@@danielhirrel3712 I think that he might have been thinking of Linda before singing this. She was with him through the Beatles' breakup and the establishment of Wings. He worshipped her. You never heard anything bad about them.
You wouldn't believe that Brian Wilson was so jealous of the Beatles that he tried to suicide after the beatles released the great srgnt peppers album..
They DID, in a manner of speaking. Ludwig, at the time a "child prodigy" pianist (ten years old, a few years before he started composing in earnest) performed some Mozart for ol' Wolfie, and the Maestro told him, "You'll go far in this business, kid." By the time Ludwig was an adult and was ready to learn more about composition from Mozart, WAM had died, before that could happen.
austin teutsch No. JS Bach and Mozart OR Claudio Monteverdi (creator/originator of Italian Opera) and Jean Baptiste Lully, Creator of French ballet opera music for Louis XIV. Each specialised in creating a secular singing music representative of a unique national feeling and language, even tho both originally worked in the same language, Italian. But with +/-100 years between them they couldn’t immediately bounce off each other like the Beatles and BBoys. Before Monteverdi, there was very little secular singing music that spoke-told a story, Monteverdi is considered a father of opera. Before Lilly, there were court musicians and composers but not one who could do it all PLUS write dance music, ballet music, fit for a dancing king. Both JS Bach and Mozart were FAMOUS for their voicings and improvisations, while McCartney and Wilson were/are compositional craftsmen as well as skilled in the disciplines of counterpoint, voicing and (sort of) improvisations.
Paul McCartney has said that this is his FAVORITE SONG!!! Pretty huge compliment, Brian Wilson, coming from a former Beatle. Both are musical geniuses!!!!
William Jordan that was Paul and Linda’s song.. after they left bag of Nails they headed to see Procol Harum were they heard it the first time together.
You can serch in yt , IA 'God Only knows Beatles I' , It's sounds creepy, really great done, almost extract from the past , I don't put the link due to yt recognition of spam
@@markstevenson6635 Underated? The man is a musical genius, the Beach Boys were second only to the Beatles, and that was mainly because Lennon, McCartney and Harrison were all in the one group!!
It's still nice to hear other versions, if only to prove how perfect Carl's voice was. And, as a Nice bonus, it's Paul's favorite song: and you can almost hear it in his voice.
That's undoubtedly not the only time he ever heard the album. He was wealthy enough to buy his own copy of the record, you know. He's probably listened to it lots of times AFTER writing Sgt. Pepper as well. So your "Wrong" is almost certainly wrong.
Deanna Bayless Most likely Brian sent Paul a copy. He used to get rough Beatle album takes before they were released from Paul so he most likely reciprocated.
Brian and Sir Paul had a running competition. Who won? Only the WHOLE WORLD! Rubber Soul, begat Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds begat Sgt Pepper. Sgt Pepper begat Smile. Hateful Mikey KILLED Smile! steve
Total nonsense comment. Early black artists and Buddy Holly/ The Everlys ignited The Beatles' career and harmony groups like The Four Freshmen inspired The Beach Boys. The Beatles, when supremely confident in their music formula, were ears-open to The Byrds and Dylan, both of whom had impact on their music. Dylan especially, right to the very end. It's everywhere evident in George's playing, John's lyrics. (Back In the USSR was just a one-off tongue in cheek nod to The Beach Boys who were so into their " Beach Boy groove" that it's impossible to say for certain if Beatle Paul had any influence whatsoever on the jewel of a creative mind belonging to Brian Wilson.) Credit Paul though for bringing the element of "Britishness" (a measured reserve and distance) to many great melodies, lyrics and vocals, a critical element without which there could not have been a Beatles.
Once upon a time these 2 guys were 2 of the most creative and innovative and relevant musicians in the world. They pointed music in the directions that it went and they inspired millions to sing and play guitar and start bands and write songs but it would never be like this again. 1963-1968 was the best of the best. I know there was great music after that but by then the genie was out of the bottle and the innocence was gone. Once John got with Yoko there was no going back.
Their birthdays are only two days apart...1942 Paul June 18th and Brian June 20th. So nice to have these two Geminis together...paths destined to cross.
Not sure if anyone really knew what this album and song meant to McCartney back then. He actually went to Brian's house back in 1966 to express his appreciation to Brian, but Brian actually hid in the closet and didn't answer Paul's knock/doorbell. Real story!!
Bill Carroll He didn't know it was Paul. There's plenty of reasons, if you are Brian Wilson, you might not want to answer the door. But, yeh, he was paranoid.
ardalla535 Ardalla, I love your posts. We think alike in our tastes! Very nice. I'm basically a FB person, but getting more and more into RU-vid. Thanks for the post.
Bill Carroll The story is Paul tried for a 1/2 hour to get Brian to answer but to no avail. Before he left he said he could hear Brian quietly weeping.
Paul and Brian shared so many things: a working-class perspective on the highs and lows of everyday life; a sense of being different from others; the feeling of being overwhelmingly in love with another person; and finally, an existential loneliness that permeates all their music. How wonderful, then, that they were born just days apart and were each other’s biggest fans. Especially when we know that to them, WE, the average Joes, are the ones they wrote all that music for and will always be what their lives were dedicated to.
I think Paul himself said that he was losing it at the end because of the emotion it sparked in him. He said it's truly amazing what Brian can tick in your heart and very few songs he said make him cry....Actually.. you can hear it from the beginning!
What an honor for Paul McCartney to share the stage with Brian Wilson. He must have been thrilled. I think he must have thought in his mind that he had finally arrived. To share the stage with the man who influenced the Beatles more than anyone.
These are two geniuses who had tremendous respect for each other. Paul always said that Pet Sound was the greatest album ever made. However, it was Elvis Presley that had the greatest impact on John and Paul with Little Richard coming in right there with Elvis. Now the “Nerk Twins” did say that Elvis’s influence on them declined after he went into the Army. Brian Wilson was a giant in their eyes but I don’t think he was of greater stature than Elvis in the beginning. But I do agree that once you’re getting into 1965 and forward it was always about Brian and The Beach Boys. I read somewhere that after Sgt Pepper, Brian especially had a hard time because his mates didn’t want to evolve the sound of the BB. The Beatles were lucky in that all 4 of them were always pushing forward and looking for opportunities to innovate.
@@memphisflashfan1 McCartney is a genius memphisflash? really? be specific, give me an example of ANY song that McCartney did that you'd label as genius. I think McCartney is a wonderful, prolific song writer who penned one of THE classic melodies of the 1960's, 'Yesterday' and several others that I won't bore you with naming them. But genius? really? when his songwriting partner was writing stuff like 'I Am The Walrus' (whatever the hell that means) and 'Across The Universe'......he was writing such forgettable classics 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?' ha! really Paul? 'Why Don't YOU Do it in The Road?' I'll watch from the bleachers, or 'Honey Pie' which is a flat-out vaudeville tune that could have been written in the 1920's when my grandmother was a virgin.....ha! I like a lot of McCartney's work, I really do. I think he's gifted melodically BUT! a lot of his songs have the 'smell or flavor' of someone else's tune. He seems to listen to other people work and 'rework it', you know change the chords here or the time signature there, or start with the chorus instead of the bridge yatta, yatta. Basically reworking the tune to give it a new appearance. Sort of a song facelift. Not all memphis but several. And if Pauly was a genius (as you screamed from the mountain tops) 'PAUL'S A GENIUS, PAUL'S A GENIUS) he wouldn't need to look over his shoulder to see what some other song writer's had done before him
Friendly rivals back in their peaks, they admired and inspired each other. This was one of Paul's favorite songs of all time. Well done, Brian (and Carl RIP).
Brian's dealing with deafness and lots of medication that he has to take to keep him functioning without illicit drugs. So. .. all those things play into how he performs which is only being realistic. God only knows how much we love and thank Brian (and Paul) for so many years of great music!
I don’t think Brian in 2002 was on “lots of medication” Brian’s era of taking medication was under the treatment of his crazy therapist, Eugene Landy, who forced him to take huge amounts of anti-psychotics.
These 2 musical legends were born 2 days, 1 ocean & 1 continent apart, & soon after I type this, they will attain 75 years on this earth. Happy Birthday to both!
Paul's favourite song of all time. The problem he said is that he couldn't sing it without getting emotional, and there he is singing it with Brian. Both bands challenged for top spot and in doing so created some of the best music ever.
+Dana Stone he's not the only one. i don't cry easily. beethoven was crazy; brian had problems but came through. both had hearing problems. hope brian won't mind being put alongside beethoven - both have given me so much listening pleasure.
Beautiful song and the energy of having these two musical visionaries together on the same stage transcends the bad notes and raw mix of the recording. God only knows what the world would sound like without them.
It is well documented that this is Paul McCartney´s all time favorite song and that speaks for itself. For all of us Hawthorne High School grads that is special.
There are two songs off the top of my head I can think of that will automatically make me cry no matter when or where I hear them. One is "God Only Knows" as originally recorded by the Beach Boys. The second is "The Long and Winding Road" by the Beatles. The emotional power of both of these songs is overwhelming, in my opinion.
This made me smile because I know how much Paul loves this song! How special to have these two men together who really moved rock songwriting along a ton!
Never saw this clip before, but it's so good to see (and hear) Sir Paul get to perform his all-time favorit Beach Boys song with Brian. These guys have so much respect and appreciation for each other that each band attempted to outdo each other back in the day, driving each other to record some of the best music ever. I agree with Paul, I can't help but get teary-eyed whenever I hear this song. A lot of BB songs can do that to you. RIP Carl and Dennis Wilson and John Lennon.
This is so special because: Brian Wilson is a genius musical composer....and Paul McCartney has often said this is his favorite all time song (know I am repeating what others have mentioned but don't care). HOW BEAUTIFUL. Be still my heart.
Not Silly Love Songs. That was inspired by a comment made by John Lennon. Whenever Paul heard God Only Knows he thought it was the most beautiful love song that he'd ever heard and indeed composed an "answer". It was "Here, There And Everywhere". .
Incorrect. Here There and Everywhere was already written. When the Beatles recorded Here There and Everywhere, they indicated they were actually inspired by Wouldn't It Be Nice. And McCartney has actually said his real favorite on the album is You Still Believe In Me. The gorgeous double tracked lead vocal version is only on the mono Pet Sounds. They couldn't find the vocal overdub for the stereo mix.
You guys may not know this, but I just let out the strangest sound filled with agony and content. I love you, Brian Wilson. I love you and your music all day, erryday.
"I've actually performed it with him (Brian) and I'm afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down. It was just too much to stand there singing this song that does my head in, and to stand there singing it with Brian."
@@kimisdaman And like all of us fans - we still really can't believe Brian survived the distance to still be here. Paul must have felt he was performing with an all round miracle - very spiritual indeed. AND Paul's regular acknowledgement of Brian's talent had to be a big contribution to Brian's healing. The music world at it's best.
Two Legends singing together, and Guess what..They are still alive!..Drugs and everything that goes along with Fame,Didn't Put them Down...Godspeed to Micheal and Prince,They never got do a Duet!
Fun fact: Paul and Brian were born just two days apart in June 1942. I don't know what was in the air that week, but it created two of music's greatest minds
Agreed Carl could cut right through your heart with this ballads and the "sibling harmonies" Phew. Man if you don't tear up on this song . theres something wrong with you. This was the progenitor of Paul's "Here There and Everywhere" Paul chose to resolve the complicated harmonies of "God only knows" with complicated and ground breaking arpeggiated melody lines. Probably the ONLY band in the world The Beatles had to pull out all the guns to match.
The Bee-Gees also had amazing tonalities on their harmonies "Words" was one of those songs that just sent shivers up my spine. The beginning of New York Mining Disaster 1941 was such a pure demonstration of harmonies that had the song only been "In the event of something happening to me.." It would had been a masterpiece.
