Godzilla vs. Kong is another new big budget movie from HBO Max following Zack Snyder's Justice League and Tom & Jerry, this time about two cinematic titans going head to head. The biggest focus of the movie was clearly the versus aspect and it falls somewhere between Captain America Civil War and Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice. And if you want to see King Kong fight Godzilla, and both of them fight Mechagodzilla, you'll get just that. So in today's episode of Film Perfection, let's look at Godzilla v Kong from a versus angle and take a couple useful lessons for making a versus movie where heroes battle each other.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures comes the long-awaited face-off between two icons, “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the next epic adventure in Legendary’s cinematic Monsterverse, directed by Adam Wingard. Legends collide in “Godzilla vs. Kong” as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, Godzilla vs Kong fight scene Godzilla vs Kong mechagodzilla godzilla vs kong hong kong city fight ending fight battle why didn't godzilla kill kong everything wrong with godzilla vs kong honest trailer godzilla vs kong only action battle kong vs godzilla ending fight who won in godzilla vs kong tom & jerry hbo max watch godzilla vs kong full movie online free godzilla vs kong official trailer 4k clip hd Godzilla vs. Kong - Official Trailer cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) clash over differing philosophies about what kind of heroism is needed to protect the world, while the public they're defending is becoming increasingly mindful of the damage that superheroes and masked vigilantes cause. However, the duo are soon forced to confront an even greater threat created by nefarious billionaire Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Directed by Zack Snyder, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also co-stars Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred the butler, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
-
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
In this superhero epic, the denizens of the Marvel Universe are forced to pick sides when Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) come to blows over ideological differences. After a mission involving a new Avengers squad led by Cap ends with several civilian casualties in Lagos, the team are asked to sign an agreement that would force them to take orders from a United Nations panel. Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) pressures Cap to accept this new arrangement, in part because he feels deeply guilty about his own past recklessness; Captain America, however, fears that the Avengers will only be corrupted by bureaucracy. Their disagreement eventually escalates into all-out war when Cap's old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), now a brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier, reenters the picture. Captain America: Civil War brings back former Avengers characters such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Vision (Paul Bettany); it also drags into the fray low-rent superhero Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and introduces both the powerful African prince Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a new, younger incarnation of Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

I was just under the impression that Godzilla let Kong live because either 1) he wasn't a significant ecological/ personal threat like the MUTOs (who are known to fatally parasitize his species) or Ghidorah (who would have killed all native life to suit his own needs), 2) he was just that impressed with Kong's "gumption" in defying him to the end, or 3) perhaps Kong's roar was trying to tell Godzilla that he didn't care about ruling anything, he just wanted to be left alone until his new chair got blown up.

@Vejitatheouji
@Vejitatheouji 3 года назад
That's how I interpreted it as well. Godzilla knew Ghidorah was still around and he's the biggest threat to the balance of the world. Yes, Kong might be an Alpha. But, it Godzillas mind, he's still just a newcomer and isn't quite at the level as say Ghidorah or Godzilla. One could potentially apply this logic to why he spared him during the first fight. I seriously doubt turning off every power source on the ships would've been convinced Godzilla to leave an Alpha alone.
@natman2939
@natman2939 3 года назад
I disagree with that being considered a “Martha” moment, because it’s never stated or shown that Godzilla’s goal is KILL all rivals but rather to kill OR dominate them. We’ve seen he will let titans live if they submit and while Kong didn’t fully bow, he did drop the axe as a sign of respect and to show that he wasn’t trying to threaten Godzilla. Because Godzilla isn’t just arrogantly wanting to be King of the world, but rather a beast that deals with anything he considers a threat to himself. Consider the fact that Godzilla didn’t kill Kong in the first fight in the water either. He didn’t “think Kong was dead” even if the humans used the words “play dead” but rather thought “okay he’s down, and no longer a threat” plus he established Kong stood no change as is (which is why the axe was needed) And the whole reason Godzilla drilled a hole from China to the hollow earth is because he sensed the axe being powered up and considered it a threat. He then dealt with that threat to his satisfaction. And even after Kong saved him, Godzilla was ready to start up yet again because he saw Kong with that axe as a potential threat. Kong understood this and yielded the axe. I could also mention that the director said Godzilla considered Kong a “good titan” as opposed to the mutos and ghidora which were evil and needed to be killed and therefore a good old fashioned face melting was not required. This isn’t inconsistent because we have never seen Godzilla fight a “good titan” before. However we have seen Godzilla *confront* good titans and he didn’t even attack them when they yielded to him. Ps: the director said there would be a clear winner and Godzilla clearly won. It’s really that simple. The monkey needed his heart restarted just to survive. How is that not a clear win? You’re looking a little too deeply into goals when one of them essentially killed the other which is a clear win when it comes to a fight. But even looking at goals, everything I said above applies. Godzilla’s goal was not necessarily to kill him. So it’s not a compromise. It **would** have been a compromise in small way if Kong hadn’t yielded the axe, but he did. In Godzilla’s eyes that served the same purpose as kneeling (because again it’s not about arrogance, or pride, or being a king, it’s about dealing with threats, and Godzilla didn’t leave until Kong was no longer a threat)
@AzraelSoulHunter
@AzraelSoulHunter 3 года назад
Also Kong had an axe made of one of Godzilla's dorsal plates which implies that Kong's race were hunting down Godzillas and Godzilla remembered that and was most likely angry when he felt them. I mean one of those axes maybe came from one of Godzilla's family members. Kongs were fucked up. It seems like millions of years ago they started to evolve and build their own civilization much like humans and just like humans started to hunt other Kaijus for resources and sport. And now in GvK Godzilla saw that Kong was different from them and his growing up in isolation made him a good person. Godzilla was basically angry over Kong wielding a weapon made from one of his kind and who can blame him?

**Spoilers** Kong, apparently was one of the few of his kind to reach the surface. Cave paintings show a previous encounter between Godzilla and Kong. The resolution of that conflict resulted in Kong being confined to the island, but Godzilla knew he belonged in the Hollow Earth. Most likely why the first confrontation occurred. Godzilla is in hunting mode when Kong charges the axe in the throne room, which seems to be made from one of Godzilla's dorsal fins. To Godzilla that reads as an alpha, that's when he makes a hole to the Hollow Earth (bypassing the sea, the magma, and that trippy 80's hyper space portal they all had to go through). There is no reason for Godzilla to kill Kong, because the second fight happens when Kong is enraged and goes back to the surface. Godzilla did an oops by blasting down into Kong's territory, provoking an unnecessary fight. What 'Filmento' refers to as the Martha moment is nothing more than, Godzilla showing mercy, realizing that Kong is not the target, and having a "go back where you belong" kind of moment. Kong goes through a gamma of emotions throughout the movie. From the desperation of confinement, to the resignation of going into the Hollow Earth. Then some joy when he found home, and the sad realization that he was the last one. Immediately followed by the rage of having his home attacked. Godzilla starts with the rage of sensing Monster Zero once again. At first we don't know that, but once we get that information, Godzilla's purpose becomes clear, hunt and kill Monster Zero. Kong is just in the way, an unwanted distraction. In the final confrontation Kong has two reasons to join the fight: 1) Godzilla showed mercy, so he settles the debt. 2) Only he can kill Godzilla to "claim the title". At the end Kong realizes things were not the way he thought. There is some character growth right there, Kong shows he is not so stubborn and agrees to a truce. ----- All-in-all, drilling a hole to the Hollow Earth with atomic breath is as metal as can be. I say that's the winner.

Kong was just an annoyance to Godzilla. The whole movie Godzilla is looking for Ghidorah because Ghidorah's brainwaves were used to pilot MechaG. So when he beats Kong, he continues his search of Ghidorah/MechaG because that's his ultimate goal. So no, the movie did not fail the "Martha" test

I wouldn’t consider the ending a “martha” moment, since it was stated at the beginning of the movie that godzilla could sense the presence of mechagodzilla. So my point is that he sensed mechagodzilla’s awakening and automatically figured out that the new alpha threat was mechagodzilla and he probably even assumed that he would need a hand to defeat it, which again explains godzillas attack at the beginning of the movie.

It's a great subversion for Kong to lose, since it's Godzilla who has the higher motive for fighting him. Both Godzilla and Kong have been portrayed not really as brainless animals, and you have , more in their expression. What everyone seems to forget is.... They where using Ghidorah Brain waves for mechagodzilla. Remember the psychic relationship established between godzilla and mothra? But there was a clear winner. Kong was defeated. Godzilla’s true goal was to stop mechagodzilla but Kong was in the way. If Godzilla really wanted to end Kong he would have attacked skull island himself long ago. Godzilla did fulfill his goal and as a nod to Kong spared him in the end for his help. Edit: I should clarify that it wasn’t a Martha moment because killing Kong was NOT Godzilla’s goal. He just needed him out of his way to get his real goal -> Mechagodzilla. Kong was being protected by that special dome that stopped Godzilla from detecting him. No idea how they built it so fast, but otherwise there isn't any reason for them to keep Kong locked up in there, in an artificial environment in a safe uninhabited island for observation. Godzilla's true goal is fighting the space extinction threat. He's at a point where he knows to achieve this goal he has to strike a balance of harmony with humans and the other kaiju based on the KOTM events, and probably sees the potential of Kong in that future fight. He's known about Skull Island and Kong since he was a baby because G's old in this universe, and probably knows this individual Kong has some basic moral decency and helped to stop the Hollow Earth Skull Eater threat. That dome is really there to make sure that Kong doesn't run his mouth to give G a cause to be provoked, because he's relatively young and brash and wants to make his own stake. He also knows Kong is the last of his species and can't reproduce and is just a blip on G's immortal timeline, and really the human military can probably take him out pretty easy if they really wanted to. Kong's true goal is to be a King in a Free Kingdom and learn more about himself and his family/species, and not the genocide of the world's kaiju. To be clear, Godzilla isn't mad that humanity is building MechaGodzilla or a SuperMecha in general. He's pissed because they're building a GhidorahWeapon, and on TOP OF THAT they're doing something else weird with Kong that's making his GhidorahStomping mission go sideways time after time. As far as he knows they're gonna put Kong in a GhidorahWeapon powersuit or do some other wacky science stuff that's gonna go out of control, and Godzilla is probably still pretty sour after getting blasted with an Oxygen Destroyer in the last movie and getting sick of people not taking the space threat seriously enough that he's willing to kill/sacrifice millions to make a point if it means saving billions and all his kaiju buddies down the line.

10:45 That's because Godzilla was holding back up until Kong knocked him out. You can tell by his demeanor and even his fighting style afterwards that he was serious. For example, he preferred toying with Kong by spamming his atomic breath because it amused him. There is a scene where G literally laughs at Kong after shooting him in the back. After being knockef down, G gets up and decided play time is is over so he quickly beats Kong down and leaves him to die. Godzilla showed in both the ocean fight and the final fight with Kong what happens when he actually wants to beat Kong, he's much more aggressive and violent.

I disagree, if godzilla want to beat mecha, then why he attacks kong. I mean godzilla is an apex titan, so form what i think he shouldn't show his dominance in front of kong if his main goal is to beat mecha. If beating kong is his secondary objective, imho that kinda insult kong character, cause imho if godzilla put it that way, kong is not his worthy opponent. Mecha is cause it's his main objective. But that's perspective is wrong cause godzilla is all out against kong so i kinda confused lol. It's BvS all over again imho. I think what the problem is this goals (godzilla search for mecha and godzilla vs kong) is very strong that sometimes u get confused which goals are godzilla suppose to fulfill (i said this because i see the main character of this movie is godzilla cause he has a strong motivation, while kong is just kinda secondary character because he fight godzilla technically because he is used by the human to kick godzilla. Although he kinda main character when he's done with hollow earth stuff). Maybe the movie will be much better if the mecha is used in another movie, like a sequel when godzilla and kong are done and then the mecha come to take over. So, we have a clear goal, that is godzilla wants to beat kong cause kong doesn't wanna bow to godzilla cause godzilla is the apex titan and settle the score bout their ancient rivalry, and kong wants to beat godzilla cause kong bows to no one and want to settle the score bout their ancient rivalry. For the sequel, i get some idea that it's okay for them to team up. Maybe godzilla wants to team up with kong cause godzilla is not the apex titan anymore and mecha is using titans to hunt him down to silence him for good, and kong wants to team up cause mecha is using titans to destroy either skull island and or his ancestor's place in hollow earth, even as far as killing jia his human companion. Like i said, it's in the sequel cause kong wants to team up with godzilla is kinda weak, only because jia tells kong that godzilla is not his enemy and mecha is destroying everything, so it's kinda not personal and strong motivation for them to team up lol. What's good of the movie is that u have an excellent visuals and cinematography, even better than KOTM. Sometimes the visual and cinematoghrapy make me goosebumps lol. The humans are meh (except jia), the story are meh. Still this is a good movie, but it's kinda meh. Better than godzilla 2014, and worse than KOTM imho:).

There's a lot that went into this movie that stems not just from the monsterverse, but the overall Godzilla mythos. Godzilla has always had allies that were previously his enemies. Enemies that he defeated (or killed) that later came back as respected allies. The clearest examples are Mothra, Rodan and Anguirus. A greater part, however, was the Godzilla's goal in this movie. Kong wasn't the actual threat. He may have been under other circumstances, but the existence of Mechagodzilla was Godzilla's driving force, his goal, for the entire movie. That's where your conclusion falls short. Godzilla didn't kill Kong because G's goal was to eliminate Mechagodzilla/Ghidorah's brain. Kong helps and ultimately accomplishes that goal with G's help, and in dropping the ax after that help, Kong accepts that there is no fight between them and Godzilla respects Kongs strength and allows him to live without explicitly "bending the knee". They both know who the Alpha is. Kong was beaten, and as long as they both know that, there will be am accepted dynamic betweem them. Godzilla's the big boss, just as he always has been. That's how i see it.

@@jesse76thgames80 Just like Godzilla had to reapond to Kong challenging him in Hong Kong, Godzilla had to respond to a Titan, who hadn't yet submitted to him, leaving his assumed home. Even with his main goal of destroying the abomination to nature that APEX was creating, the balance of "his" world is still important. And he would have killed Kong then and there, but the actions of Team Kong (stopping the fleet) gave Godzilla a reason to not FINISH HIM! (Lol) The fleet stopping was equivalent to dropping the ax. Not a submission, but an acceptance of boths status. But again, this is just my perspective of the story's nuance. When you've been a Kaiju Fan as long as i have, you learn to accept the flaws you can't explain and appreciate the intent of the tale. I hope any future MonsterVerse films leave you more satisfied.

@@jesse76thgames80 Kaiju Knight summed most of it up pretty well, but I wanted to add that KotM showed us that the Titans have a lot of non-verbal communication, one of the things they can communicate is having an "alpha" status or mentality. Ghidorah obviously had it, and even Rodan did for the 30 seconds he spent tussling with Ghidorah- he was fighting for dominance (but decided he'd rather submit when defeated instead of fight to the death). Kong is, for all intents and purposes, an Alpha, and Godzilla could sense that, initially seeing Kong as a threat and acted accordingly. Part of why Godzilla ultimately decided not to end Kong for good was that he no longer considered Kong a threat to the natural order or his position as King (so long as he willingly gave up the axe). Kong was still an Alpha, but only interested in governing himself, which Godzilla was now OK with.

This is basically it. Filmento thinks it’s a random martha moment only because he’s comparing it to Muto and Ghidora but they were both “evil” and throwing the world out of balance (which is a big deal to Godzilla) But Godzilla knew Kong was good, he just needed to establish dominance, that doesn’t mean the opponent has to die or bow. So Godzilla beat him twice and in both cases walked away knowing he was still alive. And he would’ve fought him a third time if Kong didn’t yield.

While the Godzilla motivation of dethroning Kong is a wrong theory and Godzilla was the clear winner, Kong did not submit by dropping down his axe. Kong got his ass kicked when he stopped using it (see Godzilla getting on all fours and trying to give him a feet massage with his teeth) and I don’t think Kong wanted to keep fighting. The axe was his one big advantage and by relinquishing that he was either trying to make it a fair fight (he needed the axe for it to even be fair). Or he was giving up. You can see this when he drops the axe and then Godzilla roars, accepting his wishes. And on the aircraft carrier I’m pretty sure Godzilla just in general doesn’t like Titans, or humans, screwing around with his territory. @@ChrisPeteG No that logic doesn't make sense. As Filmento said, Godzilla doesn't just leave other alphas to die. He finishes them off himself. So why would Godzilla *"punish"* Kong by leaving him to die, and not *"punish"* Ghidorah or the MUTOs (since they also dared to challenge him)?
@ChrisPeteG
@ChrisPeteG 3 года назад
@@WebbedManiac Well, what Filmento says isn't fact. There is nothing that indicates that Godzilla is a tyrant who runs an exclusive "Kneel or die" policy. They say over and over in this franchise, Godzilla is about restoring balance. He executes Titans like the Mutos and Ghidorah who threaten balance and or seek to destroy Godzilla himself. On one hand, Godzilla's main motivation in this film was going after what he thought was Ghidorah. In the ocean, Kong didn't kneel...but they "played dead" but Godzilla and Kong had a face off...very clearly showing that Godzilla did not have a 'kneel or be murdered' policy. He had more of a 'Don't step out of line" policy. He was content that he put Kong in his place in the ocean, and he was content that he put him in his place in Hong Kong. Either way, Godzilla absolutely knew Kong had nothing left in Hong Kong, and quite possibly knew he was mortally wounded. Whether out of pity or malice, or simply a drive to get after "ghidorah", Godzilla did not deem it necessary to kill Kong. He obviously sees threats that are malicious like Muto and Ghidorah as IN NEED of extermination. The other Titans, if they don't kneel...he likely doesn't slap them around more than he needs to in order to show who is boss. Hell...the 'kneeling' thing from the end of the last movie was probably more of a one-time apology for following Ghidorah than it was the strict enactment of a new "policy". Godzilla only takes out rival alphas, that are trying to compete with him. As long as he gets the point across that HE is the alpha, he is shown to let bygones be bygones...as he does in the ocean.
@ChrisPeteG
@ChrisPeteG 3 года назад
@@WebbedManiac Basically...we are ASSUMING his policy is "kneel or be murdered" when it could just very well be "kneel or catch an ass whooping" Remember...Godzilla has not been portrayed as evil or tyrannical in the franchise up to this point. I think it makes perfect sense for Godzilla to spare Kong. Your point involving the MUTOS and Ghidorah don't take into account that one is a literal space virus that wants to make Earth uninhabitable, and the others are breeding machines that were going to spawn hundreds of other MUTOS. Like Godzilla, Kong is the last of his kind, he won't spontaneously spawn hundreds of Kongs like the MUTOS were going to do, and he wasn't a parasite trying to destroy all life on Earth. To me this is the same idea as when in KoTM we literally removed Godzilla's oxygen with the O2 destroyer, and yet he lets us live afterwards.
@TheBloodsuckerProxy

Also the MUTOS are parasitic, it's shown that they reproduce by laying their eggs in the bodies of Godzilla's species. Killing them is a matter of self preservation. Also, the Kaiju/Titans are somewhat sapient in this continuity and others. So even though Kong and Godzilla never say a word, they still have the potential to convey character traits, personality, motifs, development, etc. through their behaviors and actions. I might compare them a little to Spear and Fang in Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Primal”. Therefore, when certain moviegoers care most about the monsters, it is sometimes not just because the monsters provide the spectacle. Sometimes, the monsters themselves are meant to be the main protagonists as well. This makes me wonder if, among the detractors stating “I did not find the human characters interesting and so the whole narrative felt devoid of character development”, there is a fraction of them who are simply overlooking that aspect of many Godzilla films.

He is the entire reason Godzilla even attacks the humans to begin with, which leads the humans to bring Kong off of Skull island, pushing the conflict between the two titans into motion. And may I also add that the monsters we've seen Godzilla kill in the past where threats against the world, where Kong is more of a nuisance that popped up while he was initially aiming for the destruction of his old nemesis given a new body by arrogant humans. so actually, when you really think about it, beating Kong wasn't actually what Godzilla cared most about in this movie. if that's a bad thing or not, you decide...

Also, Kong didn't represent a real threat to humanity, and he was also a benevolent titan, he only needed to prove himself as superior, because a REAL king doesn't kill or let blame fall on the innocents, a real king protects and cares for his kingdom. A REAL KING is VALANCE. Although, I would have added a scene of Kong submitting or feeling like resisting was totally in vain.

But the problem here is that they don't care. Godzilla in the previous film was literally a benevolent Alpha creature who wanted no fight with anyone except Ghidorah. In this film, since KOTM, he's defeated/killed all other Titans except Kong. The difference between Godzilla in the previous film and this one is literally night and day. KOTM was a benevolent Alpha and protector. Godzilla vs Kong is a bully/murderer because reasons that are never even touched upon. That difference and disregard for what came before, and the horrendous misrepresentation of Godzilla as a creature that will go out of his way to look for a fight because "RIVAL" (which they don't even show us outside of the axe and spend the rest of the film just talking about which is "Tell, Don't Show" and very poor storytelling) is nothing short of egregious and disrespectful.
@fm_0523
@fm_0523 3 года назад
@@TWDub you are terribly wrong. Godzilla's motivations are not what you say. He wants to finds the remnants of Gidorah and destroy them, as an Alpha would do. Basically, everything that happens in this movie is Apex's fault. First they start using Gidorah's brain because of their obsession of killing Godzilla, then when Godzilla rightfully gets angry at them for trying to kill him, they add insult to the injury by bringing Kong in his territory. The true villain of the story are humans. Godzilla isn't a bully who wants to kill all the other titans, he is the same benevolent alpha creature we saw in KOTM, only that because of those stupid humans he was brought out of balance. He is like The'fiti that turns into Te'kha in Moana. And at the end, when Gidorah is finally defeated and the humans who tried to kill him are dead, he returns in his balance and doesn't try to kill Kong, acknowledging him as as his equal.
@xenobased3896
@xenobased3896 3 года назад
Godzilla’s ultimate goal wasn’t just to subjugate other Alphas. As far as he was concerned, he had already established his dominance in the fight back on the ocean. His goal was to find and destroy Mechagodzilla, who was giving off insane Ghidorah vibes and, as we know from the previous movie, he has a genuine visceral hatred for Ghidorah. Kong just got in the way in round 2, Godzilla had stopped actively seeking him out. The ‘Martha’ scene didn’t result in Godzilla killing Kong because Killing Kong was not Godzilla’s goal. He was after what was left of Ghidorah.

@thegrimreaper144
@thegrimreaper144 3 года назад
@@Altherot Again, Godzilla's main objective was to get rid of Kong in that fight. The people that were killed in the first fight were just in the way. He killed the pilots of the jet fighters flying around him because they were annoying him. Again, they were in the way to his true objective. Also, Godzilla isn't a protector of humanity, as some are led to believe. Rather, he's the protector of the PLANET, making sure that nature is in balance. And I don't really think he cares all that much about humanity to be honest, nor if their innocent or not. As cliche as this sounds, think of yourself as Godzilla and the humans as ants. You could have beef with another human and their would be ants littered the floor. Whether they have something to do with the conflict or not, you wouldn't really care if you crushed a few under your feet. At least that is just how I see it.
