Hmmm: I remember my mom telling me when we were taking in a dog that the re-home fee was to deter people like animal hoarders or people who abuse them. It made a certain amount of sense; if you were willing to pay money, you had to actually want it, and if you could pay money for it, you could afford the care. Maybe it's similar for reptiles?

rehoming fees are important because they help prevent impulse buys and abuse. there's people who get "free to good home" dogs on craigslist just to resell them for profit or to use them as bait dogs, so i'm sure there's risks associated with listing a reptile for free online as well.

Rehoming fees for cats and dogs are important because it decreases the chances of the animals going to bad homes or dog fighting rings, so for a reptile I’m guessing it’s just to make sure the person is financially stable enough to own the animal or that it’s not just someone who sees “free snake” and gets it just because “why not”

you could also rehome reptiles from friends who don't want their anymore in some cases. Generally, they'll be willing to give the pet to you for free, since they dont want it and you know them personally. At least, that's how i got my two RES turtles XD its been three years and they've grown so much X3

As a rescuer, I charge a rehoming fee, but I only charge the market price for the animal regardless of morph. I charge, for example, a flat rehome fee of $35. That is because the animals I rescue need to be dewormed and fed, sometimes they need carnivore care or other special medication. The rehome fee is to discourage them from being fed off as snake food, for example. Plus I vet my adopters to make sure they are trustworthy. Farm breeding depends on the country in question and its socio-economic situation. Indonesia, for example, exports and "farms" animals on a very large scale, often exploiting slave and child labor. It is unlikely that Indonesia's wildlife trade will ever become more humane, at least not until they address the high amount of people who live under the poverty line within their borders and the slavery that goes on under their noses.

I have been thinking about getting a corn snake or a ball python (I'm getting a corn snake) and I was going to get them from backwater reptiles and I am SO GRATEFUL that I watched this video because I want my corn snake to be the happiest and healthiest snake possible ❤️thank you... New sub!?!

Thank you for pointing out Petco . I worked there for 10 years , only because I felt bad for the animals . So much neglect that was demanded by the higher ups . And the abuse ... they required us to force feed Balls that only took live feeds ( they had a contract with PETA ) . We had hamsters coming in sick and aggressive all the time, and when our vet found evidence directly related to the breeders conditions he was fired ! I left and went to a mom n pop shop, and never had a sick or mean hamster the whole time I was there .

private breeders on fauna classifieds can be pretty good. I got a leachianus from there from a breeder, and im glad i did.

I think some reason for rehoming fees is to make sure the new owner is serious and doesn't just want a free animal that will be given away again. But that's definitely not true for all people trying to rehome their animal

I've read you should always charge a re-homing fee to deter people from taking the animal on impulse, or for cruel reasons. Apparently people sometimes take free animals to feed to other animals, or to make them fight.

We rescued a leopard gecko from a friend who's roommate left it behind when he moved out and our friend has no idea what to do. Poor gecko had no care from his previous owner as he had no light/heat source and was skinny. Totally different now - we've had him 8 years! We do our research on local breeders and we are now breeding our own. It really matters to me and most people how their animal is taken care of. I tell my husband we should buy the ones in Pet smart/co because I am sad for them. But he says if we don't, hopefully they won't carry them anymore due to lack of demand and the animals will be better off for it. Who knows. One can dream all animals/pets are happy and healthy from birth to perm home!

Great video Alex and farm raise mean is like whole sale reptiles,they keep them all together in one cage and they feed them like they’re chickens(from what I’ve heard)

I’m trying to get a toad, and the options I’ve been seeing don’t seem reputable at all. I’m also trying to find one in the wild, because most American toads are wild caught anyway, and they are very rarely captive bred. I’ve also looked into adoption sites, but they mostly have turtles and iguanas and such. It’s hard because toads just aren’t very desirable.

I got both of my snakes from a small, trustworthy breeder, but sadly she had to close down her shop so i'm gonna have to find another source. I think i will get my next animal from an expo or from a rescue.

My favorite place if you are in Minneapolis Minnesota is twin cities reptile. Tons of cool animals and an awesome shop with fat healthy reptiles (especially beardies which is what I mainly keep)

I think morph market is a great site cause you can compare a whole bunch of different breeders. You definitely wanna do research on the breeders you consider tho.

If you're in that little panhandle of West Virginia next to Maryland and Virginia, I recommend Naked Acres in Martinsburg. I got my ball python and her food there. There's a very large variety of animals too, and you can handle them before you buy them. 👌👌👌

How do you feel about backwater reptiles 🦎 because a lot of people say it’s good and others say it was horrible, they also sell some wild caught animals

What about cbreptiles? I'm reading mixed reviews. Now I'm worried because I spent $500 on a panther cham for my husbands birthday, then I spent another $250 on new t5 uvb bulbs for our veild chams. These people have gotten over $700 from me and I've got nothing but an order confirmation email. That made me worry a little bit so I did more research and now I'm confused. Idk if they are good or bad? Your opinion means a lot to me and I feel like I can trust what you say about them.

If ur in a big city, local reptile shops r the best place for ur reptile needs. They r a little over priced usually with their stock but they have better feeders prices then the pet smart/ petco

Occasionally petsmart and petco will have a adoption animal that they dont ask for money for. They dont profit from that so that is the one exception to big corporate animal sales imo

Idk about rehoming fees for reptiles but for cats and dogs it is important to do only so that there is some value placed on the animal. A person looking for free snake food is not going to want to spend $30 on your kitten since they wouldnt save money over just buying frozen thawed or a feeder rabbit. It also helps to avoid to some degree a person who is planning to torture or abuse the animal for fun. If a person is looking for a animal for the sole purpose of torturing it they will likely choose the free ones. This is a sick sad thing but offering animals for free on Craigs list etc increases the likelyhood of the animal being harmed. The rehome fees should be high enough that a person could buy snake food for cheaper and low enough that you are not profiting. So rehome fees should be to try and help the animal rather than to make money. People who pay for an animal are less likely to be getting it for the sole purpose of abuse or feeding it to something else. Many stories out there of people looking through the free pet ads for animals to hurt or feed to snakes etc. I would also ask about other animals in the house and request that I speak to their vet etc but I have a rescue that helps me with that.

I would love to open a reptile shelter in Florida some day. Its sad to see how these animals suffer when owners don't have good options. The alternative is them setting it free which is an overwhelming problem here down south.

Ordered a normal ball python from backwater reptiles the day before yesterday, payed $45 along with the extra $60 for the actual snake, so It should've come today, its now currently 4:57 and no dice. I've been looking for a bp for two years and when I saw a company who wasn't out of stock, I jumped the gun (stupid I know). After checking their reveiws I'm pretty sure I'm either getting a dead snake, a sick snake, or no snake at all.

Underground reptiles I now just looked up and has some pretty cool snakes! Only problem I see is some of there snakes are venomous and some are from the wild.

BHB has great care. No business owner would video tape their animals daily and post it if they're not doing it right. Brian has a team of extremely experienced workers that would never do something bad with their animals.
