Porcupine Rim in Moab, Utah, is one of the most iconic trails in all of mountain biking. Tens of thousands of people ride down it every year. But how many people try to go UP it? The idea was too intriguing to pass up.

I have done this. Drove to the top of the trail and was going to ride solo. Met a random guy in the parking lot and we decided to ride together (that's how Moab is). Came to find he was a 17 year old expert racer. I was 30 at the time but in good shape. We went down the whole Porcupine Rim trail. Still my favorite trail of all time. Then we got to the bottom with no shuttle to town and my rental car at the top. There was water at the bottom, we both joked about how we were not road riders, so we topped off on water and decided to climb it back up Porcupine Rim. There were a few hike-a-bike sections but we rode at least 95% of it and it was damn challenging.

I have only ridden in Moab once and that was in 1994. Porcupine Rim was one of the trails that I rode solo, didn't know any better, and went that same direction....wrong direction. Regardless, it was a fantastic ride. I did Portal Trail also, solo....my riding buddy wasn't feeling great that whole week we were there, so he only did Gemini Bridges and Slick Rock w/ me. I watch videos of these trails and it's definitely more eroded compared to what it was 27 yrs ago. I still hope to get back out there some time to ride those trails again, but at 55 I am a bit more cautious.

Another brilliantly "bad idea", keep em coming, they are brilliant 💡 I remember you tried a Zerode with a Pinion gearbox some years back (maybe in the Alps?). Apart from the weight of the bike, how do you feel a gearbox would do in technical climbs, considering you can shift while trackstanding or coasting?

I'm surprised how much of it you did manage to clear. Having been down it myself I'd never want to go up it haha. And yes the Ripmo is like the bike of choice for WE. I rode it in late October and probably saw over a dozen Ripmos other than my own. Even in the group of 4 I was riding with it was 2x Ripmos, a Transition Sentinel and a Stumpy.

It went together easily in less than an hour. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

You could easily do Portal, take your time ride Poison Spider up. It’s not as bad as some say but 1000 paces through the sand ain’t for everyone. That said, you’ll have more strength for Portal this way. The usual way, Mag 7 shuttle is probably the best way but it’s more of an effort.

Don't worry about Portal. Walk where the signs are and you're good. Still technical downhill stuff farther down but without the exposure. Now Gold Bar Rim immediately before I'd say is harder and has some big features and power moves.
@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 2 года назад
Agree. Riding the exposed section is simply stupid. There's absolutely nothing remarkable about it - except the exposure. Walk it to ride another day! Watched a sketch rider (who we met on the way up who crashed earlier in a non-technical section) ride it and we were sure he'd go over the edge. So not worth it.
@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 2 года назад
Still don't get riding without gloves! You, Mo, Hannah and a lot of other RU-vidrs often go without. So not worth it if you hit the dirt (rock)! Been on many a ride where a rider falls on or offroad, lands with hands out, and takes skin off both palms. Then it's a REALLY fun rest of the ride for them!
@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 2 года назад
Well, ok, now that I've watched a bit more (I commented below before watching.), this is indeed a crazy challenge. It's more suited for trials riding. OK, time to work on my trials hopping... That said, I haven't been on the lower section in a LONG time. Looks like a lot of it has been rerouted? Or there's an alternate, more technical version? Because I don't remember anything of this technical magnitude on Porcupine. Portal trail, yes! But Porc was always faster and more flowing... Excellent job at around the 7 minute mark! Very nice job! At 15:00 looks like the drop off where I snapped a BB spindle. Oh, the days of bombing Porcupine RIGID!!! Edit: I realize why. I rode it before the trail terminus was moved to its new location with the tunnel under the highway. Pre-bike path and all that stuff where the trail just dumped you out on the road. More goodness to explore!
