Godox ML60 Review & Nanlite Forza 60 Comparison | Best Portable LED Video Light

In this video I review the Godox ML60 LED video light and compare it to other battery capable COB lights like the Nanlite Forza 60, Jinbei EFII 60, Sokani X60, and more.
The Godox ML60 is small, bright, and can run off oc both AC and DC battery power. But, is it a good alternative to something like the original Godox SL60W or the Nanlite Forza 60?
This LED light uses Godox-mount accessories (instead of Bowens mount), has a removable battery handle with a separate battery plate, and includes a carrying case, which is rare for Godox lights. There are a lot of other small differences between the Godox ML60 and its competitors.
After thoroughly testing this light, I think it is one of the best small COB options available.

Do you think the ML60 is worth the cost over any of the other Godox lights? Or do you think the Forza 60 is a better choice?

What about you? Is nanlite forza 60 better than ml60?

@@leonarddai4998 Personally I prefer the ML60 because it's cheaper, better built, and the modifiers are more plentiful and cheaper. But, I have both and love both. If you have other Nanlite products, I would pay the little extra and stick with all Forza stuff. Hope that helps.

Thanks! And 💯 to that. A VL150 + ML60 might only be beat by an SL150W II + ML60 since they use the same remote, but if you need the V-Mount capability and carrying case of the VL, both are great choices.

Nicely reviewed. I'm glad to see competition in the 50/60w LED category, it's quite useful as a scratch/fill/hair light, although I personally prefer 300w and higher units for a key in most situations. Thanks for the light comparison tool. Super handy once you get a decent sized database of lights. I just tested the CAME-TV Bolzen 55QII against a Dedo and 300w tungsten, so I'd love to see it tossed into the mix against the Godox and Nanlite.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I used a Forza 60 as a key light for quite a while, although just for talking head stuff. Indoors it can be more than enough, but I typically prefer 150 watt lights for indoor key lights. 300 would just make it extra easy to not have to worry about it :) I am getting more and more lights every week, so the tool should continue to grow for quite a while!

Very helpful video. I am just getting into continuous lighting and picked up an ML60B on sale the other week after watching a number of videos and reviews. I enjoy it a lot. But I saw the Forza's products today at the camera store and they were pushing the Forza 60 with a free softbox. i was very tempted but after watching your video, it seems that the ML60 was a good purchase (especially at the deep sale price) and I probably will pick up a second. The only negative that I can see is the non-Bowens mount, but it does have the adapter and I probably will pick up the native softbox anyway because it is compact and cheap.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer Год назад
Thanks! The Forza lights don't do anything the ML series doesn't do, and vice versa, so I wouldn't switch at this point. The money you'd lose reselling wouldn't be worth a free softbox IMO. The Godox softboxes that fit the ML series natively are relatively inexpensive, so unless you REALLY need a huge softbox (which would need the adapter), I tend to stick to those. Hope that helps, I'm sure you'll have fun with it.

Although, the Rode PSA 1 isn't strong enough to hold anything I can think of with any kind of softbox. Great review! Was looking forward to this review and it doesn’t disappoint. I think the ML60 is a clear winner over the Forza 60 unless you’re invested in Nanlite. The Godox looks more refined, has quieter fans and has more included for the money. Still slightly pricey though. They could have packaged this light without the extras and sold it at like $199 and it would be a no brainer over the popular SL60W. Now the only thing missing for me is I wish they released a bicolor version of this as well. Thinking some Major League Bicolor MLB60 lol. I think I’ll pick up this light still. Can you recommend any gels to make it bicolor? Another question, do you find that the AD-S60S paired with the ML60 is soft and good enough for a talking head key light for its size or better to step up to the AD-S65S? I know there’s the AD-S85S as well but find that too big.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
I'm happy to hear you liked this one! I have many of the same thoughts, and think if the ML60 was even $249 or $229 it would sell out immediately. When the rumors started for a new Godox light, I was expecting a bi-color option, so I still think that's coming soon. And I promise if they have an MLB60 I'll use that joke haha. For my talking head videos I only use a 24" (although square) softbox, so the AD-S60S should do well, as long as it's pretty close. I use mine at just 2-3 feet away. The 85 would be a safer choice if you need a bit more distance. Hope that helps!

I've used a Forza60 in an S2 bracket. You have to mount it on its side to avoid fouling the modifier release button on the top but otherwise no problems. One nice thing about the Forza60 is the excellent native mount fresnel. It would be great if Godox made a Godox mount fresnel. In the UK the street price of the Forza60 has dropped recently. I bought one for £185 a few weeks ago, the ML60 costs £250 at the moment.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
I love it! That honestly never crossed my mind. The S2 adapter is nicer than it seems in photos, so that's a great solution. And again, you're totally right about the Fresnel. I have the Forza 60 Fresnel and their larger one and both are fantastic. I was slightly hesitant to talk about the higher pricing for the Forza light and accessories because I've noticed a lot of items going on sale from Nanlite, so I wonder if we'll see a permanent price drop. I know they are working to revamp their entire mobile app to work with newer lights without the need for a hardware bridge, but the original Forza 60 is not firmware upgradeable, so I wouldn't be surprised if they release a Mark II in the next year.
@tugwilson
@tugwilson 3 года назад
@@NewLayer The Forza 60B is firmware upgradeable via a USB port under the rear. I too would not be surprised if they came up with a MK II Forza 60. The Forza 60B page promises a projection attachment for it which should be quite interesting. I wish Godox would offer a VLock battery power option for the S30 and the ML60. The Forza 60 has the DTap cable but it's surprisingly expensive.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
@@tugwilson Yep, the 60B should be good to go once the new Nanlite app is done. I've been trying to confirm V-mount support on the ML60, but haven't heard back. I don't see why it wouldn't work with a standard D-tap to barrel cable since 2 NP-Fs are the same voltage as 1 V-mount, but didn't want to say anything without testing it myself since they don't mention it. I'll try to update the pinned comment if it ends up being possible.

Great video man, I'm torn between investing on a Godox ML60 or a VL150 as my first light. I know the VL150 is more expensive, but it's also more powerful. I also considered a FalconEyes flexible LED panel, but I want something that gives me more options... any thoughts?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
Thanks! Both are good choices, so I guess it depends on your goals. The ML60 makes a good key light for controlled situations indoors, but also a great back/hair light. So you might pick that up and down the road if you want more brightness, it can become the perfect secondary light to the VL150. At the same time, I've never regretted having too bright a light :) I am all about efficiency, so a small light like the ML60 is nice to have when you know you don't need the brightness. Overall, I typically steer away from panels and towards COBs because they have infinitely more modifier choices, so I would go that direction. I hope that helps!

BTW, I'm really caught up between choosing a CoB vs a panel light for my small home setup. I really prefer something compact and easy to setup and dismantle. Would the silicon ones that are out for the ML30 be suitable and work for compact setup?

Thanks. Panels are great because of their size, however, there's a lot more softbox options for COB lights, so it just depends. The 24-25" softboxes in the description are the smallest ones for the ML60 that fit the native mount. The only thing to keep in mind is that COB softboxes are deeper than the P60c/x softboxes, but they are softer because the surface area is bigger. geni.us/godoxads60s geni.us/glowgodoxads65 Hope that helps.

The Forza 60/60B mini Fresnel won't fit the ML60 since they are different mounts, and I wouldn't really recommend a Bowens fresnel on the ML60 because you'll need the Bowens adapter and the distance from the COB to the lens will be out of whack. *QUESTION:* If my aim is to achieve soft key / fill light as my first purchase of lighting- how do you think the ML60 will compare to a flexible LED panel like the Falconeyes? Since these flexible LEDs are Bi-Color or even RGB- this means that instead of advertised 100W or 150W - they will give you about half the power, making them probably closer to 60W, as the ML60. On the other hand, probably getting a different color other than daylight from the ML60 might be a hassle [or impossible to mount gels], and the ML60's softbox would be huge compared to a softbox+honeycomb of a flexible LED. Any thoughts, buddy? [Amazing review btw!]
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
I did a review on a similar product to the FalconEyes panel here if that helps ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cc6wD-PrzMQ.html Having bi-color can be nice for sure if you’re shooting in situations where you can’t control the ambient light as well, but like you said, you lose some power. Honestly, once you add diffusion to the flexible panels, they are essentially the same brightness as a COB with a softbox, so it depends more on whether you like the form factor. The ML60 is lightning quick to set up, which I like. I personally prefer COBs unless I am physically limited in a way where a panel works better. You can get a bunch of different modifiers whereas the flexible panels are basically just 1 locked in size. Hope that helps :)

Are any of the 60w LED lights good for shooting outdoor to brighten up the subject or shooting against windows?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
All the 60 watt lights are pretty much the same brightness. With that said, if you're using a 24" or smaller soft box, you can use them as a subtle fill light, but they definitely won't be bright enough as a key light except maybe if you're using the stock reflector, but in that case, you'll get harsh shadows. You could also maybe use one as a key light in a 24" soft box if the light is within just 1-2 feet of the subject.

@FKfilmphotography
@FKfilmphotography 3 года назад
Issue is these little lights need adaptors to fit bowens mount modifiers and then by the time you double diffuse the output is just not enough. Great as a rim, accent or background light I suppose but for that use might aswell just stick with some panels or flex led lights.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
I too think they are ideal for back or accent lights, but it works well as a key light too, indoors at least. The SL60W is the main key light for many solo creators with 36" softboxes, and this light is a teeny bit brighter. If you get the 25-33" Godox-mount softboxes, they'll lose less light too. Like you mentioned, using a Bowens adapter isn't ideal, although, the S2 bracket Godox has is much stronger than the Forza 60 adapter, so it can easily handle 36" or 48" softboxes, whereas the Forza 60 adapter is at its weight limit much sooner. I would probably still recommend the SL150W II or VL150 if brightness is the main concern, but the ML60 does make a great light if you need the portability, and can definitely work as a key without much trouble.

@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
The Lowell G-1 is only around 1000 lux at flood (39 degree beam angle) while the Godox ML60 is 3040 Lux bare bulb, which is a much, MUCH wider 120 degree beam angle. At full spot (10 degree beam), the G-1 is 6-7000 Lux. The ML60 with the stock reflector is around 13,000 Lux and the reflector is around 45 degrees I believe. So the ML60 is VERY significantly brighter than the G-1, while having wider beam angles as well for more area coverage. Although I don't have experience with the Practiclite, it is 90 watts and a Fresnel, so you can spot focus the light for higher efficiency. It's also bi-color though, so raw output wise, the ML60 should be very, very similar. You can use the Godox S2 Bowens adapter and buy a Bowens mount Fresnel if you need more controlled focusing power apart from the stock reflector. I hope that helps!

Here are my two use cases: 1. for a creative photo portrait series I am starting; 2. on-site at wedding venues where I need 1-2 lihghts that are easy to move and not going to hurt people. I was looking at your Intellytech lite cloth review. WOuld that work? Can you suggest anything else? Ideally, something a littke cheaper, if possible. Thanks, man! I appreciate your expertise and help on this.

Heyooo! The GVM 110S-RGB is a really killer LED panel at $600ish, but it's been backordered a bit. I'm not sure when it's coming back geni.us/gvm110rgb It's also not a really lightweight light, although, should be much lighter than the Nova. The Intellytech LC-160RGBW II that I have is an absolutely killer light. Also very lightweight (especially compared to anything remotely similar), and semi-soft, so even if it crashed onto someone, it's highly unlikely they'd get injured, whereas a 20lb aluminum light could do some real damage. Even if it fell on the ground, it wouldn't break, so I guess in a wedding venue type situation, that's another big bonus. It is an expensive light, but packs up super tiny, including a 2' x 2' softbox, and is very, very bright, so a great choice and very flexible for what you're doing. The GVM 800D-RGB is another option, but it's as small as you'll find before you hit pocket light territory, and not super bright geni.us/gvm800drgb Overall, if you can make the investment, the Intellytech LC-160RGBW II would be my pick, and should be in stock soon: geni.us/intellytechlc160rgbwii

@@gmartinezcabrera Sure, happy to help. The GVM 110 panel and the 800D both do have RGB versions! They also have the 50RS, which comes in kits of 1, 2, or 3 and is also RGB capable: geni.us/gvm50rsrgb The 50RS is also slightly brighter than the 800D, around 1/3 stop, but they are more expensive.

Quick question, do you measure the brightness with the reflector on?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
Nope! Never! Every brand has a different beam angle to try and cheat and seem brighter than they are. So bare bulb is the only true way to fairly compare lights :)

Do you think it is even usable when you put ML60 in a softbox? I have a UL150 and even that does not produce enough light when in a softbox with diffusion on... I am asking because I am thinking of buying one because of portability but I am not sure if it is bright enough...I want to be able to use it for both video and (sometimes) photo with my AD300 and AD400....for fashion and beauty applications...appreciate your feedback...
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
The ML60 is 1 full stop dimmer than the 150 watt Godox lights, so if the UL150 is not bright enough, the ML60 will be 1 stop darker. You can compare all kinds of lights here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Godox+ML60&light2=Godox+UL150 A lot of people coming from strobes don't find continuous lights bright enough, because they are used to shooting at ISO 100, f/8, and 1/125, but video is different. A comfortable brightness for continuous lights if in this zone: f/2.8-5.6, 1/50-1/125, ISO 400-800. So, long story short, you need strobes for photos, or to get comfortable shooting at higher ISOs and wider apertures. The other option is to buy 300 watt+ lights, or use multiple 150 watt lights in place of a single strobe. I hope that helps :)

@@NewLayer Thank you very much the link is awesome. I thought ML60 would be 2 stops dimmer than UL150 comparing the LUX output. You are right about video vs photo lighting. I think the size and portability of ML60 could be very useful and might be worth giving up one stop for it. it is a good looking light.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
@@fhdstudio Doubling the output (in lux, or any other measurement) will be 1 stop brighter. Then doubling that again will be another 1 stop, etc. And I agree, the ML60 is one of my favorite lights :)

Do you think has enough power for indoor portraits with the Godox softbox? Thanks in advance
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
Long story short, no. Even 150 watt lights are borderline for portrait photography. For headshots, yes, but... A 150 watt light in a 36" softbox will have you shooting at something like 1/125 sec, f/2.8, ISO 100-200 with the light just 1 meter away. I HIGHLY recommend strobes for portraits, because even a cheap strobe far outperforms continuous lights in output, and most photographers want to be able to shoot full body portraits with the light twice as far away at f/8 or f/11 as an option. I hope that helps.

I don't have any lights like this and don't really need more then one, what would the advantage for this light vs the Jinbei EF II 60?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
Someone else asked this so you may want to look for my reply to that just in case I forget anything here. This light is much quieter, top-of-the-line build quality, comes with a case, and maybe most importantly, is easy to buy. The Jinbei light has been in and out of stock a lot and most people have not even been able to find the remote. It also does not come with any kind of hand grip, so keep that in mind if you plan to use it handheld. This light also shares a remote with other very popular lights so it’s easier to build a complete set, although I know you said that’s not a huge consideration. The only things the Jinbei light has over this are the native Bowens mount and the price. I hope I’m not making either one sound better or worse than it actually is, because I do love both lights.

Hello, can you tell me if the Forza 60 is strong enough to be used as a keylight filming a coke in a kitchen setup? Hope to hear from you. Greetz
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
Indoors in a controlled environment (meaning no window light or anything contaminating the scene) the Forza 60 (or any 60+ watt light) will be bright enough in a 24-36" softbox to film something like that. Especially if you're shooting close ups, you can get the light just 1-2 feet away and have plenty of brightness to work with. Hope that helps :)

Hello Sir , I want to know which light is best for outdoor Shoots ??
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 года назад
If you're talking about shooting during the day, then I would highly suggest a 150 watt or brighter light. A 60 watt light would be OK only if you used the stock reflector, but then you'd get very harsh light. If you're hoping to use a softbox of any kind in daylight, you'll need a 300 watt light or brighter. I hope that helps :)

Is it the same mount as the ad200 pro? I have to get a portable strobe and a continuous light...

No this is the round Godox S-Mount, which is similar to a Bowens mount but smaller. I don’t have the AD200 Pro but looking stuff it’s rectangular form factor, it’s got to be different. If you get the Godox S2 adapter, you can adapt both to a Bowens mount though! geni.us/godoxs2bracket
