God Save the Queen vs Star Spangled Banner in Canada

God Save the Queen is Canada's Royal anthem but people are rarely exposed to it, except for occasions like Remembrance Day and Royal visits. However, many Canadians are familiar with The Star Spangled Banner, the Anthem of our influential neighbour to the south.
Do you think Canadians should know the Royal Anthem? Is it still relevant?
If you are from another Common Wealth Nation like Australia or New Zealand, what the status of God save the Queen in your country?

Speaking as a patriotic American, I find it rather sad that more young Canadians know the American national anthem than God Save the Queen. Canada's history is part and parcel of British history, and it should be honored. Cheers to y'all, from south of the border.

I don't usually post things here on RU-vid, but I find this disgusting. I grew up in the 80s when we sang the Royal Anthem to tribute our British commonwealth partnership with Great Britain. This great country would not exist without British excellence and it's great influence. As a Canadian who loves Great Britain, and I love being a member of the commonwealth, I will happily teach my daughter the Royal Anthem. Even though she was born in America. We have a great heritage borne from the great British influences of the 19th centuries and past.

Someone There is a lot of exchange between the countries that you mentioned. In the R.A.F. you will find pilots from all of these countries on a secondment. Just as you will find in the R.C.A.F pilots from these other countries, and of course they share millitary intelligence.

It's the same status in Australia and New Zealand, only played for military ceremonies, royal visits or remembrance and Anzac day. It's too bad really but most Canadians don't even know it's still an official anthem. We complain about having no history yet fail to celebrate are actually history. Yeah we are a young country but so are the states. Keep God Save The Queen. Loyal she began and loyal she remains.

Canada really isn't all that young, these days. Not when you consider that the vast majority of nations on Earth today have only existed since WWII. Lots of countries only stretch back as far as the 60s, 70s, 80s, or even as last as the 90s. France, the current political republic, has only existed since 1945. France is only a mere 12 years older than Ghana, which came to be in 1957. Ukraine only became an independent country in 1991. Canada, formed in 1867, is old and venerable compared to most of the young upstart nations. It's time that Canada, Australia and New Zealand stopped trying to give themselves facelifts and kidding themselves that they're young. They're older than many nations around today. But that's never stopped them being beautiful.

Back in the early 1980s I served in the US Coast Guard and was stationed along the US-Canadian border. The station was literally close enough to Canada that a stone thrown from shore would have landed in Canada. We trained often with the Canadian Coast Guard boats. They would stop in and have a cup of coffee and us with them. So I learned a lot about Canada while I was there. I have friends in the UK and have visited them in England. He was a Royal Naval Officer. So I learned God Save The Queen before I went to impress them. I found out that unlike the US, almost no one has a Union Flag as they are only flown by government organizations there. Here many have the Stars And Stripes and fly it from their homes. You don’t see the Union flag flying from some battered home after a disaster has struck, like here in the US. It is just a difference in our respective countries customs and practices. To hear your country’s National Anthem played by a staunch ally is very moving. It’s not done lightly.

The moment you become part of a nation, you absorb their history and heritage. At the end of the day, Canadians of French and Indigenous descent are just that: Canadians. The Queen of the UK also reigns concurrently as Queen of Canada, and so "God Save The Queen" exists not only as the British national anthem, but also as the Canadian royal anthem.
