Decided to share with you my favorite method for gold recovery - Gold Reverse Electroplating. It is not the quickest method of gold recovery but is definitely one of the methods that covers all types of gold plated materials: from poor pins to thick gold plated objects.

Would this work the same for gold-filled as it does for gold-plated? It seems like it wouldn't because gold is not soluble in room temperature sulfuric acid but I'm just wondering what your experience is because I have no experience with it myself and to be honest I'm having trouble seeing why it works so well with gold-plated for the same reason but then again it's not exactly in solution is it it's in suspension but I'm still unclear as to why
@escrapchannel
@escrapchannel Год назад
Hi, reverse electroplating is a slow process. For me it best works for layers of gold up to 5 microns as process is relatively fast and effective. The thicker the gold layer the more time you wait and for gold filled should be very slow. Gold is in solution as colloid gold suspension, that’s correct. If you boil the acid after completing the process gold will aggregate in pretty big pieces.

3 question , first How much big the concentration of the sulfuric acid? second the bakers were made from normal glass or quartz glass ? third How much big the temperature of the solution? thank your answer

Hello, sulphuric acid is 98%, normal glass, room temperature. Did not noticeably increase during the reaction.

Hello again my friend. Question. Right the time 17:40 in the video you mention water diluting the sulfuric. You are referring to the water that is already in the sulfuric. NOT water that is mixed with the sulfuric that you diluted with? Correct?

Hi, concentrated sulphuric acid is absorbing water from the air and concentration is dropping with time.

@@escrapchannel Brother...What a experience!!! I just performed my first reverse electroplating! Absolutely incredible! I have almost 5 pounds of plated material processed! I did almost have a accident. I was dipping a piece and I noticed a drop of sweat getting ready to drop from my glove into the acid. That would've been a problem! Correct? Thank you so much for the knowledge of this method. Works great!!! I'll let you know the outcome.

@@gregdickson5107 Hi, electrolyte should be concentrated sulphuric acid. If you have water in the acid it will eat the copper as happened.

@@escrapchannel I got it from a friend and it is supposed to be 98% but It is old so perhaps it has absorbed some water. Is there a way to test this? Alternatively how about using stainless on both sides as the cage is only really conducting the electricity after all.
@escrapchannel
@escrapchannel Месяц назад
@@gregdickson5107 Hi, long time ago I tested different materials for the basket and stainless did not work. It was destroyed in the cell. Copper is inert in concentrated sulphuric acid and not reacting. Sulphuric acid is dense and one option to check percentage is to check density. Measure weight and volume and calculate it. No option to buy concentrated acid?
@gregdickson5107
@gregdickson5107 Месяц назад
@@escrapchannel Thanks it looks like my sulphric acid was not as concentrated as I thought. Also as I didn't watch it constantly I think the current went really high and with that the temperature. High temperature makes the copper react with the sulphuric acid. After a few more tries were I also restricted the current so the watts stayed around 6 the temperature stayed nice and low and the basket came out fine. I have learned a lot this week. Thanks for your help.

What you need is a mesh made of a conductive material that is not soluble in sulfuric acid and I wonder what would suit that role? Do you think the large stick pieces that take so long would work faster if the acid were heated because it seems like it would and I wonder if the addition of salt might help without contaminating things too much
@escrapchannel
@escrapchannel Год назад
Best material for the mesh is brass or copper. They are stable in concentrated sulphuric acid. Cell is slowly heated by the reverse electroplating. Heat is not helping, so in larger scale cells are cooled during work.

With the removal of the fake gold plating whatever it was it is now in solution contaminating your gold or am I missing something
@escrapchannel
@escrapchannel Год назад
Hi, I do not directly melt the gold collected from the cell. After separating the residue I go through aqua Regia dissolving and reduction of gold. This purifies the gold after reverse electroplating.

@@escrapchannel Thankyou so much. It is the most informative video on this process that i have seen. Can the sulphuric acid be less than 96%?
@escrapchannel
@escrapchannel Год назад
Hi, as concentrated is considered 96%. As sulphuric acid absorbs water from air concentration is dropping constantly. When diluted sulphuric acid starts reacting with metals, so I would try object without value before using method for something expensive to strip gold from.

At 5 volts, what purity do you find you get on average opposed to base metals that also dissolve?
@escrapchannel
@escrapchannel 3 года назад
Hi, for me 5V is an acceptable speed/purity voltage. As I process the product further in aqua regia I did not directly melt the cell product to check purity. The good think at 5V is that it is low enough to avoid foam and other nasty effects that start if you further increase voltage.

Will not be quick. Gold foils will not be 24k but somewhere between 10-16k it may come out.
