My son was a wild land firefighter for several years. There are only so many firefighters for thousands upon thousands of acres of land that is burning. The crews are few and far between. Part of that reason is they work 24 hour sifts some times, and they have to sleep some time. They can't be on the fire all the time. My son finally quit because in the fall everyone gets laid off and you can't survive on unemployment checks. He tried going up the ladder for a better job but those jobs only come up when someone retires. So we are very lucky to have those firefighters that continue to fight the fires. They are all hero's and they deserve more than they get.
I am so thankful for Joshua Alexander for recommending you. I am loving this series so much that in fact I think once it comes to an end I will go back and watch if from the start as a movie night. Thank you.
You wanted adventure, and you got it bigtime! Fear of bushfires and running out of petrol, scary and fascinating stuff😲. I'm 12 months late, but better late than never, thanks to Alex and Josh 🥰. Geez, I love you Canadians 🤗🇦🇺
Yikes! I hate driving through burnt-out forest, but I can't imagine doing so while patches of it are still actively on fire and the car has been on empty for miles. 😮 You two seemed remarkably calm about it all, but sensible, capable men probably don't freak out all that often. Ryan has a lovely, soothing voice that could ward off most panic attacks. When I drove from NB to my new home in AB, I had to pass through a lot of burned areas in northern ON, and gas stations were few and frequently closed there too. My anxiety was maxed out the whole way across that never-ending province. Having survived that long solo drive, I would love to do it again someday when I have the time to enjoy the countryside more.
I was so excited, when I just saw this new episode only hours after it has been uploaded. Then I watched it and was amazed. I genuinely thought, after the last episode, this couldn't get any more exciting. How wrong I was. :) Nice surprise. - I love the whole series and this episode is a cherry on top. I can't wait to watch the next one.
What a great comment Katharina, I really appreciate your kind words. I honestly wasn't sure what anyone would think of this episode, especially after the bus episode. Glad to hear you liked it!!
Is it so much darker because of the smoke....OMG that is not the best place to be low on gas, you have me squirming in my seat all the time Ryan. That is crazy wicked being thick in the fire and smoke. That was a cool encounter with the poor wolf fleeing the fire. Oh the suspense is killing me I can’t wait....Love your adventures, thanks for sharing with us.
So many epic memories from these two weeks! That was one looooong day of driving... and not driving. haha I am loving how you edit and tell these stories Ryan. It's so captivating, exciting and inspiring. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!! Once the series is over, I'm going to watch each episode again back to back. A perfect re-telling of the 2019 adventure of Going North. Well done my friend.
Thanks Justin! I will probably do the same, maybe we should watch them together, it will be cool to reminisce about the trip. It truly was epic! I still have to pinch myself sometimes, I can't believe what we accomplished in 11 days! I also wish we could do it all over again it was amazing.
After reading the two books I was fascinated to see where he was and the bus etc. Being in New Zealand I never thought I would ever find out. Thank you so much for taking us on this awesome, enlightening journey.
And what is so very crucial and important to our human survival.. is being able to laugh and have faith in the positive even when it's scary. Humor has a way of turning you into a magnet for positive energy! That's what I believe! And I'm sticking to it! I'm in the middle of this video right now and I'm going to continue to watch as I know it ends up well. L o v i n ' you guys!:-)
This totally reminded me of in 2003 I was driving around Tasmania in an old beat up 80's toyota I think it was, in the middle of nowhere running out of petrol. I wasn't going to make it to the next town, somehow I found out about this 1 little petrol pump off the beaten track, I made it there and found a sign saying cash only and they would be back soon - I think they had gone to put a bush fire out or something. Somebody did turn up eventually but I only had $10 on me.. luckily it bought me enough petrol to get me to the next town! Things like this are what turn trips into adventures :)
Love the episode! I had this sick feeling when you were running out of gas AND in the middle of a fire!! The fire was is so destructive and can turn in a second, I was on the edge of my seat! Then you say to watch the white line....I watched so intensely and suddenly yell it's a moose, NO, it's a BEAR, LOOK OUT!! My husband comes running in to see what the heck is wrong with me. Epic episode, thank you!!
Your adventures remind me of when we were first married in the seventies. We had an Austin A 40. It had a gear cable that needed replacing. We were moving from south island New Zealand to north island with year old daughter. Could only get first and second gear or third and fourth gear at a time. What an adventure . Mostly in 3/4 gear but stopping near top of hills to change up gears. Old car, those days had to get part from wreckers.
We took it all in a stride! I was never really scared or anything like that, just worried if we would have been stuck there on the side of the road breathing in that thick smoke for too long. And a wolf nearby to boot ha ha!!
Noooooo! I held my breath for the entire video (well, it felt like it) waiting for you to get to the gas station, and now I have to wait for the next episode!!! Reminded me of my honeymoon when we were in a similar situation.
Thanks Roy, I do want to take at least a day trip in the spring in the old Meteor. Miss driving it, too much snow right now. I hope things are looking up for your Pontiac!
I don't know why but I thought the last one was the last one. . However I was so happy when your notice came up. Talk about slow motion white Knuckle Ride. Look forward to the next episode boys. . Thanks
A very tense drive, guys! I kept thinking of the forest fire in Bambi, then the wolf comes into scene... You guys paid that wolf, right? I kept thinking the wolf would be in the drivers seat by the time Ryan packed up the trunk... Oh F! As a wiseman once said, "runnin on empty, I don't know when that road turned into the road I'm on" Jackson Browne
Wao I thought the last one was the last :-), I know the feeling of driving on empty the firts time was scary bcause it happen on the fwy and on up hill, I'm glad you guys were not literally in the fire and hopefully you guys didn't inhale much smoke. look forwad to the next episode Thank You.
Another great episode Ryan. With all the fires we were and are still having here in Australia this episode was all too familiar. I look forward to the next one. 👍🏻👏🏻🇦🇺
Wow! Another episode. And I thought it was over. I told my husband he should watch it but first I wanted to rewatch the movie. He said he’s never heard of it. I would buy him the book but he wouldn’t have time to read it, with all his work hours. So the movie, it is. As soon as I can find it anyway.
I'm much more afraid of moose than wolves. Especially during mating season. I don't even remember hearing about a wolf attack, other than old fairy tales. In Prince George one time I came around a corner of a 2 lane road around midnight and there was the biggest bull moose I've ever seen, standing on the road with 2 females. I was in a little GMC Sonoma pickup and I swear to God I could have driven underneath him and the only thing that would have touched him was the antenna! The road was too icy & narrow to back up or turn around. All I could do was honk the horn, yell, & bang my hand on the outside of my door. After about 10 minutes of this he got bored and walked off. He wasn't the least bit afraid of me. I on the other hand, nearly needed to change my pants when I got home! Lmao
Ha ha right on, yes, moose definitely are scared of nothing. Great story you shared! I once was riding my snowmobile and came upon a moose standing right in the middle of the trail. I stopped and we just stared at each other. I would rev my engine which was probably quite loud to him, but he really didn't care. Like you, I had to wait a while until he left.
You guys are so great in the memory of Chris.:-) God bless you! I just wished I could reach into the video and put masks on you! Not scary Halloween masks but life saving filtering masks! I've been in that situation up in Oregon and I was thankful for air conditioning because it was also so hot. But I was able to stay close to the coast. With my dog spot. And as we traveled south from Brookings Oregon at the California border it got less and less. But I had windows up but still my eyes were burning and I could feel it in my lungs. My German Shepherd spot was sound asleep in the backseat and thankfully it didn't affect him as a senior dog:-). One day I will go to Chris's bus. I feel there's a lot of spirit energy that is nothing but positive and beautiful. God bless Chris God bless his family God bless you and your families and God bless the world. Much love, l o r r i r o s s
What an adventure the two of you shared....wow.....and to have it all recorded....fantastic....thanks for sharing with all of us.....I really am enjoying this trip.
Another thought, :-) from someone who feels she's been alone and gone through the gas experiences night and day and also been thankful for the Miracles that have happened during those experiences haha but serious! All that traffic passing you by, many of them may have full tanks. And rather than worry and talk about it in a negative sense just know that you can pull over get out wave your arms frantically, even if you're not frantic. You can jump around like a madman with your arms waving and be smiling at the same time! :-) someone will more than likely pull over and if you have a hose and don't mind a little gas in your nose, siphon a little bit from someone into your can or ride into your car. Being careful of course. But there are so many wonderful people in this human race. And I have been reminded of it right when I'm on the edge of losing hope. I'm in a situation now with being evicted and yet these Little Miracles keep me going day by day so that I can focus on being free of it all! Yay! Anywho, just sharing my thoughts thank you
Yes, I'm glad we stopped to see the movie bus. Didn't have the same "feel" as the Magic Bus, but was still good to experience. They had an excellent dedication to Chris with all the pictures inside as well.
Up early for work and was so excited to see another video. I'm rushing to get out the door but totally worth it. Thanks again guys for sharing. Hope you both are having a great day. 😎
Wow not a good feeling driving thru the fires. I was driving in Idaho once and there was a big fire north of where I was. Had to pull off for awhile couldn t see anything
Absolutely love this series and this episode with the fires was stressful to watch, let alone actually being there! I have to ask one question though, why on earth didn't you put the fuel from your can into the car before you were guided through the fires, to ensure you didn't run out in the middle of the smoke and flames?
Thanks Carol! To be honest, not sure why we didn't put the fuel in earlier. There was a lot to process at that time, we were just rolling with it. Also, we did not know the fire would be that close to the road, he just said the smoke was real bad.
It's almost like a rerun. You guys had the gas issue on the way there but I don't remember if you actually run out. All I could think of is the fire could spread to you if the car ran out of gas you wouldn't have any where or way to escape the fire. I will be waiting to find out if you did run out again. I hope not.
Yes you would think after Dawson City we would be more careful about fuel. However, when we left Fairbanks we still had more than a half talk of gas and it was only about 9pm so we figured it would be no problem to drive an hour or so till the smoke cleared and fill up with gas. Well, they all closed between 9 and 10pm so we were pretty hooped and had no choice but to keep driving!!
In a pickle nope I think your pickle was almost cooked! LOL ;) In a positive note you would have died in a sweet ride LOL. :) I do believe it was a coyote a wolf is huge and that looked scrawny. If it was a wolf and hungry you would be in pieces. Just sayin' LOL ;) Those cars have a incredible big trunk which you cannot find in any car today.
Yes that trunk was huge and a good thing as we had so much stuff. If there was a next time, it could be packed a bit lighter. Pretty sure that was a wolf, they are pretty timid on their own, vicious in a pack. I've been closer than that to a wolf, the smoke was so thick it was probably pretty dazed, tired and lost.
