Another tip, bring cash, because a) it limits the amount of money you can spend, and b) a lot of the vendors (at least at my local expos) won't take cards. Sure, expo venues usually have atms nearby, but it's easier to regulate yourself when you pay with the cash you bring.

Some more random tips for anyone interested: 1. Make a list of the things you're looking to buy and of any questions you want to ask, it can be easy to forget to buy an item or ask an important question! 2. Take the breeder's business card that they usually have at their table, it's good for when you have additional questions after the expo, and most breeders don't mind the occasional text 3. Don't feel like you have to buy an animal that you've handled/shown interest in, the pressure can be a lot when the breeder is right there watching you but ultimately it's better to be 100% sure that the animal is right for you Cheers!

I went to an expo "to just look." It's near impossible to leave without getting something. I came home with a ball python. I had done moderate research, but it was a little impulsive! I would recommend having the tank, substrate and environment ready before getting an animal! When I took her home, all I wanted was for her to be comfortable in her tank but it took me a while to gather supplies and set it up
@bluestang9530
@bluestang9530 3 года назад
Before I go I usually have a few animals in mind that I “might” come home with. So in the week before I set up two or three enclosures just in case I come home with something. I’ve only been to a show twice but bought something both times. First show was a Vietnamese centipede and second was a milk snake and a alligator snapper lol. I feel like a tweaker walking around an expo lmao

My tip would be if you know what reptile you want, have a list of questions prepared. It can exciting in the heat of the moment getting a new animal and it might slip your mind to ask obvious questions like what it's eating, it's age etc. I got my first ball python last weekend at my local expo and I ended up having to email the breeder a day later with basic questions because I was so excited :P

Check online for reviews of vendors. There are a few seriously shady ones here in my state who are at ALL of the expos. Like this one guy is known to pick up animals at the airport on the way to the expo.
@moehrengruen1196
@moehrengruen1196 6 лет назад
My first animal was a praying mantis and I kept it how the seller told me which was completely wrong. I noticed that something was wrong so I did my own research but it was too late so safe her. Since then I don't trust anybody who wants to sell me a pet. Its the best to inform yourself about the breeders who are on the expo and buy from the ones with a good reputation
@YamiNoSensei13
@YamiNoSensei13 6 лет назад
It's also best to know what you want and research the care requirements beforehand.
@switchtheflip9422

YamiNoSensei13 familiarizing yourself with vendors also keeps you from supporting horrible businesses and can help increase your chances of getting a specimen that was better taken care of

Why would you not do research before wtf...
@innercitydaydreamer1124
@innercitydaydreamer1124 6 лет назад
The biggest issue i come across is that the sellers are often hired by the breeders but only trained on specific species and general questions so they get confused and mix up information. Its vary disheartening.
@hajarmdn4883
@hajarmdn4883 5 лет назад
@@stadzh it was their first pet. Unfortunately a lot of people don't understand the commitment at first. I know I didn't with my first hamster. I made very fast research and just listened to the pet shop owner because I trusted that they knew better. They didn't. I didn't even make enough research about hamsters until after a couple months of getting my second one after I stumbled upon Jenna Marbles hamster video. She is now being spoiled and living her best life. My cat got the same treatment, knowing my previous blunder, I made a lot of research to know exactly how to make sure he thrives (l got him off the street and wasn't even counting on keeping him at first so that's why I didn't research for him beforehand). And I'm still lacking. I won't do that mistake again. I want a snake now and it's been over a year of research and since I livein a third world country and only found one shop selling reptiles (and they're so bad. They don't have any hides for their animals. Housing two adult ball python together. Only feed live. The leopard geckos are all together and the poor animals are in such a bad state), I'm doing more research until I can find more, specially frozen mice since I don't want to feed live. If I don't find that then I won't buy a snake. I made mistakes before but I'm counting on making things better in the future.

My breeder is usually at the local Repticon. There he sold a lady one of his first normal female ball python breeders for about $250 when it was around $50 in store. This is common at most Repticons because you don't want to have to drive to them so if you want it then and there Repticon prices are usually higher. (Not all)

if the morph is the defining factor about wether you'll get a snake or not, you shouldn't own them in the first place, unless it's some venomous view only snake, which in this case it'd definitely not. it should be more about health, personality, what it feeds on, and other similar stuff, not just how it looks.
@maddiemainer
@maddiemainer 6 лет назад
white lip pythons are not a morph, they are a species of leiopython from Indonesia. I have a certain locality I am aiming to get, and have been interested in and done research on for years. It is 100% okay to purchase a snake based on morph as long as you can care for it properly, and it's not a morph (like spider or lemon frost leopard geckos that carry cancerous genetics) that has demand which continues to promote breeding a gene associated with neurological or other issues (head wobble). I do, however, have any issue if someone acquires a "problem gene" animal through rescue or adoption.

What plants would you recommend for a boiactive ball python tank that grows pretty large (to provide more hiding areas for the snake) but can withstand the snake laying on top of it or slithering over it. I have a pothos and plan to use it in the tanks but i don't want to be limited to just that one type.

Basic corn snake care should apply, but feed smaller rodents and make sure the cage is "baby-proofed" (keeping small holes closed so that they can't get their head stuck, providing appropriately sized hides, etc)

Emma Stanworth Ohh, congratulations! I'm still struggling to convince my parents to let me get one, they know I've done tons of research and I have an estimation of the total cost, which I can afford to pay for entirely by myself, but they still won't let me, and the only reason I've been given is "Snakes are creepy."

IceRiver1020 I currently own an adult corn, it took me 1 minute to convince my mum for a snake lol 😂. I've changed my mind about getting another corn. I was offered a 17ft Burmese python for free from a breeder but I haven't got space lol. I'm just gonna get a boa

After I get all the supplies for my ball python I wanted to go to an expo but I was wondering how much I should save up if I'm trying to hunt out a banana ball python? I know big websites usually overpriced so I was wondering if they did at expos as well or just how much they would go for in general at the expo

Great tips, my family just recently started growing our collection, were actually going to begin breeding ball pythons and these are great tips for people looking to pick up an animal at a show. Nice job!

My reptile expos are awesome, they don’t allow wild caught animals, the breeders are small and local, the prices and variety are the best around, the breeders are knowledgeable and truly care about the well being of the animals, and most of all the animals are so healthy and happy and when you buy from them you’re supporting the reptile society where I live, so I go there every time, even if all I buy is supplies, I have a great time. I’ve never had a bad experience there.

I’m going to my first repticon with some friends next weekend, do you have to be of a certain age to purchase an animal?

Bonus tip thing: +when handling the reptile, check for mites and ticks too. If its a black reptile like a mexican black kingsnake, run your hand across the body and check if theres black spots on ur hand, which are the mites (doesnt have to be all black). Got this from Tyler Rugge

You also mentioned purchasing one animal at a time. I do understand that. However impulse shopping can get you for sure. Personally though I buy multiples at a time and here is what I do when I attend. First at home I set up the cages (quarantined)for what I am thinking of buying and do my research. Then I write it down on a list. Now when I go I am already set up for the animal I want. At the same token If I do an impulse purchase I try to keep it within the same perimeters (cages, size, environment, etc..) of what I originally wanted with maybe a few minor changes. Also I never do impulse on a rare animal I know nothing about. I learned the hard way with this when it came to panther chameleons (not that they are rare, but I knew nothing). I now have two in my collection but my first one I was not ready to take on that challenge, and the animal suffered for my stupidity. I felt horrible. Even with that being said. Never give up. If you really want it as a pet. go for it. If it dies it may not have even been your fault. It could have had an infection before you bought it, and that may or may not be the breeders fault. A lot of people are handling these things and could pass on an infection from one animal to another. still do not blame them, and do not get discouraged. You will still have the set up. Take time, do more research and do you best to find out what went wrong so that it does not happen again.

i got a white’s tree frog a couple months ago from repticon, but it was sick because the breeder lied about it being captive bred :/ he’s healthy now, so i’m considered either getting another one in a couple weeks at repticon again (different breeder obviously) or a pixie frog. i cant decide

I love animals like most people here probably...so I found the reptile expo exhausting...it was fun at first. I was only there a couple hours but I totally ran out of energy...I did get to get my hognose boy who I love very much though.😊
