@@WesPerry one thing I was surprised about but believe after the testing (since flash is new for me), is that the FVs don't support TTL. I posted a question on BH for the FV150, and that was the answer that came back. I was a bit surprised. is that what you saw as well?

I bought an FV150 and was initially a little disappointed as I was expecting much more from the flash/strobe element even so this light offers amazing colour quality from the COB LED as a continuous light, especially at this price. I've used it for several portrait sessions already and been extremely happy with the results. If you are in the market for a continuous light of this form factor I think this is one to definitely consider, even if you ignore the flash capability this offers great value as a continuous light.

I've just watched April review of Godox VL150 by Camera Cravings. The new VL150 comes with a remote control that changes the light level while the button is pressed. It is a nice device, but it costs a little bit more. The new VL200 is not available yet. If they could make FV150 II based on the VL150 that would be interesting, but it would probably be too expensive for a 150W light.

I think I have a VL150 on its way now. Interested to see how they compare.
@michaels3003
@michaels3003 4 года назад
The remote control is not responding slowly. It is simply waiting for the human to stop pressing the button. It then sends ONE command to the unit (the new light level) instead of a few per second. If you make a small adjustment at a time, this not a problem; for large adjustments, it is. Ideally, it would have a few custom presets than can be quickly selected.
@WesPerry

I’m aware that that’s how it works. Unfortunately it scrolls so slowly it’s usually faster to get up and go turn the knob on the light yourself.

Hi Wes. Thanks for your great review. Thumbs up! I didn't realize Godox made a hybrid light. Looks interesting, although as you pointed out, less than ideal for action stuff. But if simply using for portraits, then it should be just fine I'd imagine. I also have the Godox SK400 Version 2 in case I need a "real" flash. I noticed your Adorama link now has this on sale for $229 versus $349 normal pricing, so that makes this hybrid flash a bit more appealing despite its limitations and quirkiness. Maybe yes, maybe no? By the way, at 15:30 time line, I was wondering what the hay are you holding for a microphone for her to speak into, then I realized it's the Rode Wireless Go transmitter...duhhh! I use that same Go mic, haha! You should get the Rode Interview Go Handheld Mic Adapter stick to attach the transmitter to for looking like a real "reporter" LOL! I just ordered one of those stick adapters for $29 so I don't have to hold out my hand. The funny thing is that many user reviewers for that mic adapter say it's simply an over priced piece of plastic...oh well!

Very good review. You were generous with your marks though, given the later discussion of its limitations. I think we will see more of this kind of hybrid once the engineers work on it further. Many products are introduced before the design has matured. I didn’t say perfected… . On the Strobepro site, in their blog section, they now have a chart of Godox lights with measured output values arranged so they can be compared. Speedlights come off really well. If they keep this current, it will be a great help. And, your insightful reviews will augment the other available info. Thanks for your thoughtful reviews.

THX for the nice review Wes. I got myself one unit of the godox FV150 after wtahcing your video. I don`t quite understand the part of the recycle time for action photography (maybe it is due to my english skills, I`m german so no native speaker here). I shot 1/1600s F1.8 ISO 125 with my sony A7III bursting 8 shots per second and the FV150 delivered every shot in high speed snyc. with the same amount of light. It was set to 1/2 Power Output. My AD400 pro set to an equivilant output of 1/32 +0,7 missed every second and sometimes third shot. But I had no moving object so I don`t know about the flash duration for action shots. In that scenario the FV150 clearly outperfomed the AD400Pro! Did I miss something? You mentioned blury shots of the dancer was that due to flash duration?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
Blurry shots were due to the flash duration, yes. That’s odd about the recycle time, though. At 1/2 power mine takes close to a second to recycle, not even with high speed sync. I’d have to go down much lower to get 8/second. What was your continuous light set to? Maybe I need to set mine lower to get faster recycle? (I had it most of the way up).
@stringgunner69
@stringgunner69 4 года назад
Well it doesn`t matter whether my modelling lamp has 100% output or 10%. I receive the same positive results. The modelling lamp turns off during the flash burst. It takes longer for the modelling lamp to come back on than for the flash to be ready to shoot again. So if I shoot bursts the lieve view gets dark in my sony. Would be cool if the modelling lamp would stay on all time. Sad to hear flash duration seems to be too long? Continious Lighting propably will be the best option for action.
@michaels3003
@michaels3003 4 года назад
@@stringgunner69 , this model has a modeling lamp FUNCTION, not a separate lamp. The CL mode is turned off, the LED flashes one or more times with a 4x PEAK power, it is turned off to cool down, finely the CL mode is turned on (somewhat gradually) to function as a modeling light. Since it is not an auxiliary lamp, the CL power can be set to the maximum level that the FV150 can produce. It is much better to keep the CL level lower to make the LED less hot between the flashes. CL means continuous light. Also, I don't believe the 50k hours lifetime if the FV150 is used frequently in high power modes. Currently, there is no standard how such estimates are calculated.
@stringgunner69
@stringgunner69 4 года назад
@@michaels3003 THX for that information. In the meantime I tested some action shots with moving objects and got the same results as Wes. The flash duration defintly is too long to freeze action. Very missleading advertising from Godox in this case. But as a continous light source it still is a keeper.
@michaels3003
@michaels3003 4 года назад
@@stringgunner69 , there is a "refreshed" model coming that looks different at the bottom and has the new "dimpled" reflector. I assume it will be more quiet. I still think it is interesting, because if very short light duration is not needed, it can increase exposure by two stops for something like stop motion photography. The illumination should be exactly the same in CL mode and in the simulated flash mode. It should be what you see is what you get. Real flash is too short to see the illumination of the subject, so a lot of photos must be taken to get exact results. I just wish the price differential was lower.

Another question: How to do you find warehouse space to use for a day or two?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
It’s pretty difficult. It took me a long time to track one down. That’s the short version. We were only in there for an hour and a half. The long version is I did a bunch of work for the ballet and the fellow who owns the warehouse(s) also works with the ballet so we made the connection that way.

Hello I'm trying to figure out the flash power of the strobe in this light, is it it 600 watt on flash mode? And 150 watts in Led constant light mode? Thanks
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 2 года назад
Are you trying to compare it to the Watt-seconds of an actual strobe, or continuous watts of light output?
@anjummohammed2498
@anjummohammed2498 2 года назад
@@WesPerry most strobes are classed as 200,400,600 watt etc, where as this one just mentioned fv150, so I understand the continuous light is 150 watts but Im trying to figure out in strobe flash mode what does that equate too? Is it 400 or 600 watts? I need it to stop motion like food droplets and water etc. But I saw another review and they said it's not that good at stopping motion.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 2 года назад
Ah, so you’re looking to compared based on Watt-seconds (which is how strobes are classified, not Watts. Units are tricky but important!) On that scale, the flash on the FV150 is only around 10-20 probably. Yeah, it’s THAT low.
@WesPerry

Pretty much useless for stopping motion.

Nice review love the intro Wes. I keep debating whether to upgrade my yn900 panels which have done me well so far. Have you had any experience with those at all? Re the remote I wonder if there is a model coming with variable wb? That would be useful for mixing into ambient without power sapping gels
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
Thanks, Greg! I haven’t seen anything even close to this price range with variable WB yet, so that’s would be interesting. It would be incredibly difficult to accomplish with the COB LED design this form factor uses, though. I don’t have any experience with the YN panels, no. Just some of the round ones (as seen on this channel). There are ups and downs to both. Sometimes you don’t have space to slap a huge diffuser on a light and a panel is much more appropriate. But it’ll never give you the same quality of light as one of these with a soft box.

Thanks for detailed informative video, I am looking for very long time godox continuous lights for food and product photography with my other speedlight because I usually work in daylight and color temperature is significat for me as you know sometimes cloudy weather, so this light ,Does it offer values similar to the best results for this price range, thanks for the answer, sorry for english grammer..:))
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
The colour temperature doesn’t Exactly match up with that of a speed light. Although it’s very good, it’s still not right up there with a real flash just yet. But it is still just about the best quality of continuous light you’ll get in this price range.

it's $200 now in 2022. Given that LED 150W cobs are $20, a heatsink is $20 and a power supply is $50 not sure why it is even $200. The flash function is kind of a joke. it's got the output of a speedlight at 1/4 power if that.

Silly questions but how would you gel or color on these?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
Three possibilities: 1) get a high temperature gel from a good manufacturer to put over the LED (I'd be Really careful about this one, as many aren't as temperature resistant as they claim) 2) get a soft box with an integrated gel holder, like the Aputure Light Dome line 3) Use a stock reflector gel. They're a pretty standard size to cover the front end of a regular reflector.

You’d want a normal flash, and with lots of power. Generally speaking, the lower you have the power level of a particular flash set, the faster the flash. So something like the AD400 or AD600 / Pro flashes will give you the best action freezing.

@WesPerry

Its continuous light is about half as powerful, so it wouldn’t put it in the same class. Also lacks the all in one design, requiring a large external power supply (which, admittedly, some prefer, but I’m not a big fan of). It also has a real flash on it, not LED based. Closer to an AD400/600, just with brighter modeling lamp and dimmer flash, placing it in between the AD400 and FV150 for outputs one both sides (one up, one down).
