Hi All, this one I mislabeled. Even though the Calathea is now Goeppertia in this instance, I had the species as "latifolia" ... but it appears to be "insignis". My bad. Do not pay heed to the "Emily Dickinson slant rhyme" in the description above. Haha. As I shared in an earlier episode.. (or did I share on Instagram...????) - I'm going to do a round-up of updates on any mislabels or new name changes of the 365s AFTER they're done, because I think that will be easier. Thanks always for watching!
I'm not an expert by any means, but my research suggests it may actually be correctly named Goeppertia Lancifolia. Please tell me if I am wrong, just thought I'd throw another suggestion out there in case it is actually correct, for your records and mine.
After I memorized Calathea lancifolia, I learned of the change in genus! I haven't learned the new name. I have had no success with prayer plants or Calatheas, but my rattlesnake plant has thrived for about 18 months in my bathroom, about 3' from the south facing window. I mist it with rain water or dehumidifier water.
The constant changing of plant scientific names is making my head spin, man! Aside from that...I love my rattlesnake! It always is spitting out new leaves and it’s my easiest Calathea.
This may be a common prayer plant, but it's my favorite plant in my collection. I love it so much, I even have it tattooed on me. Wonderful plant that shows you as much love and you give it.
I recently acquired a rattlesnake plant as well as my husband bought me a calathea zebrina. I collect rainwater for them. 😂 I use a small oil diffuser with just rainwater to add humidity. The rattlesnake came looking a bit rough but hope she will come around soon. I’m super excited. Thanks for the video!
I keep my prayer plants in my bathroom where we shower. Medium light and high humidity. The colours of these plants are fabulous under the right conditions
I have two calatheas and this is by far the easiest. The other day I went in the room and jumped once the leaves made a noise from moving. Realized it was the plant. 😎
Oh my goodness, the changing of plant scientific names is making me crazy, I guess I will stick to it's common name of rattlesnake, she is one of my easier plants to grow, or at least where I have her she is happy and growing well, lots of new growth, so for now I'm happy I can make her happy. Thank you again Summer, I really love this series, I learn something new each day about some of the plants I have and about some plants that I wish I could find.
You are right about the humidity requirements. I live in the high plains of Mexico where the humidity typically hovers close to single digits. I bought one of these from a local greenhouse and it just slowly died over about 6 months. I'm sure it was due to the lack of humidity and possibly from the high mineral content of the water here. I love you videos, keep them coming.
I had no idea this was in the same family as the prayer plant and was getting so annoyed with it and thought it was being finicky when sometimes it would be flat and other times it would be up! I'm over here telling my prayer plant how great it is not realizing the rattlesnake plant has been doing the SAME thing. Thank you for this video!
This is the plant that kicked off my plants addiction. I saw one of these at a local nursery, only it wasn't a baby - it was gigantic, almost a meter tall, and so gorgeous I had to take it home that very day! Cost me like $70 including a big white porcelain pot (I think it's porcelain?? I'm not sure actually...) Anyway, well worth it and is loving it's spot in the middle of my hallway. 😊❤️ Such a beautiful beast!
The tip on filtered water is GREAT!! I have one of these and we got it a bit beat up already and we have not been able to bring it back to happiness. I've been giving it tap water, so hopefully the switch to filtered will brighten it up a bit. Thank you!!
It's a rattle snake and that's all I can give, lol. A new leaf recently got really tall and touched the grow lights and it bleached it out on both side of the leaf. So I have to raise the shelf. It's grouped with other calatheas on a big peeble tray. It stays beat up but keep coming back for me. She wants to live. Prayer plants are prone to spider mites. That's most all humidity loving plants if they get too dry.
Just in time! I just unloaded my new Rattlesnake. Bought it from the local Mennonite greenhouse and it’s big and full. bargain! Planning to use water from my 90 gal planted angel tank to fertilize and see what happens. My water goes in hard, bypassing the softener, but the wood in the tank softens it. Good experiment!
Sweet Summer; Love your channel. I am wondering why you don't place your "Rattle Snake" Calathea into a nice "self watering pot"? Calathea's thrive in those type of pots. I own several Calatheas and they all LOVE the self watering method. Try it.
When I repotted mine I was shocked to see how tuberous the roots are. It had loads of large nodules that looked like they would help store water a bit better than other prayer plants. Mine does have a few crispy edges here and there, but I've accidentally let it go much drier than I meant to and it seemed no worse for wear. It has certainly been the most forgiving of my prayer plants/calathea! I've also been surprised to find that I've gradually "trained" it to do really well in front of an east facing window that does get about 2 hours of direct early morning light. The plant's growth has really exploded since I put her in that window, but I was careful to transition her there slowly from her previous shady spot.
I think you’re brilliant, I’ve tried leaving water for 24 hours with these plants but they don’t seem to do well with it. Best bet is distilled water 💕
Currently my four calatheas live in my bathroom, on a vertical shower pole. They love it by my window. I use on distilled water and also use a humidifier when I dont use the shower.
Hi dear ......oakes! We all know that tropical leaves don't need hot sun but growth requires a lot of moisture . After all, no one successful houseplants grower talks about ph of soil & water. It's also very important to grow healthy & beautiful houseplants!!!!
This plant does so good for me. It did die back a little because I forgot about it. I changed out the soil like 6 months ago so i have to water it more often than I did with the soil i got it in💖
Wow, this is so unique and absolutely stunning!!! I wish I could find these around my area here in Central Florida, we get so much tropical weather here so I'm sure it would do Great! Thanks for sharing this beauty with us!! I'll have to write this one in the books for sure!!😍
I just bought a baby Calathea rattlesnake 😃 correct me if I’m wrong but I heard Calatheas like to be together. If so I’ll be putting her next to me Calathea Medallion
Hi there, i live in Ontario.I have that rattle snake plant and I use tap water that I leave in a jug for 24 hours before I use it. My plant do have a beautiful deep purple underneath but I do have crisping on the ends of every leaf. I use cactus soil mixed with perlite. It’s not in bright light either so can you please tell me what I am doing wrong. I love this plant and want to save it. Love watching your videos
Awesome tips. I have had one for about a year and it has been challenging. I was able to put it outside this summer and it was loving life. Nervous to bring it back it. I am going to try it in my bathroom this year and see how it likes it there. Keep up the great content Summer!! #plantykindnessproject
Hi, I just got my Rattlesnake plant. It has a new leaf coming in that looks nothing like the rest of them. It's a very light green, almost white with a white stem. What do new leaves on this plant look like? I'm wondering if a hitchhiker got in the pot. Thanks
Hi Summer! Love your videos and will soon sign up for your master class. My question to you…. Is filtered tap water good for the prayer plants or any plant?
Thanks for the video! My Goepertia is kind of in between of happines and a little bit "down". I mean, not completely happy, but not at all depressed. Would you recommend to mist the leaves to keep her up?
Anyone able to tell me where I can find pots this shape? I've been looking for something deeper but not so wide for some of my plants but haven't had any luck, thanks!
i have two questions, will you make a video on your oeceoclades, and what do you think of unheard of houseplants that are usually thought of as outside groundcovers (such as lamium maculatum or cymbalaria muralis or aequitriloba to name my favourites)
My lancifolia has tiny brown spots on the leaves, it has good humidity, is misted with distilled water & watered with distilled water. It is treated exactly the same as my makoyana except the makoyana is doing well. Apart from the brown spots the lancifolia looks relatively healthy. I can only think that although it's in indirect light it might be too bright?
When do they need repotting. My plant is a lot more full than the one on the video and as much as it looks really healthy, it is really full so I think it needs replanting or dividing.
I've been waiting to see this guy featured. Mine is doing just okay. I'm a new plant mom and I have mine in my spare bedroom which is also the turtle tank room. I have it next to the tank and the plant gets a little bit of the turtle's uva/Uvb bulb light for about 8 hours a day and medium to low indirect sunlight when the window is open. But I have had a lot of browning and two leaves dried up and died about a month apart. I also have a bad feeling I repotted it into too big of a pot. Do you have any advice for those of us experiencing crispy tips or brown spots?
funny my rattlesnake is the least fussy of my prayer plants i'd have to say, i have had my zebrina on the brink of death multiple times and had them down to just rhizomes that i divided up and kept the only live one going, which is now either looking good or in the brink again *sigh*
Any idea why my new leaves are a lighter shade of green than the older leaves? I’ve had my plants for about a month now. I water them with distilled water and they are close to my bathroom. They appear to be happy and both are producing new leaves. The leaves are just lighter in color.
I have three calatheas and this one is struggling :( compared to my white fusion and medallion. I’m not going to give up on it! Will try distilled water next.
We have chlorinated water in san francisco, and I think it's causing my prayer plant to get brown edges. can anyone recommend a method of de-chlorinating my water? I'm thinking of buying tap water conditioner (used for fish tanks) just for my plant, as I don't really have any interest in buying a water filter since our water is good enough for drinking straight from the tap. Thx
juStKreaTiv try bonide systemic houseplant insecticide if you’re in the us. I’ve tried everything else and it was the only thing that worked but you will have to reapply every two or three months to prevent recurring infestations
most of the plants belonging to Maranta family grows in spite of roots are pot bound (root bound?). If you are living in a place with high humidity it thrives well... good luck '
If anyone is familiar with this plant's care, I could use some advice. I have one of these in my palidarium. It receives a good amount of light (maybe to much?), the palidarium has a waterfall so the setup stays crazy moist. I treat my water before putting it into the palidarium, I have crested gecko so I need to removed the chlorine and heavy metals from the water anyways. I'm loosing leaves, getting browning. and have noticed any new growth in months.. Any help would be appricated.
I may dislike the recent reclassifications but I can see the reasoning behind it. Well not in this case! I think someone spiked the punch bowl at that taxonomist meeting🍹😏 🌱
I was always under the impression that calatheas needed to be pretty moist all the time but I've noticed that when I let mine dry out a little more (not bone dry but at least 75% dry) and then bottom water, they are much healthier. This is a new discovery so I'm not sure if it's coincidence or actually working for the better. When do you water your Calatheas? How dry do you let the soil get? Please anyone that has experience or knowledge about this, chime in! I love my rattlesnake and makoyana and would like to keep them alive...lol
@@TamieLe put planter in a bowl a tub a sink - anything that can hold a bit of water and the planter can fit in with room to spare. fill vessle with about half an inch of water and the water will be absorbed slowly and evenly. Allow the soil to get moist until about an inch or so of soil is left dry on top. Helps keep fungus gnats away too as they need wet top soil to lay eggs.
I bought my rattlesnake plant like maybe 3 weeks ago but the moisture meter shows it’s still wet so I guess not time to water I keep it in my shower & my ceiling light is a full spectrum grow light Any suggestions?
grow lights usually need to be within close proximity of the plants and need around 8 hrs a day, so if its just the ceiling light and their are no windows it wont really be doing much growing. with 3 weeks being longer than i've ever left a houseplant without watering maybe consider changing to a faster draining soil as it sounds like it could rot if the water is remaining for so long, but of course ensure the lighting isn't an issue first.
My Lancifolia doesn’t lower its leaves in the morning like the one in this video. Its just a straight standing up plant. Why is that? Am i doing something wrong? Or do I have a different cultivar?
I have this one at home and it´s one of my favorites! But I must say it´s really annoying that they are changing the name ☹️ Just when I learned all my Calatheas names they´re not even Calatheas anymore.
These plants don't do well in dry environments. Unless you live in a humid part of the world, or you are prepared to humidify your plant room, you probably should pass on this one...that goes for all "Calathea" plants...
The officially name of most of the plants came from Latin language and you pronounce the name in a bad way. It pronounce like this Calathea Lancifolia = Kalatéia Lanchifolia .... and it’s mean calathea spear leave
This plant really isn't in the best condition.... Mine looks like a champ. Idk why ya'll have trouble keeping this one alive its the easiest Calathea to have
