I heard this on the radio in California in 79. After I moved back to MS, I got a job as a courier. They sent me to Laurel once. I said "That dirty, stinking town?" They didn't get it =p.
Randall Gould Yeah I know what he meant,. It’s just too funny that Delaware has a town called Laurel that fits the description perfectly.. Delaware is such a small state that we only have one zip code for the entire state, and we only have three counties. There isn’t one place in the entire county that is more then 30 miles from the Beech and Laurel is only 15 miles but is still a run down crap hole of a town, Maybe if we rename the downs more kids wii some
Fell in love with Laurel first time i heard it. I was 18. And i requested it on the radio every night. I love this song ..ill qlways love it. I qlso live" It Isnt Gonna Be That Way".. beautiful..i can really feel everything im supposed to feel. I love his music.
I have listened to Steve for decades and know him a little. Seen him many times all over the country but this is my fave song. I have never been to Laurel.
Omg I cannot pick a favourite. I love this, grand Central station... and every single song... I went to a few gigs in Glasgow, Scotland... omg I love you @steve since way back 💘💘
My brother has been a fan since I was a little kid - I used to listen to this song all the time 30 years ago - We are going to see him tonight in a tiny venue in Ashland, Virginia - I can't wait - Thanks Steve for rockin' for all these years -
Loved this gentleman's music for over 30 years and I had the great honour of finally getting to see him at a very small venue called The Maze in Nottingham England late last year.Believe me it was so worth the wait and I send Steve all my thanks for a memorable night. God bless ya!
Got to see him live at Bush Hall , Shepherds Bush , London 2007 I think. Great gig in a small venue , still love his music. Had Alive On Arrival in the late 70's , one of my wife's favourite albums too
I agree with Beefy 142 .. Sreve Forbert ,,, is a grat singer / songwriter ,...love all his albums ...never seen him live ... someday in Scotland . thanks for posting ..mikeja
@@donmcallister3745 Totally agree...40 years in music and still doing what he loves to do and touring all over the country. Most of the new artists will be long forgotten in 40 years.
Mostly the people I asked if they ever have heard him,and only 1 out of 50,have it saddens me that so many people mist the artist that he is ,Alive in Arrival is a master piece,it gave me so much pleasure, thanks so much Steve.
Ha, I'm originally from Laurel. It does stink at times, with the paper mill and chicken processing plants there. It is 50 miles South of Meridian, where Forbert grew up. Great song though.
@@fenderstratguy Laurel is known for much more than that song. Lance Bass, Leontyne Price, Tom Lester (Eb from Green Acres), Ralph Boston and several other professional athletes. Hotspot for the Klan in the 50's and 60's. It is a dirty little town
Saw Steve at The Stephen Talkhouse in East Hampton, NY... about a 50-seat venue (really!). Great show all these years later. He was fantastic! Hang in there, Steve. Don't change or sell out for anyone!
Steve Forbert was the best in the late seventies and now hearing him 30 plus years later the music is just as fantastic!!!! When are you out west Steve?
Me too. Well said. I loved this guy's music in the 80's and I've just rediscovered him. Great lyrics, melodies and soul. My kind of rock 'n' roll. Having said that, comparisons will always be contentious; maybe it's best to have co-existing brilliance without the subjective opinions of what affects us the most joyfully. All I know is, Steve Forbert just made this old rocker get out his air guitar for the first time in years!
Steve is one of the best live acts anywhere, he sounds great and reacts well to the audience. I can't wait to see him in BayShore LI this May. I hope Paul is with him
I like seeing the latter-day Steve. He's more a musician, less mugging, doesn't seem as eager to grab the spotlight. Knowing his backstory, I am grateful for his recovery. As everybody knows, you sell your work much better when you're not splitting your pants trying to.
I attended RH Watkins HS. Moved away in 1971. Yeah, Laurel had a smell (Masonite mill and plant), but it wasn't stinking or dirty.... no matter, this is just about my favorite song from that time 1980?
Steve will be in Woodbridge, NJ on Oct 7th, 2009 in an intimate 250 seat church on main Street. The series in :Music On main Street" and is found @ WoodbridgeArtsNJ
,""she's in love and loves and loves a funny state of mind""I am a fool for loving my man too this song speak s to me I adore him since jackrabbit slim a true artist
@alanf999 I saw him solo in Portland, Maine a short while back. It was a small venue but it was also one of my best music experiences. Without a doubt, he is one of my favorite musicians!
Thank you- Laurel located in the timber belt of Mississippi, paper mills were common in the area and so was the smell and smoke. Two more good songs from a great first album- "Grand Central Station" "Tonight I Feel So Far Away from Home"
@harrasin I just saw him solo myself. Also a small venue, also one of my best music experiences (perhaps THE best)! What a wonderful musician, and also a warm and friendly guy!
Actually Laurel is a really nice. Nice art museum there. I used to live in Meridian and it is a hard assed town. They aren't giving away anything in Meridian. I always thought of Laurel as female and Meridian as male.
When this album came out, he was the next 'new Dylan'. I thought I was so cool to be the only person I knew with this album, until this song got popular.
I just noticed there is a Wikipedia entry for Laurel, Mississippi. Now I would not expect them to include the notion that it is a dirty stinking town, but they also have an entry for notable people from Laurel, and Steve Forbert is missing. Is there anyone reading this with Wikipedia powers that can right this wrong perhaps?
Just saw him last night, doing his 35 yr anniversary tour - playing all of his Alive On Arrival album. Such a great song writer, and a very nice person. Check out my video(s) of him from his show. Thanks for posting your videos.
