And No - You've not read the title wrong!
So last week - through a peculiar set of circumstances, I took on the company car lease for this Tesla Model Y ⚡️⚡️
Having previously driven a Model 3 and Model X - I had a blasé attitude to what I could expect, but not all has been as I had initially imagined!
Early days - so more to come not he car - is it a Porsche replacement - ABSOLUTELY NOT - Will it be used heavily for the next 2 years - yes it will. Join me on the first part of the journey!

Left stalk: push forward and you get a mini light menu popup in the bottom left. Push the washer/wiper button half way and a mini wiper menu pops up.

Ride is firm because you are using 20” tires. Use the 19” and there is more tire to absorb bumps.

I got mine with the 19" wheels - I tested a performance and a long range and could tell the difference in ride quality. I've had it for over a year and just over 10k miles. Ride quality was still better than what I had before (Corolla) but not a luxury floater for sure - I think it should be an option at that level. I use a lot of the voice commands when driving but I've also memorized the location of the key things I might need to change. I wish it had a HUD instead of having everything on the main(only) display. I also wish CarPlay was an option but the info-tainment is probably the best from a car company ever. If you have access to charging at home, it's pretty sweet waking up everyday with a nearly "full tank" instead of taking time out of my week to fill up. The real killer feature of Teslas is their supercharging network - which in the States - there is no equal. I take it on road trips every few months, so this has come in super handy - otherwise, I'd be driving my minivan which is not easy on the wallet when traveling.

I'm nowhere near in a position to get a Tesla but I hope to be in the next year once I sort my life out 😅 I'm going to be using this time to follow people like you and listen to your perspective as it evolves then make a decision once I'm actually in a position to get one. I test drove the performance version on Friday and thought the ride was fine, better than my BMW 330E. Seats were very comfy. If you want SUV comfy I guess you’d go Audi Etron or Hyundai

From what I understand (and the comments confirm below) the newer cars have improved suspension - so hopefully that’s that issue fixed 👌

The Model Y is the safest (crash test) car you can buy. It is faster, quieter, safer and more relaxing than a 911. The higher seating position also makes for a safer drive. Other EV's have more switches and are less minimalistic than a Tesla. Tesla have modified the suspension on the Model Y, so they do listen.

Totally agree on the ride. New one is better had a MY performance for a day (same ride) and a long range one for the weekend (better but still too firm for an SUV). Also needs a heads up display and parking sensors!! The screen is great when you aren’t moving…… Went IX in the end. Drive train nowhere near as efficient as Tesla but in my opinion a much better car of this size and class plus I have a button for my fog lights 😉

I’m also in Birmingham, also driving a 71 plate Long range model y. I’m torn. it’s quick, cheap to run and looks good but the same issues with ride quality and the fact the car can be dangerous at times without the screen in front of you or buttons. Currently looking at a 2022 BMW X5 45e to replace it. My second car is a model 3 performance which is due back so also looking at a bmw i4 to replace that. Do you regret getting rid of your x5?

Great review, Im glad that you didn't praise them on the things most people complain about. Ive heard the suspension is really rough you would think for that price tag them would have added air suspension or the ability to adjust it like most luxury vehicles do. Tesla dropped the ball on that and they need to improve that I hear from my older patients that it is rough on their backs and they need to get realignments and stuff. Now they are older to be fair but to have a younger patient saying the same thing that isn't good. Volvo has the right idea with their seat along with Mercedes and BMW and Audi. I think if I was stuck with a car for two years I would have looked into seeing if I could get a Audi or Mercedes. At least you have air suspension and it is adjustable and the right is still fun. Minus the instant torque that Tesla has to offer. Overall I like the review that you made and I think you did a great job making this video. Keep up the great work!!!

Also sounds to me like what you wanted was an Audi with all its buttons and wallowy suspension etc etc however to get one to the same spec as the MYP would have cost £25k more and you a) wouldn't have the performance b) be generally stuck with the appalling charging network c) been significantly down on real-world range and d) stuck with archaic software/systems (software update you say Sir, certainly, leave your car with us for a week and we'll try to do that for you without bricking it...)

Drove a Model Y rear wheel drive single motor this morning. It had a white interior, but I wouldn't bother if just two in the front as you can't see it when seated. Ride was good enough, as they've been softened it a bit recently. The MG5 is better, but the latest MY is not uncomfortable. Prefer the looks of the M3 (MY is ugly from front, but ok side and rear, and looks better in darker colours) and it feels more planted on the road - it's a sports car whereas the MY has more space. I don't know whether to choose a MY or M3.
@CarMadDad
@CarMadDad Год назад
Cheers for the thoughts Chris - tough one but the e charging network with Tesla would seal the deal for me 👌

@CarMadDad

Yeah lii I be the iX chap. I didn’t choose the Tesla (explained in video) however would consider them seriously as the charging network is top notch. Think the iX is a better car so depends what you need most I guess

Ah this is the question I was also going to ask. Sat in the back of a Model Y before the new suspension in Amsterdam as a taxi, I couldn't wait to get out. As you say the ride ain't good at all. Test drove a new Model Y LR about a month ago in UK and ride was so much better. Night and day difference with the new comfort suspension if you ask me. Not an S class but for springs and an SUV was fine. Model 3 Performance on comfort suspension was nicer still than Model Y LR but SUV's tend not to match a good saloon for comfort so to be expected.
@spsmith45
@spsmith45 Год назад
We test drove a Model Y long range on 19 inch rims in Leeds. I was expecting something way too harsh and it was actually okay, even on some patchier roads. It bugged me less than a test drive in the Nissan Ariya, also on the firm side imo. The softestvtest drives we did were ID4/5 and Ioniq 5. Better judged, though less exciting.
@FastLaneJB
@FastLaneJB Год назад
@@spsmith45 Yes the ride now is fine since they added the "comfort" suspension as Elon called it. Was later half of 2022. Model Y's before that ride pretty bad.
@NotTheRest
@NotTheRest Год назад
So you're saying that on UK, people are allowed to use fog lights within city limits? I don't believe it's the case in Europe, as they are only allowed outside city limits and with visibility below 50m. And rightfully so as it's really annoying to be suck on traffic behind an asshole with rear fogs on...
@CarMadDad
@CarMadDad Год назад
That’s not what I’m saying no. I used the example of the day prior when I needed to use my fog lights and visibility was well below 50m that when I needed to turn them on I struggled to do so 👍
