.
Watching this vid to see the changes. But other than that i'm refraining from watching anything else. Since i want to wait for it to come out on PC. Sadly don't have a Playstation. So going to try and avoid spoilers for now.
2018's sounds are slightly better than Ragnarok (at least when I listen to the comparison on Sony WH-1000XM5) ... On regular speakers, the differences isn't as clear.
God of War 2018 used checkerboard rendering and was a PS4 title with a frame rate cap removal patch. God of War Ragnarök has no checkerboard rendering whatsoever, the resolutions and frame rates are below: PS4: 1080p@30fps PS4 PRO: Performance: 1080-1656p@40-50fps Fidelity: 1440-1656p@30fps PS5: Performance: 1440-2160@60fps (average 1852p) Performance+: 1440p@80-90fps Fidelity: 2160p@30fps Fidelity+: 1852-2160p@40fps The Performance+ and Fidelity+ modes require a 120hz screen, the Fidelity+ mode can be unlocked with VRR.
@@johannessguten2527 They do in this one, the performance+ mode is just an unlocked frame rate. You can unlock the Fidelity+ mode with VRR. Would there be more performance on the table in a version build from the ground up for PS5? Probably. But we do have a native PS5 version that runs on a PS5 SDK and has improved visual settings.
The scary thing is that God of War 4 (2018)'s graphics were already God-tyr! But somehow Santa Monica Studio made Ragnarök to look even better! It's going to be absolutely Crazy & Epic! GOTY! 🔥❄⚡🐐
@@Geenoi True I won't lie. But like I said with what they've done in gowr it seems realism was always the goal. But I will say GoWR has its own artstyle too just far more grittier.
I've played GoW 2018 15 times start to finish. I just finished my first run of ng+ on ragnarok and tbh it was a drag. I just don't like it as much. The changes with the armor/enchantments was a negative. The combat is worse. Story is worse. Pretty disappointing for me.
I must be the only person who loves the old gow games more then the new ones. Gow2018: Gameplay just too slow , first hours were bring AF, bit too many RPG elements for me (armor upgrades , weapon upgrades ect...) to many puzzles and oh i just hate that annoying boy! Otherwise still a good game 👍 Just my opinion.
God of war Ragna is an overall better game. Better combat, better weapons, better bosses. But i still prefer 2018, 2018 is more of a repetitive game, not ragnarok. Why? Because of that atreus missions. Having a mission select feature would’ve make it perfect.
But to me GoW 2018 was boring, didn't have enough voicelines etc (but I still loved and played the game) while in Ragnarok (which I haven't played yet but I watched and loved) it looks beautiful, fun, and challenging and the gameplay doesn't look bad or boring at all, I feel like you ppl are just complaining
@@Nick930 nice. no drawbacks to use Favor Quality + HFR + VRR then. Which is weird since how will the game decide what resolution from 1800p-2160p range to use if framerate is unlocked as much as it can go ?
@@HiCZoK they like insomniac have an algorithm where it only kicks in dynamic res if it would drop under a certain target (likely 38fps or so) at that res it’s not used to get higher frames so say a ps5 has the gpu grunt to run a scene at native 4k 41fps it would become 1800p to try and get closer to 60 it will stay at that native 4k 41fps
@@WeAreGhuraba or one may say we have reached a plateau in graphics department and it will take sometime or maybe next gen till we see significant leap like those unreal demos
@@lipiningole1381 Physics is one, waiting for the day when games will have no pop ins that break immersion but instead have a world that transitions seamlessly. More frames and better seamless world is what I want right now more than graphics. Nothing's worse then walking down a road to see lil things like trees start popping in out of nowhere.
It is for me too. I just wish it was Cory Barlog behind the wheel again. This game felt way more grounded in terms of the characters. And I do wish the characters had better accents to go with the Norse setting. This game should have a sequel and Ragnarok should have been the next game. I still very much enjoy it though. It’s better than 2018 in some ways but not all.
Graphically speaking GOW Ragnarok is a FAIL, this IS NOT A PROPER PS5 game. Make no mistake this is a game made with PS4 compatibility first rather than make it a PS5 statement.
I mean, yes it’s made with PS4 compatibility in mind, as the vast majority of PS players have yet to land a PS5, and that may have held back this games graphical potential.. slightly. But to call this a graphical “fail”? Are you kidding me? Even being held back with last gen compatibility, this is probably one of the best looking games to ever release (emphasis on ONE of). Here’s the facts tho, GOW2018 was already about as real as games can look (aside from UE5). Had Ragnarok fully utilized the PS5’s power? Maybe some Ray tracing. Even without that, the texture work, animations, and lighting are all as good as it can really get at the moment. Ragnarok is undeniably a technical achievement, considering how well this behemoth of a game runs on last gen. Calling this game a graphical fail is utterly incorrect and comical.
My problem with ragnarok was kratos become slightly weak than previous game. The armor also too colorful, especily the ng+. The previous one had best design like lava muspelheim glowing in dark place
Dont you feel like kratos is thinner now ? I mean, in gow 2018 he felt heavier and bigger… now he doesnt… I don’t know how to explain it … but it feels weird And if you compare sound !!! Kratos its so quiet, I mean his steps, his gears … what happened ? Sound its really important in games … in ragnarok I feel like kratos was downgraded
To be honest, i prefer the HUD & MENU from GoW 2018.. in Ragnarök, the fonts are way to big in my opinion & that still on smallest Settings..(i play on 27" Gaming Monitor) In 2018 it was more smooth & clear. also the effects from HUD was more ..lively with those smoke effects on it. Just a small thing & i love the game so far.
GOW Ragnarok is phenomenal, but it was designed for the PS4, and slightly enhanced for PS5. Now they need to make a true next-gen GOW designed exclusively for the PS5. Need more more games like Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, that is truly built for next-gen and take advantage of all the PS5 advanced specs.
I grew up on consoles that barely managed to push 15fps at times. 30fps locked is perfectly fine for this game, and with VRR enabled on my OLED, it plays even smoother and looks great
@@Nick930 Same. I've always disagreed with people that say once you got to 60 from 303 or 144 from 60 you can never go back. I've never understood people who mean that seriously. I'm happy 4k 30 fps is even achievable.
Games like this are great at a cinematic, lay back 30fps with controller, pizza, beer, etc. 40 is perfect. And the slight input delay you'd feel makes the character feel heavy weight. On other games it hides clunky animations or allows non-super-mushy textures. I'm always coming back from 144hz/fps to 30-40fps with no issues for non-fps games. Don't know what's this obsession with high fps everywhere, some story driven games really feel like watching a movie at 60fps.
@@levipeterken4020 You disagreed with them because you dont understand them because you never expirience what they’re expirience those people who said that are mostly pc gamers who used to play 60 fps to 120 fps even more and unlock frame rate for the past decade now.Console players like you would never understand the difference between 30 or 60 after i got my ps5 since 2020 i don’t remember the last time i played a game at 30 fps all my games are in performance mode 60 fps.If you have a nextgen hardware or console why would you choose to play 30 fps when you have 60 fps available to you a much more fluid expirience?Unless you still play on the last gen system or Nintendo Switch
Finished both, 2nd one is not worth 60bucks 1st one is better but both are great games if I would have known better I would have waited for a price drop..
@@Mvp8243 If Ragnarok really was a ps5 exclusive, barely any people would've been able to play it, and secondly, it would've been a massive failure for Santa Monica. Why? Sales
@@astralchaos3441 obviously sales however ratchet & clank sold 1 million copies a month after release & that's ps5 exclusive. Anyway I made the comment cause god of war is 4 years old not that much of a leap graphically how it should. Ragnarok is graphically the same game
@@mauro6545 I agree - they should cancel the PS5 since it can't compete with the PS4 sales. As a gamer myself, corporate sales figures will always matter to me more than massive technological leaps and experiencing new things
I love your videos man, have been anticipating for this one in a long time. Thank you. I'll watch it when I'm back home from work! Also Nick, I have a recommendation, if you could do Gotham Knights ps5 vs pc?? I know there are a bunch of videos out there already, but I love your analysis, which is why I'm requesting.
This game is really good, but people are overlooking some serious flaws this time around.. The dialogue is substandard compared to the first. There's the obligatory black female who's better that the protagonist at everything she does (woke). Everyone fealt more like regular gods than mortals. The level where you are spending your entire time having what sounds like a lover's quarrel with Freya the entire way through, is so incredibly cringe worthy. Nothing in terms of innovation for the gameplay or music has been added since the previous game. The gameplay is great, but people are looking over some major flaws because of the hype
So bummed that i don't have a PS with me to enjoy this masterpiece and i really hope that this comes out to PC as well later next year. Great Video BTW, waiting to watch your review video.
Especially the lighting. I think Nick kind of overlooked it, there is way better baked global illumination and it looks way more realistic how light is portrayed.
Am I the only one here who prefers the 2018 color and graphics especially gameplay. When I first played ragnorok It was so Jarring from the different mechanics and combat idk 100 hours in now something about new one still feels cheap maybe???😅
That's 1 thing I don't get I understand atmosphere But with our tech you'd think not every creators go to pallete would be drab and dreary But it usually is Just straight greyscale or some mute brown and green with a splash of crimson 😂
@LET'S GO CHAMP! LET'S GO CHAMP! LET'S GO CHAMP! Oh boy. After playing the game I agree, it was the biggest disappointed I ever had with a game, played for 18 hours and got a refund, couldn't even finish it.
i can only imagine what santa monica could have done on a next gen exclusive experience. ive seen some ps4 gameplay and it looks pretty damn incredible.
Disappointment 😞..Same game just a little bit different characters. Not new , just different. Miss the old times where games where actually different from the last one. Now they ask 80 euro for the same game with another scenario and some moves that they didn't choose for the last one and just added them to ragnarok.
Important note: 60fps is mostly 1800p with TAAU to reach 4k. This makes the 3k image look virtually identical to the 4k one and at double the framerate
Gross don't let streamers ruin the story/gameplay experience for you. Pick up a PS5 or wait for the PC version. Plenty of other games to play if you have to wait, and it's worth it.
So, 4 years between the two games and the switch to Playstation 5. So why does Ragnarök looks pretty much the same. I don't expect a quantum leap in graphics but at least a significant, noticeable step forward. Really disappointing!
Yeah GOW 2018 was just better and I knew it because the story there is just better in every way along with the pacing and all the others even the characters like Baldur really made a difference
Not hating but tbh I see this as DLC. It's good DLC, but it's DLC nonetheless that was just branded with enough changes to showcase it to the masses as a new title. It's like getting the iPhone 12 pro and the 13pro back to back. Not much changed tbh but it's okay at best. 8/10 game just cause of how redundant they made it to buy a nother copy of the same game.
everyone who types this retarded shit literally knows nothing about games lmfao. I guess halo 3 was dlc for halo 2. God of war 1-3 is dlc trilogy. Gears of war 1-3 is a dlc trilogy. Dark souls 1-3 is dlc trilogy. Makes sense yeah?
What? You make no sense...this is a sequel, and if this is a DLC...then GOW 2 and GOW 3 are DLCs as well, you thinking gow ragnarok is dlc of 2018 makes your opinion invalid for many reasons
Stop spreading fals Informations there was no dynamic 4k 60fps/30fps mode on the on the 2018 game. There was a 1080p 30fps cap mode for base ps4 and and a unlock 1080p mode for ps4 pro + a capped checkerboard 4k 30fps mode. If u play the 2018 Gow on ps5 u get checkerboard 4k 60fps.
Great video! But I gotta say I hate this "tiny detail" bs increments with new games. "If you zoom in... you'll see Kratos has 4 wrinkles instead of his previous 3"... pshh!!!
What a phenomenal review. These are how reviews should be done! Thanks for this. Super glad I stumbled across this page. I guess I can wait a bit longer for this game to drop down in price a bit :)
