So, almost two months after it hit theaters, Toho’s Godzilla Minus One” has just hit a rare milestone. It now surpassed the Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite” to become one of the top 3
highest grossing non-English films
in U.S. box office history.
The record is thanks in part to the special black-and-white recut of the film titled “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color,” it hit theaters this past Friday for a one-week limited showing. The new version added $2.6 million to the film’s American sum - its highest weekend total since New Year’s weekend, - to bring it now to $55 million, passing the $53.3 million total that “Parasite” totalled in 2020 before inflation adjustment.
With another $2.2 million, “Godzilla Minus One” will pass the $57.2 million total of Roberto Benigni’s 1997 film “Life Is Beautiful” take the No. 2 spot, sitting only behind the $128 million of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.

Seriously. If they added film grain and audio pops to the film like in Godzilla '54, it would of brought this film to another level of epicness. Minus color really is the definitive version to watch this film.
@r_bear

I was curious how they would convey the menace of the bright blue of the heat ray here, and the way they did it was by having it totally blow out the film grain! Worked really well imo
@PurpleStormProductions

There was a little extra grain added. The pops would do nothing but distract, that’s not necessary. This version of the movie is also my favorite, I love it the way it is.

I’m just upset that this film wasn’t nominated for more than just special effects. The acting and story alone are award worthy! Plus on budget of only $15 million, says a LOT without spending a LOT.

The Academy Awards are such a "show" now I don't care. I care more about reviews, specifically Viewer reviews, not Reviewers. -1.0 was my top film of the 2020s so far to date.... and it leaves MASSIVE boots to fill if you want to dethrone it.

Should have won best picture, period.. just how they made the film so economically and it looks so good.. the director was direct report for every VFX artist.. ..I dunno.. maybe not.. Oppenheimer kinda exists.. but I honestly think Nolans aversion to VFX is holding back the potential of his vision at this point.. ..i.e.. the flash from the blast isn't centered on the top of the tower.. ..or the over and/or underuse of blast cannons for 'practical effects'.. ..the victory speech scene could have been much more effective, blending screams with cheers, instead of just a few obviously make-up based effects with a single charcoal torso he steps through.. the chapel or whatever they were in could have immediately started burning because the thermal pulse, then the Mach stem blows away the structure and the ashen people with it.. ..but noooo, can't do that practically, so we'll just not do it.. ..inception was the peak of his marrying visuals with story.. some of his most iconic shots have some cg element.. I just think he needs to get over it.. also, couldn't he film large format digitally and silently, letting his actors act without an imax imaxxing a foot away from his face.. like, get over romanticizing film and making movies way more expensive, time consuming and complex to produce.. I mean, how much were the prints alone? And I'm sure Nolan took 10m+ salary.. ..in this economy.. ..I mean come on.. hes lucky Barbie carried his numbers.. he needed a meme to get the numbers he did, i actually believe that..

Both versions are beautiful, but the B&W version is far more dramatic, terrifying, and horrific. The breakdown scene between Shikishima and Noriko hit harder in this version, just as the boat chase scene with Godzilla swimming after them! I can't get this film out of my head. Even listening to the soundtrack breaks me. What a masterpiece.

I have watched the color version of the movie four times already. However, when I watched the black-and-white version, I did not miss the colors at all. Takashi Yamazaki and his team did an excellent job. For instance, when Godzilla charged up during the Ginza attack, the emitting blue glow was white instead of grey, which shows the care put into it. I hope that the movie's release will include both versions.

Just seen Godzilla Minus One Minus Color... thank you Bushido Blues. Took me long enough but finally made it and watched it on the big screen as it was meant to be watched... and it is absolutely everything you said it was and more. This film has definitely taken me on a Nostalgia and Emotional ride I haven't been this emotional with a film in a long time. I even got teary-eyed for a few scenes, especially once the Authentic Godzilla theme song and Godzilla roar ripped through the theater sound system... I felt that Godzilla in this film was a terror or a reflection of the sins of war... and Noriko and Shikishima are what true humanity is during times of struggle and hardship... Godzilla Minus One Minus Color were absolutely perfect in my opinion and the Minus Color was the Icing on the cake...🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼👍🏽

I loved Minus Color, but I think the color version still has merit too. Remember, the director and the crew (wardrobe, set design, etc.) all work to put the scenes together with color in mind. Some of the thematic tones are muted or lost in B&W. I want both on my Blu-Ray and to have the choice of which to watch.

This is the BEST FILM I have seen.... not sure about the black and white because I have seen it 5 times in color so when I did see the black and white version it took me awhile to make that transition. I must say that Godzilla is more terrifying and menacing in black and white, the characters more intense and yes, every time I see this film, I get emotional, and it really moves me. I can relate to Koichi, the struggles, trying to redeem himself and how all the characters create a bond which is heartwarming. You don't see that in monster movies. They use Godzilla to face their fears, to move beyond the struggles, and gut-wrenching feelings of hopelessness and despair. Tomorrow, I will see it for the 7th time in 4DX which I have never experienced. LOVED IT

I'll always be glad I got to see both versions in the theater. I'm 58 and have pined for a redo of the original; a 1940's based Godzilla where is a monster and a metaphor. I loved the kids stuff as a kid, but the original is more of a grown up movie; with a message on about using weapons of war. And Godzilla -1, well it is a stand out movie that is grown up, and yet not kid unfriendly. And again Godzilla is not just a monster, but a metaphor, and the messages about forgiveness, survival, and respect for life are just well done.

Unfortunately only been able to see Minus One twice due to my work schedule but man am I glad that 2nd time was in black and white. You could now vividly see the damage Godzilla was taking in the film. And it really does just have a much darker tone in line with the original and it feeling like a horror movie now is very fitting The original Godzilla is essentially a Japanese ghost story in tone and through it's allegory. You encounter the supernatural early on and get away. But it will come for you again and again In Godzilla you may survive the monster's initial attack. But will you survive when it comes back You might survive the atomic bomb. But can you survive the radiation the "monster" that will come for you in the end To experience and survive the horror is to suffer. Will you be able to persevere. To live Also side note. Noticed that the musical score that played during the scenes with the fighter jet sounded extremely similar to music from Nausica of the Valley of the Wind. Perhaps an homage to Miyazaki who is known for his love of planes and his films that have helped Japanese movies remain relevant in foreign markets

Man, I agree with your commentary 100%! I saw the color version first - but the B&W version was WAY better for all the reasons you mentioned. And I felt that HEARING the film in Japanese and having to read the English subtitles made me pay attention to the dialog even more! All in all, the B&W version feels like a more SERIOUS film- and if they HAD originally released it in B&W (with English subtitles) it may have been nominated for even MORE academy awards (Best Foreign Film?) simply because it had more gravitas.

I wasn’t aware that they were releasing the new Godzilla in black and white. I’m 70 and in the town I grew up in,Clearwater,Fla,we had 3 theatres in town. The Capitol,the Carib,and the Ritz. The Capitol and Ritz were about a block away from each other with the Ritz being the older,smaller one. It was more ornate and that was the theatre that always had double and triple features on the weekends. I saw all the Japanese SciFi films there. The original Godzilla and my favorites,the Mysterians and Battle In Outer Space. Even today I love Black and white films like Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. My local movie theater didn't have Godzilla minus one until January 25th and didn't know that the version they received was in black and white and was confused when I watched it but by the end I was amazed how immersed I was in the film even in black and white and with subtitles something that recent western movies couldn't do. And the atmosphere of the theater changed too. At the emotional part where the main character going through emotions and questioning his existence the entire theater was silent as everyone just took in the scene and there were about 30 to 40 people there. And my brother who didn't even want to see the film in the first place was taken back at the films ability to keep tension and the representation of PTSD and survivors guilt. Overall good video and I can't wait to get my hands on the blue ray.

I watched this Minus COlor version with my cousin just the other day...and we were both like "Wow!! This looks like old World War 2 footage!" With the cruisers and battleships...insane level of craft given to this film.

I wish I could have seen this. I saw the colour version of it in the theatre twice. Wanted to see the "minus colour" version, but the only place showing it I could have gone to was a 90 minute drive, so I reluctantly declined. But I've been on full-blast telling everyone I know to go see it. It's the best movie I've seen in at least a couple years...

I just got to see this movie finally two nights ago for the very first time. In my area, the only version showing is the black and white version. So my first experience with this movie was in black and white and it was absolutely incredible to have that for myself. This film is near perfection and scratched a huge nostalgia itch for me as my first Godzilla movie I ever saw was the very first, which is obviously black and white. So it was like seeing Godzilla for the very first time as though I was a kid again. I almost don’t know if I want to even try watching it in color now that I have this connection between the two films for myself. I gotta say, this is easily my favorite Godzilla movie now, hands down, and one of my favorite movies in general. One of those that I can just watch over and over and never get bored of it.

I saw it two days ago. I missed the color version but got lucky and saw Minus One the last day it was shown in my theater. I was mesmerized by the the kind of story being told--from the viewpoint of ordinary soldiers who were running low on supplies and then ordinary citizens who lost everythiing and struggled to survive. This was not the standard monster movie but a hopeful story about human life: being able to live regardless of physical hardships and despite knowledge of ineluctable death. Instead of being the main actor Godzilla in this movie was used as a theme--a terrifying dread that loomed in the background of everyone's lives. As the movie focussed on everyday struggles, Godzilla was transmuted from sci-fi monster into an emblem of universal fear: the war was still palpable and continued to be waged in China and the Korean peninsula, friction between USSR and USA threatened nuclear armageddon, and what happened during war revealed that psychological death was just as deadly. Also, the story veered from previous monster films by empowering ordinary citizens to rise up when their government dissembled--resembling Seven Samurai and Rashomon more than Godzilla. Despite requiring three hankies, Minus One is now my favorite movie of the sci-fi genre.

I wish they could have left the scene when his back spine start to glow and pop up in blue (a la Sin City) in color because that was the only scene I preferred in color. What an amazing film and the first film I saw twice in the theatre since Ed Wood. Great in color, amazing in B&W.

I am really glad I went to see this movie without color. I can’t remember how long it has been since I watched a monster movie that truly inspired awe in everyone in the theater watching. I swear everyone in that theater (maybe 10-20 people) came out of the room with the biggest smile.

I have been a film fan for over 60 years. I like all kinds of film, including black and white movies. Always have. It makes me happy that young people who used to look down on B&W films as "old" are embracing the concept, and it pleases me even more that it is happening with this film, which I consider the greatest Godzilla (and Kaiju) film ever made.

Saw Minus One five times, Minus Color three times. It's an amazingly great film (writing, direction, acting, cinematography, score, visual effects, sound all A+), and Minus Color is just stunning visually. And the emotion of the film is so powerful. I love the 1954 Gojira, but I feel Minus One may actually be a better overall film. I can't wait to add both versions to my home film library.

I saw this with my grandma, because I can’t drive. We both loved it immensely and I didn’t even know there was a different version. I love that whenever Godzilla uses his atomic breath is the only time you see color. It’s a faint ethereal pink, that beautifully displays, his other worldly power in comparison to man. The black and white also captures the aesthetic of post World War II Japan, beautifully. I also love when the civilians are planning, how to combat Godzilla it’s explained with simplistic detail and physical props. This movie has definitely earned all the accolades it’s received. the other hand Universal’s Godzilla, X Kong, the new Empire looks bat shit insane, So insane that if it’s not taken seriously, it might be the most entertaining movie of the year. Hell in Godzilla versus Kong, Kong finds an ax and a charging station for it. You can’t tell me that’s not hilarious.😂 Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One are amazing while Universal’s Godzilla is simply entertaining.

My favorite "creepy" Godzilla moment in G-1-C was the look he gives the ship crews just before they cut to Shikishima's plane making its final descent. Godzilla's eyes are almost white against the black of his gnarled skin...really demonic looking. Loved it. Overall I thought they did a great job translating to BW....as a photographer, I know what's involved in adjusting values to accentuate areas of a frame, to make skin tones look right, etc. It's not easy. I do think the atomic breath scenes lost a bit of impact minus color, and some of the water stuff got (understandably) a little muddy. But I do hope they release both on DVD, because the mood (and experience of watching the film) is so completely different from one version to the other.

Godzilla shall live forever in cinema as the father an entirely new type of cinema. Is this the start of a new series of fantastic godzilla movies? One hopes so. In the immortal words of Raymond Burr, "The things he has taught us, remain."

I am so glad you showed a scene from The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. That 1953 movie was some of the inspiration for the original 1954 Godzilla. In fact, the first appearance of Godzilla on Odo island paid tribute to the Beast film. The way the soldier used a spotlight to illuminate the monster and the way Godzilla picked up people and threw them was right out of the 1953 stop action movie.

I was lucky enough to see G-1-Color this last weekend. I hadn't seen the original version since it was here and gone in a blink. As the credits were rolling, I thought to myself "There's no way I think I can ever bring myself to see the original movie.....Minus Color is a MASTERPIECE!" Of course the story, characters, score, etc were all amazing, but the way they engineered that *LOOK* for Minus Color was just mind blowing! This is THE definitive Godzilla -1 for me. :)

I’m glad I saw this minus color on its last day especially when it was my first time seeing minus one and boy I agree with you. The minus color version is now what i consider the original cut. I’ll always want to watch it in black and white now. I really hope they make a blu-ray version of this. This is the real way to watch it.

Good call on the BW version. Years ago I was in very small town in Oregon (McCall?) and went to a local theater that was open only on weekends. Same vibe as you described, old posters on the wall, just very cool atmosphere. I remember that some music was playing before the movie and my wife and I got up and danced in the aisle. The owner came down and gave us popcorn along with some applause from the other patrons. Great memory.

When I was five years old (1960), I begged my mom to let me see the original with Raymond Burr. Of course, she told me no. It wasn't until I was ten that I was able to see it on tv. One of my earliest nightmares, that I still remember to this day, is me under our house seeing it's huge foot stepping just outside. We've had a great relationship ever since. 😅

100% agree about the Odo island scene! While the cgi looks fantastic for a $15 million budget movie, there were very few scenes where some of the cgi looked iffy (like the tanks or when Godzilla was walking through the countryside). Both me and my friend agreed that the way Godzilla looked in the Odo Island scene looked a bit meh, and somewhat took us out of the moment. However, when we went and watched it in black and white the scene looked 10 times better! Same goes for those other scenes, I think the black and white helps hide some of the digital feel cgi has.
