Hold on. Catelyn…hearing tales…from her maids…which they heard…from Ned’s soldiers…which (it seems) the soldiers had even heard from others, i.e. not even witnessed. THAT is not a retcon. Yea and also the Jon getting a holdfast thing is not retconned either. Ned maybe considered that plan at some point but he himself says that's a "dream of spring" which means something along the lines of "that's far away and too ambitious". He might have plans for Jon and still think that as a bastard his status would hinder him. I don't think those two are contradictory at all. Preston just takes a single line of a character suggesting something, turns it into a solid canon plan and then complains that what actually ends up happening is different. Ned might have wanted to give Jon a higher status but then realized people would dislike that cause he's a bastard or just abandoned the plan entirely for other reasons.

There are a lot of things that Ashara can accomplish in the story, we just don't have enough information yet. Something that always stuck out to me was when Barriston mentioned how looking at Dany reminded him of Ashara, almost as if she were Ashara's daughter. Given that Dany's memories are totally incongruous with what we know, I kind of entertain her being born in Dorne to Ashara and some unknown father - maybe Ned, maybe Brandon, maybe Howland. Being born in Dorne would make the lemon tree thing make more sense, and also explain how Doran somehow had a marriage pact between Viserys-Arianne and Dany-Quentyn. Not to mention Ned's absolute refusal to have Dany killed (if he faciliated her exodus).

@@umwha I think Preston has mentioned it before, though it has been around for a long time. I think it is really odd for Cat (and thus GRRM) to bring up Ashara Dayne as a possible mother to Jon, a character who is among the most important in the story, at the VERY beginning of the first book. It would be a little underwhelming for her to be a complete red herring, like Willa or the fisherman's daughter, given how mysterious she is, how much she pops up in other parts of the series, and how important her house likely is to the endgame. It would be pretty narratively satisfying, in my opinion, for her to be floated as Jon's possible mother early on, only to subvert that expectation by actually being **Dany's** mother. It also logistically makes sense, given Dany would have been born at the end of the rebellion and she is about a year younger than Robb, who was born at the start of the rebellion.
@SirBallsDeepOfHouseManthrust

Ned and Stannis are middle brothers - to boisterous, charismatic. philandering older brothers, and personable, dreamy younger brothers. They both had unexpected responsibility thrust upon them. @Longshanks1690 3 месяца назад
George hadn’t got his geography mapped out yet, there was no way Dornish law was even on his mind. 😂 But even taking the point… no. Under the Act of Union of 1707, Scotland would retain its independent legal system, schools, church and so on, only losing its Parliament. But this doesn’t change the fact that it did unite with England and Charles III is the King on both sides of the border. So while Dorne retains local control over its own issues, as Scotland does, it is still bound to the overall national laws of the Iron Throne, Sunspear pays its taxes to King’s Landing and the Prince swears fealty to the LOTSK. A greater amount of autonomy doesn’t change the fact that it’s not a separate country.

I think when Ned talks about Bran bridging the gap, what he means is bridging the gap between the families that is created by Robb and Jeffrey disliking each other. By Bran befriending the princes, and Robb being off in the North, it allows the other boys to grow closer without dislike of Robb interfering with the relationship. It's just awkwardly worded so it suggests the gap being repaired is between the two boys and not the two families.

It is weird that Bran is somehow supposed to fix the animosity between Robb and Joffrey… when Robb isn't even going to King's Landing. I suppose Ned and Cat are thinking more about Joffrey's opinion on House Stark as a whole. If Joff hates Robb (who will one day become Lord) that would obviously color his perception of all of House Stark. But if he gets introduced to Bran and gets won over by Bran's easy smiles and charming personality… he might think "Hey, those Starks might not be so bad after all!". At least I think that's where George was going with that whole idea.

Sitting around the hearth telling stories can just be a family activity, doesn't mean it is cold everywhere/anywhere else...not a contradiction at all. You can have multiple feelings about someone/something. He could just be saying that all the visitors from the south are part of the king's party. Since it's clearly from someone from the south it must be someone from the king's party that delivered the note. The Stark master could travel to deliver a Stark child. She could want the fire for warmth too & burning in a fireplace is easier than over a candle - and she probably started it with a candle. @therealmarkg171
@therealmarkg171 3 месяца назад
We know Walys was still the maester when Brandon was betrothed to Cat in around 277 when she was 12 as Barbrey says it was his idea. So we're only 5 years out from the Rebellion while he's still there. Regardless, we can safely say Luwin was a Riverrun maester from the following: - Cat outright says he delivered all her children and Robb was born at Riverrun. So we know he was there then at least. - Littlefinger says to Lysa in ASOS that the "old maester" that killed their child is dead now like Hoster. Luwin was old and is fairly recently dead by this point. Maester Vyman, the current Riverrun maester, by contrast while old is very much still alive in the story and continues to be as of ADWD. So Littlefinger can't be talking about Vyman. - Cat asks Maester Vyman about Tansy and why Hoster would be so interested in it and Vyman has no idea what she's talking about, while acknowledging he knows it's also the name of a flower/herb (obviously as he's a maester). - In addition to the above, Hoster is ranting day and night about tansy, blood, needing forgiveness, etc., and Vyman is constantly with him during it. So you'd think he'd eventually clue in that Hoster's talking about the time he made Vyman abort Lysa's baby with tansy tea. But he never does so it's not him who aborted Lysa's baby. Again, like we already know from Littlefinger's comments about that maester being dead unlike Vyman. - Lysa's baby with LF predates the war so it can't be a case of Luwin having been the Winterfell maester who marched south with Ned and simply stayed at Riverrun during the war. He wouldn't have been the one who aborted Lysa's baby if that was the case. Ned only gets to Riverrun after Lysa had already long aborted the baby and was secretly known to be fertile enough to have another by now and so wed Jon who needed an heir. - Luwin doesn't follow Robb to war and instead stays to counsel the acting lord Bran. He also stays when Theon captures the castle and counsels him as the new acting lord. We have no reason to think he'd have followed Ned to war when he's never done so in the story. He'd have stayed at Winterfell to counsel Benjen. So Luwin was a Riverrun maester. I say "a" maester and not "the" sole maester as we do however know that Vyman also was a Riverrun maester in Cat's youth. While discussing the tansy issue Cat and him recall an old woman named Violet who used to come to the castle. I doubt this Violet woman was exactly coming to Riverrun in the midst of the Rebellion so it predates that, placing Vyman there in Cat's youth too alongside Luwin. The only way to reconcile it all is that both Luwin and Vyman were maesters at Riverrun. We do see this occurring elsewhere at Dragonstone where Stannis has both Cressen and Pylos, and Robert had both a maester with him during the Rebellion and Cressen back at Storm's End with Stannis for the siege. So multiple maesters at Riverrun isn't an issue. Then at some point during/after the war Walys either died of old age and needed replacing, was simply sent to another castle (maesters also die when castles get stormed so one dying somewhere during the war is possible), and/or Ned asked Luwin to come to Winterfell to replace Walys as Luwin already knew Catelyn and Robb and Vyman could handle Riverrun. All in all though, Luwin's the only one who actually fits having been originally a Riverrun maester. Vyman can't from the simple fact that he's alive while LF says the maester is dead.

The problem is that Ashara being the mother completely screws the timeline. Ned only goes to Starfall after the Tower of Joy, near the end of the rebellion, and it would be really bizarre if he’d stayed there 9 months and no one mentioned it. When Catelyn gets from Riverrun to Winterfell with Robb, she finds Ned, Jon, and Wylla already there and Jon isn’t a newborn.

The comment you made at 1:19:43, about Jon's kids being trueborn is very interesting, because the whole situation regarding children of bastards is not really explored. Are they trueborn scions of their grandfather's house, still snows, rivers etc, or are they members of a new house? The closest thing to an answer to this in my view is something Walder Frey says in Catelyn VI ASOS, when he is presenting his Daughters and Granddaughters to Robb, he points that one of the girls is Walder Rivers daughter, and thus she is not a Frey and shouldn't be there with the trueborn girls. Martin really left this whole thing about legitimate children of bastards unclear in my opinion.
@memeaficionado
@memeaficionado 3 месяца назад
This is slightly discussed with characters like Rennifer Longwaters. When highborn bastards wed and have kids, they tend to alter their last names and start a new pseudo-connected house. His great grandfather was a Waters, but his grandfather made the name Longwaters to distinguish his own line

If the bastard last names kept going through generations there would probably be a lot more people named Snow, Rivers etc. Like think about it every bastard would have children and they would go on to have even more children. Over centuries that would accumulate to a big chunk of the North being Snows.

If I had to justify the Luwin-Riverrun thing, I guess Luwin was the Winterfell maester, went south with Ned's army during the rebellion, stayed at the Trident tending the wounded as Ned went on to KL. Ned lost contact with everyone when he went to Dorne, so Luwin went to Riverrun to rendez-vous with Ned there, and was on hand when Cat gave birth?

Does Cat actually burn the letter? "She slid the paper in among the kindling and placed the heavier logs on top of it." Then Ned interrupts her with a hug and they talk, and the task of destroying the letter is kinda forgotten? Kind of a missed opportunity not holding the letter to a candle to burn it - the blue wax melting on her fingers could've foreshadowed her catspaw hand injury and the way it would've looked like bruising could've foreshadowed her eventual corpsy zombification?

I don’t think the comment about Arthur Dayne and single combat is a retcon, but an early nod to the idea that no one actually knows what happened at the Tower of Joy and have overromanticised the details in place of actual knowledge. So when we come back to look at this, we’re supposed to think that Cat’s comment here isn’t quite right and doesn’t line up with what we know. At least, that’s how I would read it. It is very possible George just had a different idea so it is a retcon but from the way it’s written, I can’t help but think we’re supposed to be immediately sus at the idea of someone like Ned defeating a fearsome knight in single combat.

I think it's not-so-great writing that we get 10 chapters inside Ned's head, some where he thinks about what his life could have been like if Brandon lived, some where he specifically thinks about Jon's mother, some where he specifically thinks about Rhaegar... and we never get anything that resembles clarity on these mysteries. I get that they are supposed to be mysteries, but if that's true then we shouldn't be in Ned's head when these things are being discussed. Otherwise we'd know!

Ned isn’t motivated by power or playing court politics. He knows the BS he’ll have to deal with if he takes the office, and doesn’t want to do it. Yes, the death of his father and brother in KL is sauce on the goose, but it isn’t a simple one-to-one motivation. He just wants to stay home and do his thing in the north, not deal with national policy and personalities. When he stares out the window and complains about having to do Brandon’s job, he’s just throwing a little hissy-fit, like I’m sure any of us has done at one time or another. I really think that’s the long and short meaning of how it’s written.

Hi Preston! Love your analyses of these chapters! Just one thought: Do you think it's reasonable to assume that the question Catelyn asked Ned in bed that night was simply, "Is Ashara Dayne Jon Snow's mother?" Because then Ned's response makes sense and there isn't necessarily any connection between A and J (other than gossip that's almost certainly misinformed). Maybe that's cleaner than assuming Catelyn asked him something like "What's the truth about Arthur and Ashara and your trip to Starfall etc." and Ned responds with "Never ask me about Jon" and needlessly gives away that there's some connection there. Ned doesn't seem foolish enough to draw attention to Jon unnecessarily - I think if Catelyn hadn't mentioned Jon's name Ned would have said "never ask me about Ashara" and then squashed the whisperings as he does.

I actually like your B+A=J theory but I think I can give the "Where is the A in R + L = J?" She is the one that created the lie, When he went to Starfall not only to return the sword but becuase he needed a wet-nurse for Jon, then Ned tell Ashara about Jon, and because her brother died to protect Jon, she decided to help him by creating the lie, she tells Wylla to lie and say that the boy is hers, Wylla is never told about the true, but still swears to her lady to do it, then Ashara as the only other person that knows decides to leave to keep his true parentage a secret Ned would then had waited to get anoter wet-nurse before sending Jon to the North, so the Stark men would have found him at Starfal , they would then ask him why he was there and he would say that he fought Arthur and brought back Dawn to Starfall, they ask if Ashara was the mother and he didn't want to talk about it, still feeling bad about lying, and that how the rumor started, when Cat asked about her, he knew she just randomly wanted to talk about a dornish lady, so he put two and two together, and figured out why she was asking about her, because of his guilt about lying he told her not to talk about Jon's Mother to end the conversation ones and for all
