In this video I go over the Photometrics on the Godox FV150 LED Hybrid Flash in both LED and Flash to see how it compares to other products.
The Godox FV150 Hybrid merges LED continuous luminous flow and Flash light burst insta-peak technology. The COB LEB retains the traditional intensity of the LED module for unbroken delivery of high intensity 12,000 lux at 1 meter, while still delivering bursts of action arresting High Speed Sync flash illumination. The FV150 wirelessly links to the entire X series family of transmitters, accepting commands for flash intensity, in 16 groups and 32 channels. Amazing; a source for the lumen hungry videographer and a boon to photographers, commercial and still-life, without compromising precision visualization, in one hard to match 7.3-pound / 3.3-kilogram compact package. The color accuracy at 5600øK sustains greater than a CRI at 96Ra and scores a TLCI measurement that exceeds 95.
One source for all imaging requirements is a dream come true. Three Flash Modes: Single Flash, MultiFlash and HSS bring all the benefits of brilliance as a strobe's frozen moment - up to the quickest shutter speeds a camera can fire - rivaling High Speed Sync with four times the output of the LED module. As the energy source is solid AC, the hybrid can deliver 10 consecutive flashes per second and 8 in HSS mode at 1/2 power setting. There is no difference between the perceived light of the LED and the flash image - they are one and the same! What you see is what you get! It is as though the sun has a place in your strobe.
While all of this sounds too good to be true, the flash takes predominance over the LED and imitates a legacy monolight, with complete variable modeling lamp to flash ratios and power settings from 1/8 to 1/1 - 7.0 to 10.0 - displayed as fractions or decimals. The COB LED has a brightness range of 0% to 100% as the main light and while it acts as a modeling source, 5% to 100%. The generous LCD infopanel display reports complete status of the light while staying on top of the action. Heat dissipation is so precisely designed to keep the intense beam active throughout the day without missing a beat.
All of the popular Bowens mount light shapers make the light perform to your specs and respects the investment you have made in Glow and other modifiers.
Beyond all of the typical video and still applications of the FV150 three Flash Modes comes the additional five special effect modes that will take the light to the next creative level. Imitate a lightning storm, the legacy TV flicker, or the death throes of a broken fixture, it's all here.

Informative as always Robert! When I watch your videos I really get a sense you respect your viewers time and don't waste 2 minutes talking nonsense for every intro, which is very appreciated these days :). I see you picked up a Mola Setti, would you consider doing a video on it or is it too niche a product? I've been looking at getting one, but I'm not sure it's the $600+ investment my home studio needs right now.

Thank you very much! It's against the grain of current youtube, but I make the videos I would actually watch, and don't participate in the "I've-had-this-product-for-3-hours" review, or sensationalized content. Glad to see it resonates with some viewers! As for that beauty dish, it's actually not a Mola Setti. It was a sample, that can't be sold, because of it's similarities to Mola lol. So, I won't be doing a video on it since nobody can get it, but might pick up a Mola myself here soon.

Hi Robert. Thanks so much for all your quality advice and highly regarding opinions. I bought this FV150 a while ago and haven't used it as much as I would like. For on location I do prefer smaller, lighter weight strobe gear, and I shoot with AD200pro, AD300pro and when needed AD600pro. Never just one light, usually 3. I have loved using this FV150 as a closeup fill light which was functional for shots of iso100, f5.6 for mid length and even full length, but it needs to be relatively close, just out of shot. The best thing is that it's so great as a real modeling light which can fill flash. This allows me to use smaller lighter strobes and not bother with their useless modeling lamps. The worst thing is the speed of the flash will give motion blur if subject moves. My next move will be to invest in a fresnel lens, either Godox FSL8 or Aputure 2x fresnel. If ever you have a chance to revisit this with these fresnel adaptors I would love to see your opinion on usability.

Thank you Robert for this perfect review of the FV150. But for me is one question left. In the first case i would like to use the FV200 as a still photographer but want to use it for some video interview cases for my clients as well. What do you think about the fan noise for Interviews in often small rooms ?? Is it too loud ?? Which LED lamp would you prefer for a mixture of photography and video interviews ?? Or is there a special way to fix the fan noise in post ... let's say in Final Cut ?? I want to use a lavalier mic or a shotgun ?? Thanks a lot for your help :-)

I took delivery of mine just two days ago and I have to say I am quite impressed. As you mentioned, the fan is very quiet compared to the SL products and the colour quality is excellent. Yes, the flash could be brighter, and the unit is on the large side, but all in all I am happy with it. I did buy it principally for the LED so the extra flash feature is a useful addition. The only issue I have found so far is that I needed to completely reset my XPro trigger ID settings to get the flash to fire, in turn this meant I couldn't (initially) get the AD200s to fire at the same time. That was resolved by updating the firmware on the AD 200s but no matter what I do I cant get the 580II's to fire at the same time as the FV150. In essence, by adding the FV150 to my kit I have made three speedlights completely redundant. Not exactly what I intended. I assume that at sometime in the future Godox will sort out the firmware but at the moment I am a bit stuck. Speaking of firmware, have you any idea if Godox will ever include a Mac OS supported firmware installer? Using my wifes 10 year old pc to update firmware is extremely tiresome...

Paul Saxby Hey Paul, Not sure where you are located , I’m in the US and not sure if that has anything to do with it but I have a Mac book pro and I used it to update my firmware to my flashpoint Xpro mark II trigger about a month ago without any issues. @@djbrown5365 Hi DJ, I'm in the UK. Your comment is gratefully received, I just did a search and found there is a Mac updater after all so, hopefully, I will be able to update firmware in the future. It looks like I can't update some of my kit yet (I have the Fuji 580's as well as the AD200's) as not all models are fully supported, but lets hope that is rectified soon. Thanks for your advice, its proven useful already.

On one hand the flash feature seems underwhelming but on the other there doesn't seem to be any downsides to having the flash feature so long as you're buying primarily as a constant video light. Right now I think it's only really useful as a background/practical light but that's still saving you from buying a speedlite + bowen bracket to do the same job. I'd love to see what the refined 3rd generation version of this product would be, i.e. would they able to get the flash output up to the power of a AD200 and have extra features on the video side like the silent mode from the SL series and better remote/app integration.

Hey Robert I enjoy the videos So I bought the fv150, and did some tests to calculate a Guide Number as Godox does not rate it that way I would be curious as to your calculation of Guide number. I found it to be half way between the v350 speedlight and a godox A1 smartphone flash. What’s worse is I tried HSS which works with my ad200pro/v350 but on the fv150 shows shutter curtain on only 1/1000 second I suspect the LED cannot time HSS correctly. I do like the fv150 as a video light but it seems to totally fail as a flash unit Did I get a bad copy of it ?

I highly advise not to buy fv150/fv200 if you expect hss flash I am attempting to return unit to amazon seller but site claims not eligible for return “ for safety reasons, items containing flammable liquids or gases cannot be returned to amazon” Flash won’t fire above 1/250 sec period. Calculated Guide Number is really low. No USB port for firmware updates My GodoxPhoto items for Fuji all work otherwise : GodoxPhoto A1 smartphone flash. ( about as bright as this flash ) GodoxPhoto x2t f trigger GodoxPhoto v350 F flash (about 2x guide number of fv150 ) GodoxPhoto ad200pro flash many times higher GN of fv150 Summary don’t fall for a Led unit being sold as HSS flash

Thank you so much for showing this. It’s Black Friday and these are on for a sale price and I was planning to get some entry level strobes. After seeing the comparison to some of the flashes and speed lights that I have, I think I’ll still get the MS300 strobes. I plan to use them in a double diffused modifier so I know I’d lose 2 stops of light so I don’t think the LED flash would be powerful enough for the added weight. Really I just want a decent modelling lights connected to my flashes. Too bad there isn't a small led that could be placed inside a soft box to be used for a modelling light so the AD200 can be used.
@ThomasGeist
@ThomasGeist 4 года назад
It is really crucial to know the flash duration of this thing. For motion stopping power as well as for its capability to balance (as a flash) with continuous light. In your studio example you quoted its setting at a shutter speed of 1/250s. But this only holds true if the flash duration is shorter than that. Otherwise the FV150’s output will be cut by the shutter just like any continuous light.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 года назад
That's why the meter was set to 1/250s to make sure it was consistent with that sample. But, I've got a future video planned on explaining the impact of the flash duration on this product and how it pertains to all shutter speeds.

Please help. My buying depends on this : I'm a wedding photographer I want to replace both photo and video lights (I know both are from same source is a led chip) with these two lights where I can use for both photo and video. So, I wanna know if some guy is shooting video the lights will be turned on continuously and another guy who shoots photo would need to trigger flash simultaneously while the video guy is rolling his camera. In this scenario how does the lights work? Does the video lights goes off and fires flash and turns on again (although this might take atleast 1-2 sec which is critical for video) or the video lights glow continuously and fires the flash without interruption?

Hey Rob, since led flash doesn't suffer from the same power loss at HSS as conventional flash tubes, does that mean that potentially, at a certain shutter speed (like say 1/4000) this led flash would give you a similar exposure to a traditional monolight like an ad400 at the same shutter speed? If so, it would be interesting to find out at which point they match up. Still doesn't effect me though, because I prefer to get the most out of my ad600 by staying within sync speed and using ND filters 😎 just a thought 🤷‍♂️
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 года назад
Well, it won't suffer from the efficiency loss that flash experiences when you first switch to HSS, which would be a 1-2.5 stop gain on the LED flashes performance. However after that, they would lose light equally. Because the flash pulse and led pulse stay the same, while the curtain window gets smaller and smaller reducing the light that hits the sensor as the shutter speed shortens. So basically, it's going to experience a one time jump in output once the regular flash goes into HSS but from there everything would remain equal. So, it might catch up to a speedlight in HSS, but not an AD400. Also, this is why they (and other LED flash manufacturers) keep marketing LED as "HSS flash", because it represents a closer power comparison opportunity.

Clar Illumi Max w/ reflector (from their specs) : 23500 @1m Aputure C300Dii w/ reflector (from their specs) : 45000 @1m I never trust manufacturer specs 100% but those are some pretty distant figures vs the results you cited. Guess I'll have to tinker more and see what's up.
