Fun fact is that every time Jack Nicholson won Oscar, main actress also won Oscar. Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment and Helen Hunt in As Good as It Gets.
You have to be an exceptional actor/actress to stand toe to toe with Jack. He just takes the set by storm, and if you can't match his energy, you might as well not be there. Hunt deserved the heII out of this.
@@alfredogomez5241 Dude, Jack was winning academy awards back in the 70's. This was Hunt's first academy award. Hunt is excellent, but implying that Jack needs another actor to win that award is ridiculous.
She is so likeable. Such a classy and humble person. Helen Hunt is much loved by all, critics, film makers and audiences alike. That Oscar could not have gone to a more deserving person.
Helen Hunt is absolutely brilliant opposite Nicholson and Kinnear in that movie. She really tied that movie together emotionally and, even though you want to punch Nicholson's character, her empathy and compassion for the dope somehow rubs off on the audience. One of very few great movies on my replay list.
I didnt want to punch his character. I thought it brilliant, and if someone was like that in real life which they are, they just say whatever comes out. I dont find anything offensive that people say. There is absolutely nothing a person can say to me, or to another person that I would find offense. .Nothing..
She is my wife’s school buddy from long ago. She is sweet but often complains about intrusive fans who fail to respect boundaries. Largely unrecognizable these days, she enjoys her anonymity. After her car accident she stayed with us for 2 weeks in Santa Cruz California where not a single person recognized her. She loved it!
She is a great actress. Well deserved. After rewatching the moving after 25 years....it is a genuine jewel of drama sparkling laughs of comedy as life it is. Great Helen Hunt. Bravo!
I really adore this actress... there is something about her, something special, vunerable. As good as it gets, l can watch again and again great film, great Jack, great supporting actors... 👍❤️👌😊Xxx
yes, best in history, of the entire universe of all of time, past present and all future universe's too .... and when time ends. and a new universe begins. she will always be godly
Love everything about this, the woman, the movie, the gratitude towards so many, but especially the way her husband looks at her when she addresses him..❤❤
@@sharonjensen3016 Yes, Shirley Knight. She set up Helen Hunt's "Okay." line perfectly. Shirley's performance in "As Good As It Gets" was one of the best in that movie. She's Actors Studio royalty.
It's great she won. One of my favorite movies to re-watch. The whole cast is terrific and the story is believable, because the actors make it so. Beautiful story.
To Mrs Hunt, I just wanted to tell you how much this film touches me every time I watch it...one of the top films ever made. The acting is so fluid and natural, and a beautiful story. Thank you for pulling my heartstrings every time i watch this film
This is clear win for Helen Hunt. Those who are against this outcome are either those that didn't even watch the movie As good as it gets, or those that watched Titanic in tears
I saw "as good as it gets" many many times, because it´s a good movie, but you people are so blind discrediting Titanic that you can't see what's in front of you. I mean it's all right if you don't like it, but in terms of acting, Kate Winslet was the best performance of the year, and Helen Hunt didn't do a bad job, but please! it's not THAT good as people say here in the comments. She doesn't even come close to his partner in the movie, Jack Nicholson, her performance it's clearly overrated, i don't know why, maybe because of the very good writting in the movie, but still. As for Titanic, Kate winslet is wonderful as usual, you can just see all her feelings in the expression of her face, as well as the change of her character through the film, from the melancholy classy young lady, trapped in the rules of the aristocratic society, to the passionate and rebellious girl in love, and the heroine and survivor.
If given good material, she's always great. It's just who ya know in the biz and I don't think she plays that game which makes me like her more, honestly. And yeah, she moved me to tears in Cast Away. (A huge compliment, with my deep dark bitchy heart lol) To captivate me in a scene as much as she does opposite of Tom Hanks in a movie? I'd say that's talent, given the Academy's (and the whole damn worlds) love of Hanks. I say this as someone who That Thing You Do! is a family tradition to watch it whenever its on TV so don't come for me, Hanks is great too.
A great acceptance speech by a great actress. Notice that she talked about the film, people who have helped her and the other people who were nominated. Future nominees - take note that she did not get into politics or causes “cause” she’s an actress and not a political sciences student nor a philosopher. Keep your acceptance speeches on point and you’ll be remembered as classy and beautiful as this lovely woman.
@@MelissaThompson432Well, how refreshing and charming it is that someone with an advanced degree in snarkiness decided to chime in, four years late. 😑
Helen was breathtakingly brilliant in that movie.. authentic to the point where you felt her pain her fears her becoming stronger her journey. It was all about character and neither big history or big events.. all the actors in that Movie squeezed the pretty simple story to it’s best… rewatched lately and still was amazed…
One of my favorite movies of all time! This was a slap in the face of Titanic, what you really need is an amazing script and extraordinary actors! And Jack God Nicholson and Helen Hunt were outstanding and unforgettable
you can see Kate Winslet was surprised, she was probably told she had it in the bag. but titanic is much more popcorn fluff and doesnt have the staying power that As Good As IT Gets Does. well made decisions by the academy that year. just as an aside I think the best Actor in Titanic had to be Kathy Bates as Molly Brown.
@@Mikebuster That's so unfair to base an acting award on a script or overall "feel" of a movie. It's the performance. I just hate giving out "acting talent" awards and having to choose ONE as "best"...it cheapens everything and makes people feel bad about themselves if they don't win. And it's always stuff out of their control. Yes they're almost always very wealthy people and they'll be fine no matter what, but it's still kinda shitty.
I'm, English, & it's refreshing to see, a brilliant, American, actress, like, Helen, win an, Oscar. It always seems to go to, posh, middle-class, English , actors.Well,deserved.An, amazing, performance.
That's because the Academy is made up of a bunch of liberals who tend to be Anglophiles (and Europhiles, in general). The rest of us Americans are as equally puzzled by all of the British (and European) love. Within the past decade, Hollywood has gotten ultra-liberal, which has resulted in more British (and European) castings/nominations/wins. However, the country now seems to be shifting right politically -- many Americans are sick and tired of woke culture/politics, which is championed by liberals -- so it will be interesting to see how that will affect the Oscars/Hollywood in this decade and beyond, after the Republicans take both houses of Congress and the White House (and then some). Conservatives are generally patriotic, so if they begin calling the shots, it will be all about America First. Liberals have a reputation/history of being un-American.
I swear... This is the best thing I have ever watched in my still young but 30 years life. Melvin made me fucking cry like a baby.... it has to be shown to everyone.... It has to be forcefully shown to every! one!
There were more unexpected moments in “As Good As It Gets,” than in any movie I have ever seen. I am so glad it was Jack, Helen, Greg and Cuba who were in it. So beautiful.
What can I say? It fills me with emotion to see again -like the many times before- this intimate scene that gives me a feeling of something wonderful that I don't know how to define and that can only be in the divine hearts of a mother and daughter who love each other deeply. Helen Hunt has that incredible ability to make us feel the nobility, goodness and immeasurable beauty of the soul of a woman who was born to give the best of herself to everyone who needs it and who needs love and comfort.
I am thrilled she won. One thing about her that has puzzled me for a long time. She lived with Hank Azaria for 6 years and the minute they said "I Do" it became "I Don't (anymore)" like so many others in Tinsel Town when they put a ring on it!
She’s incredible. So elegantly beautiful in that dress, while still showing the incongruence of somehow being too down-to-earth to project that untouchability implied. Her subtle sense of witty humor is just icing on a wonderful cake.
i love many actresses and many movies in hollywood but this women and as good as it gets are something else, really beautiful performance that touche your heart
Helen’s right that Greg Kinnear’s performance was fantastic. Robin Williams, who won the Oscar for supporting actor in Good Will Hunting, was also terrific. Both weren’t typecasted into their respective roles. I think Robin playing a “serious” character that was quite a departure from his other portrayals certainly didn’t hurt. Greg was a relatively obscure actor at the time, and I think both the character he played and the overall tone of the screenplay being a dark romantic comedy-drama with themes of homophobia, racism, misogyny, mental illness, and class divisions presented a more complex role. The movie was about three very different characters. Jack, Helen, and Greg were sensational; only two won any kind of award for their performance.
This really was such a tough year to win an Oscar and a great year for movies. As Good as it Gets, Titanic, Good Will Hunting, Men in Black, LA Confidential, Mrs. Brown, The Fifth Element, Wag the Dog, The Full Monty and Boogie Nights all came out that year.
One of my favorite movies and one of my all time favorite actresses. Helen Hunt really deserved it that year. She is a fabulous and convincing actress. One of my favorite lines from this movie is 'how do you spell conscience, no that can't be right, that looks like con science'....lol....
All these comments about Kate Winslet are hilarious. Prior to the Oscars, Helen Hunt had won the SAG award for Female Actress in a Leading Role (in any genre) as well as the Golden Globe for Lead Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Judi Dench had won the Golden Globe for Lead Actress in a Drama. Basically, Kate Winslet didn't have a chance in hell.
I think even Kate would agree that she didn’t deserve an Oscar for Titanic. She herself has said that she cringed when watching her performance, saying, “Really? You did it like that?” Helen did a great job at portraying a sensitive but tough Irish working class single mom from Brooklyn who doesn’t think much of herself, yet doesn’t take crap either. She captured the essence of her character perfectly.
Kate Winslet is fat! Those boobs are bigger than cow's udders. I don't know how she squeezed them into that bodice. Needs to lose some lbs. Typical Britisher probably loves her cakes and tea. Work out, Kate.
I LOVED HELEN HUNT FINALLY BEING NOMINATED, & THEN WINNING ! Not only is she a wonderful, totally committed actor, she is completely the character she portrays ; she is fully, an actor's actor. And, in " Castaway ", Helen deserved -the Oscar, for her performance. Love, this woman ! ------MJL, 77 y/o
She totally deserved this in my opinion. The competition was stiff that year but it was her year. The whole cast was amazing. And the movie, although really hard to watch at points, was amazing as well.
Totally agree. A tough year with fantastic performances but Helen was at the height of her popularity, and delivered such a likeable and nuanced performance here. When handed the right material, she absolutely excels.
It must have shocked everyone in the room that Kate Winslet didn’t win. But I’m glad to see Helen winning an Oscar. Edit: I can see now what everyone is talking about in the comments, and it does make sense. The Academy didn’t like to reward gloss then, they awarded talent. It’s about the performance.
livia gherasim I just mean being that Titanic was such an insanely smashing success with 10 other Oscars won that night, people might have thought Titanic would’ve swept.
@@lewisedwards4058 The weakest part of Titanic, though, was the acting. Leo didn’t even manage a nomination. Winslet was considered lucky to be nominated.
@@livia469 correct. The roles were totally different too. The way they were written worked against Winslett. Titanic was an overblown soap opera. As good as it gets has a beautiful arc to it and flashes of sheer brilliance. Not just the narrative but the dialogue. When Carol asked Beverley "what do you want?" you could feel her desperation. It was rivetting. My sister said she thought it wasnt authentic. I disagree strongly.
Great performers allow that suspension of belief necessary to become absorbed into the story. That you can forget the actor and believe the person they have created. Helen Hunt is one of those performers.
