That 8-minute scene in the caff with Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) sears the soul. The climactic birthday scene is off the scale; outstanding ensemble work from all concerned. A film that stays with you.

Ha ha ha Brenda Blyth has just been on Australian public radio telling the story of her award - she had an accident in the bathroom just before, attempting to wrangle her one-piece tuxedo and heavy pin, and peed on her collar! She said on radio that she was worried steam might come off her tuxedo under the lights and Nicholas Cage might have gotten a whiff!

Glad to see Brenda Blethyn receive this award although I was sort of rooting for Emily Watson for her heartbreaking portrayal of Bess in Breaking the Waves. There were a lot from 1996 that resonated with me. I wish we had more films like them today.

Both Brenda Blethyn & Emily Watson were equally fantastic in their roles. Im glad Brenda won,still my personal choice would've been Emily Watson. Cannot believe both lost the oscar to Frances McDormand(a great actress indeed) that year for her actual supporting role "Fargo".

Yeah, i was gonna say.. i think if Courtney Love won over Brenda Blethyn, the Golden Globes would have permanently lost all credibility. Honestly, as much as I love Madonna, it she should not have won an acting award.
