In this video, we demonstrate the versatility of Blender Grease Pencil, by creating a simple character and other assets for a game. These are utilised in the free and open-source Godot game engine, to create a simple platformer.
This video is made in celebration of this channel reaching 10K subscribers. Thank you all so much for all of your interest and support.
I'm still working on my music video project, so watch out for more updates, coming "soon".

Could you please give a brief explanation on how you exported the animations from Blender? I'm guessing here, but did you manually render each animation as an image sequence in Blender? Here's to hoping that Godot some day gets a way to import Grease Pencil objects in .blend file format, or another more efficient / intuitive workflow method :D
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Hi, there. You're right, I rendered each animation as an image sequence. Perhaps, if I were making a full game, then I might write a python script to render them automatically, but as it is, this process was fine. I agree about bringing in blender files into GODOT more conveniently, but I don't see how this would be achieved.

Awesome video! Subscribed! What format do you save the animated sprites in to be imported into game engine please??
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Thanks. Im so glad that you liked it. I used PNG sequences. Thus isnt very efficient for the game engine, but its not too hard to convert the sequence into a sprote sheet. I hope that this is helpful. Thanks again

Great stuff!! How would you compare Blender Grease Pencil with Moho Pro / Spine ? I am a Unity Dev and I would like to use Procreate- drawing bone bits(IPad), and Blender Grease Pencil- bone rigging 2D animation. It would be great if you could comment on the productivity and ease-of-use aspect in particular. Thanks!
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Hi there, thanks for the interest. Each of the three programs that you've brought up have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I used to use moho, it simpler and easier to learn, but I've since moved over to blender, because I believe in the open source movement, along with some other advantages like 3D intergration . That being said, though I've never used Spine before, its ability to import the rigs directly into Unity without having to export to an image sequence, is something to be considered aswell. I've been a bit rambling in this response, however I hope that I've been helpfull to you in some way. :)

@@SketchySquirrel Yes it did help! I was just wondering if the 2d animation frames (in Blender) can be exported as a bunch of .png files or not ? My framework in Unity requires set of images to create animation movement...

Nice video, i have one question. How do you export/import the 2d animated player from blender to godot? Thank you
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there. Good question. I simply exported an image sequence for every animation. Another option would be to convert the image sequence into a texture atlas, that would be better for performance, but for this use an image sequence is fine. I hope this is helpful. All the best :D

hey what format did you export the blender files to import them in godot???
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi Abin. I exported the animations as PNG sequences. For 3D there's better integration, but with 2D, I think that this is the only way to do it. Thanks for commenting

May I know , the spec of your desktop, like GPU, ram and stuff like that? Is it possible to render the animation in laptop with an external graphic card
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi Junu, sorry for the late reply. My GPU is an Nvidia GTX 1070, and my CPU is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700, 3.6 GHz. Keep in mind that Blender, especially Grease Pencil doesn't need a fancy computer and specs. If you're rendering 3D objects in cycles, then a good GPU can be useful, but it's not necessary. As for the external graphic card, I don't know, I've never used one, but if it's not possible, most things in blender will be able to be rendered using the CPU inside you're computer. I hope that this helps :)

How did you import grease pencil assets into Godot I am having issues..?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Hi Nitsua. To answer your question, I didn't. As far as I know, it's impossible to import Blender Grease Pencil objects into Godot, or any other game engine. Instead, I rendered each of the animations out as an image sequence. This could then be imported into Godot. I hope that this was helpful.

How do you export the grease pencil character sprite into godot?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 9 месяцев назад
Hi, sorry for the late reply. To export it to sprites, you can add a camera to your scene, position it so that it contains your entire character animation, and then set you output settings, choosing the resolution etc, then you can just render it as a PNG image sequence. That's all I did for this video, but if you want better performance, I would then convert this from an image sequence, into a sprite sheet. I hope this is helpful. :)

Godot is C# ?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
You have some options in Godot. Most people use GDscript, which is like Python, made specifically for the Godot engine, but you can also use C++ or C#, or even a simple visual programming language. Thanks for the comment, I hope that this helped.

can you make a 2d game in blender engin?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Hi there. It's been a long time since I've used BGE. Hypothetically, yes. If you use images, and rig that up, then yes, it's not too difficult. If you want to use Grease Pencil, you would have to animate it in a version of Blender, after 2.8, and then export to an image sequence, and use that in blender 2.79 or before, to use the game engine. I hope that this is helpful. :)
