Ah, this is another one I was waiting for. I have a large number of these chips and more coming. But I wonder. Do you check the solution post-SMB to ensure the gold recovery was complete? Sometimes SMB doesn't work very well when the concentration is low. I've used hydroquinone and formaldehyde to grab remaining gold.
This is the video i have been looking for a long time. I have mainly mixed chips and was wondering how to process them. I like this process. Hopefully it will work for me the first time I do it. Is the aqua regia solution warm or room temprature before adding the Urea and with the SMB? And is it better to add SMB dry or added to water then added to the aqua regia solution to drop the gold?
It depends on the gold concentration, but I've always found keeping both solutions warm works best. And use as little aqua regia as you can. It may take longer to dissolve everything, but it can increase recovery by a factor of 3 or more when you have concentrated gold soln vs dilute. With a concentrated gold soln, I've gotten heavy gold sponge in SECONDS with nearly complete recovery and a negative stannous chloride test on the remaining solution. Basically, do everything you can to get rid of the base metals. Then your gold solution will be as concentrated as possible. I keep adding impure gold until nothing else dissolves, to enrich the solution as much as physically possible.
Your videos are interesting and informative. 🤔🙂👍 The chemistry scares me. 😨 Is this process really worth the resulting approx $200 in gold? How to neutralize the chemicals afterwards? What would happen if the chips were ground up and smelted directly? Would the gold be too 'dirty' for anything? Too many questions. 🤔 Still learning. 🙂
You can neutralize all the acids with carbonates or sodium hydroxide. I take advantage to my proximity to the ocean to use seashells: calcium carbonate. With sulfuric acid, you get calcium sulfate (gypsum). With nitric acid, calcium nitrate (a fertilizer). With hydrochloric acid, calcium chloride (the liquid highway salt sprayed in winter). Most of the nasty base metals will precipitate out with carbonates or hydroxide. I dry out and burn the goo in a furnace to turn it all into much-less-toxic metal oxides. I do always try to recover copper and any other metals that have a decent value: tantalum, halfnium, etc. And if you have access to an XRF gun to get the percentages in your wastes to be sure it's high enough, you can even try to concentrate and process the rare earth-rich goop into oxide blocks. Some refiners will buy enriched rare earth oxides.
