As of the 8th of February 2023 Godot 4 is no longer in Beta and has had its first official release candidate! In this video I talk about what that means, and some new about my Godot course.

I haven't even used Godot (except for some playing with it some months ago) but I'm watching it closely I can't remember since when! It's by far, the most impressive open source project I've seen when it comes to speed of development!

I've considered learning Godot, mostly for quick prototyping as it's so much swifter to get going than the big game engines that I already know. But at the time upcoming 4.0 features was all that the Godot channels (I could find) were talking about, so I decided to wait for it to get stable. It's been a long wait 😅 Though 4.0 looks good enough that it might cover all my use cases for a full game.

There will also be release candidate 3, and a stable version should be released in March.

Is it Godot or Godot though? The icon is a robot, which rhymes with Godot. On the other hand, saying Godot sounds fancy. I think I'll just call it Fred.

Godot logo is simple, beautiful and iconic. No need to pursue "industry design trends" or something like that. Any redesigns I've seen are only change for the sake of change and don't improve upon the existing one at all. The current logo is unique and perfectly captures the spirit of the project: minimalism, elegance and being focused on the user. I don't see any need to update that - this isn't a corporate entity trying to project "progress" with their updated logo like Pepsi, Pringles, Autodesk or Adobe, that are also... completely missing the mark. No. Godot is different, and it should stay that way :)

Honestly I'd rather have a lower user base than giving up my personality :P But I am not the lead of Godot project anyway. Godot is not a project that has corporate shareholders like Unity, so it doesn't have to take all decisions solely based on "market appeal" and "maximizing impression conversion" and stuff like that. Sensible people come to Godot because they see what's possible and get excited about it's unique approach (and open-source nature), not because it changed it's logo to match this year's business guidelines. And I'd rather have it stay that way.

I think they should give themselves 3 to 6 more months just for bugfixing before doing a so called "stable" release. I told that to the team - I think releasing in the current state will backfire, but maybe I'm the only person who stumbles upon showstopper bugs every week. I spoke my mind about this to make sure devs are aware of what I think will happen. Let's see :P

shocking news: big piece of software has bugs. literally large scale application software you're interacting with has bugs, difference with godot is that that buglist is public

godot is open source and is mostly contributed by its community and devs that love godot. it not a company that gets investors? lol "On its own, Godot has no legal status. Godot exists as a member project of the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC)."
