GOLD MINES and a REALLY HIGH FIRE TOWER

Sunday morning we roll out of camp after brekky and a poke around in Wilsons Hut near Bendoc. We head for the old Victoria Star Mine and check out the old mine shafts spotted around the area. Fascinating to think of the work that went into these mines.
We continued further down the road and came across another old steam engine that was sign posted as the 'Aspen Battery'. We had a look around for more relics in the area but just ended up in dense tree ferns along a small creek.
The next mine was only five minutes up the road and it had some safety fences and grates in place. The two shafts there were very impressive.
Lunch was in the park in the middle of Bendoc. It was the perfect spot as there is lots of signage and old mining relics to read and view. Interesting stuff.
After lunch we went up to the fire tower and climb nine tenths of the way up. Scary but incredible views!
The region around Bendoc is well worth a visit. Beautiful bushland and lots of history to learn about.

Awesome, bringing back some memories when I was a 1 year old living in Bendoc. 😂😂 That big log was put there by my Grandfather, he owned the sawmill in town back in the 70’s !

@aguyandhistroopy
@aguyandhistroopy Год назад
@@simmoarthur I was there in 1971, unsure what year the log was put there. I could ask me uncle… we were talking about it a few months back. Couldn’t tell what year the mill closed. Grandfather had mills in Bombala, Nimmitabel, and in Vic all the way to Poweltown ( near Drouin ) back in the day. When logging was a way of life and everyone one had a timber framed house with a wood fire. The good old days I’d say. I’ve been meaning to go back there to actually film for my YT channel. The boys have inspired me !!

Great episode. I haven’t been this far East. Will definitely have to check it out next trip into Vic early next year Last Friday we left CBR & drove through Jindabyne, down the Barry Way & camped at Limestone Creek. Then spent 2 nights at Wheeler’s Creek Hut dodging the rain and storms and then headed back via Corryong. Might see you out and about one day if you need a 60 series or Hilux to tag along.

Orange stuff looks like acid sulfate, happens when normally oxygen free saturated soils have been drained at some point and the iron starts to oxidise. those mine trenches have probably chaged the drainage a lot.

OK, my guess on the meaning of the book sign - after looking and finding nothing, even with a reverse image search and reviews of Vic Govt tourism and parks websites, is that it means the site is on the heritage list...looking at the Victorian Heritage Database under Bendoc, all those sites you went to are listed....but still no pic of that damn sign....
