I have taught base 8 counting and today I used base 3 counting. I use tennis balls and tennis ball cans as model. So the ones place is "single balls" and then 3 balls makes one "can" and then I make 3 cans into a 3 "pack" and then three 3-packs is a box etc. I then model and "count" (write) the numbers from 0 to 21ish using base 3 and showing their equivalent in base 10. In addition to helping students with place value this also allows them to look for pattens. What I really like about this video is that it created "exponents" for the different "place" values that we came up with. With "help" the students discovered the pattern of 1 then 3 then 9 then 27 then 81. Each time place value growing by a factor of 3. This is something I came up with on my own and it's nice to see that there is actually lessons and thought behind it besides mine. Thank you!

When I solved this problem my first step was also to write the cards as the number 10101. It is really helpful to turn the numbers into exponents and write them as 3 to zero power and so on. I didn't realize that to go back to base 10 we just needed to add the digits we got from base 3.
