With the latest Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire coming soon, we wanted to catch up on any Kong movies we have missed to watch throughout the years, with Achara and Kristen continuing with Godzilla (2014), starring Aaron- Taylor Johnson (Kraven, Bullet Train, Tenet) as Ford Brody, a US Navy officer who returns home to San Fransisco from tour to his wife Elle, played by Elizabeth Olsen (Love & Death, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, WandaVision) and their son, only to be whisked away to Japan after his father, Joe, played by Bryan Cranston (Kung Fu Panda 4, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) is arrested while uncovering a conspiracy involving ancient and legendary beings that threaten our world.

First off, if they're old enough to remember the movie, they're 16 at the absolute _youngest._ Not an Adult, but not a child either. Secondly, if you consider "Childhood" all the way up to eighteen, that would make them, at most, 28 now. Still not a child. So, what? Are you saying you need to be an ancient 60+ year old to have Nostalgia?

I mean, we're talking fictional creatures here, you have to suspend disbelief to have a giant 600 ft monster be able to have some agility to defend itself against other giant monsters. The main criticism for these monster movies is always "less humans, more monsters" but you have to have them for exposition purposes or else you wont know why they're fighting each other besides just beating the crap out of each other.

True, Godzilla Minus One is about trauma, in the tradition of the 1954 film. The Legendary Monsterverse really captures the goofy sensibilities of the late sixties through seventies films, which were vastly more kid friendly. There’s room in my heart for both, personally.

Honestly I genuinely think this movie did the greatest job at making these feel like real animals. It even implies heavily that they have metabolic processes of breaking down radioactive oxygen, and then adapted to live in the ocean closer to the core, it would have to adapt to metabolizing radioactive hydrogen atoms, and my head cannon is that he was especially lured with the 1954 Castle Bravo test because that happens to be the first detonation of a hydrogen bomb. It’s like they accidentally created a consistency with zoology in these fictional monsters. Also, until recently I didn’t realize the MUTO’s EMP is an adaptation that probably goes off upon hatching to reduce chances of a baby getting blasted by a member of the Gojira species, it’d increase the rate of juveniles reaching adulthood for sexual reproduction and thus they would’ve spread like wildfire. I believe Godzilla adapted a process that counters the disarming of whatever metabolic process he has to convert radiation he absorbs into energy, I believe he countered it by generating his own radiation, similar to how we can create glucose in our liver from lactate through the Cori Cycle in absence of a glucose molecule and in Godzilla’s case, absence of a radioactive atoms due to probably an antagonist to whatever sensory receptor he relies on to use his Atomic Breath, which is why he was unable to use it until the end, and even then it gassed him absurdly. Godzilla’s pattern of evolution has been set up way before he started growing in size between movies and I’m just recently noticing it. Being able to apply what I’ve learned in PT school so far to animal biology, even in fiction, has been the greatest joy

25:24 not a subway but shelter. Good American version (there was a bad, bad version). The Hawaii shots were fun, the rail still does not go to the airport (yet). Waikiki looks cleaner and wider (You can't see Diamond Head from that angle) but appreciate the effort. (Also this move came out before other Marvel movie where the couple are brother/sister.)

Yeah, Godzilla isn't an alien. He's been here on Earth since, at least, the Permian period 250 million years ago. Earth is more his home than ours. EDIT: The MUTOs aren't aliens either, tho they do look like it a little. They're parasites that evolved to infect Godzillas.

I absolutely love this movie! I have watched 8 or 9 times by now. A real sense of size and awe, with perfect sound design and editing. The scene rhythms and reveals are impeccable. Unfortunately all that goes away step by step with each Monsterverse movie (except Kong: Skull Island, which is equally awesome). Godzilla x Kong is a mere silly cartoon in comparison to this movie. Can't wait to see what Gareth Edwards is gonna do with the next Jurassic movie.

28:39 if Godzilla was an alien like you claim, why would he care about the natural balance of the earth? Also just clarifying, in Godzilla lore, some of the monsters are aliens, but the MUTOs are an ancient species that were a factor in the extinction of Godzilla's species

If Cranston's character had lived a little longer than his son's actions and his words to do "whatever it takes" would not have meant as much. Plus, his death so soon provided the hurt and anger at the military and Monarch for so mishandling the situation. For example, Joe's insistence that he be reunited with Ford and Monarch's repeated refusal to make that happen. As for your waiting for Godzilla to eat the MUTO's, it was explained in other media that the MUTO's were enemies of the Godzilla's because they wanted to kill them. The Godzilla species did not consider them as food.

I sorta wish this film had been a straight-up conspiracy thriller about Bryan Cranston’s quest to prove that his wife didn’t die in a nuclear accident, but Legendary Pictures probably couldn’t afford that. The successive films hit a more consistent tone and maintain the top-notch sound design of this film, though.

I think your assessment of nuclear power plant security is not informed. Nuclear power plants in the US are shoot on sight areas. They all have armed guards and a number of other security measures. Plus with it's proximity to the large number of military bases on the West coast I think it's highly unlikely anything would get past radar and the intercept squadrons that will be scrambled if something is in the air.

I'm 61 & I have grown up watching all the Godzilla movies from the 70's. This series of the Godzilla movies is really good. I agree with you both on how the Godzilla does look great. I definitely like this version of Godzilla. Very bad ass

Flawed film, but it totally nailed the parts it had to. They filmed a bunch of it locally and did such a great job faking our rail line I forgot for a moment it didn't exist at the time. It's been a local boondoggle for years so on a side note the theater cheered when Godzilla trashed it.

Okay something I wanna complain about jaby with what you mentioned how why Godzilla moves so slow. Two words: mass and gravity, the bigger you are the slower you are. Take Ant-man for example, he moves so quick when he’s small but he’s so slow when he’s big. Stupid reason to complain lol

I was disappointed by this movie when it first came out. They'd really made it seem like a Cranston movie, and I'd just been watching Breaking Bad so I was hyped to see it. Then he died like half an hour in. Soured the whole thing for me. Years later I rewatched it to refresh before Kong vs. Godzilla and found that I actually quite liked this one. Victim of advertising.
