What were you expecting?! It was quite clear from the very first announcement that the Switch version was the N64 original emulated, and the Xbox version was a remaster with update controls.
Exactly, none of the N64, Genesis, Snes and Nes games have modern controller settings... We all know there's no reason to expect it would be different for Golden Eye.
@@mikehall4730 the short answer? So you'll buy the N64 (and SNES, NES, and Genensis) controller There's no precedent on any of the NSO retro system that they have a modern controller settings, it's always a direct emulation NOT a remake or a remaster
I changed the control options in the Switch settings, and changed in the ingame settings to 1.2, and it now plays like a modern shooter. The only annoying thing is I have to change it everytime I want to play, and revert it everytime I'm done. At least you can save control profiles so at worst its a minor annoyance. Other than that, the increased FPS and widescreen support helps to make this a good port of the game. ^^ There's already several guides on RU-vid if anybody reading this wants to know how it's done
all of this is trash compared to the canceled xbox360 version which had better online support and better graphics and better control these stupid fucks at nintendo and microsoft fucked up all way round.
I haven’t played Goldeneye since the 90s. Spent so many weekends playing 4 player with friends. This kind of makes me want to play through the single player again.
@@Fifth313ment Just get an N64, and the OG game. Saves you money on the subscription model, and you own the games. Still have my OG copy of GoldenEye, and it still works fine.
For modern play: Go to main switch system settings>controllers and sensors>change button mapping. Click control stick settings and swap them around so left is now right and right is now left. Set ZR as ZL. Set ZL as L. Save these as a preset option so you can select this preset whenever you want to play the game. On in game settings (start menu in Goldeneye), change to controller type 1.2. Change ratio to 16:9. And change the look up/down to upright.
GameXplain posted a video showing a way to help modernize the controls using the switches remapping feature. Granted, that still doesn't excuse the lack of the option in the game outright. They already improved the frame rate and added wide-screen so it's already a different experience than on the OG hardware. Just odd that the option wasn't added in.
Initially I felt the same but I set the control scheme to solitaire and remapped the buttons and it handles just like a modern shooter. My only gripe is how sensitive the aiming is which will definitely make multiplayer more difficult. Other than that I had a blast on single player after changing the control scheme and saving it as “goldeneye” so I can swap the button setting very quickly
I'm gonna be honest man, everyone else was expecting this. We knew it was just going to be an emulation job since NSO+EP is just a glorified emulator. All they did for development was upload the rom file. They didn't even do any work to include multiplayer, they just used the normal NSO servers.
The game is 25 years old. The fact that it has been legally and officially released on modern consoles is nothing short of incredible. I mean this version of the game really shouldn't exist. MGM owning James Bond, Nintendo being the original publisher, and Microsoft owning Rare... They all made this happen. They probably all had to tip toe around licenses, copyrights, and trademarks for this 25 years old game. Not having to dust off the Nintendo 64 and play on an old CRT monitor is amazing.
You were expecting too much. Should’ve known what we were getting when this got announced as a title for the N64 app and not a standalone release/ remaster. It is a 1:1 release of the original game. Though I will say I do think the N64 app itself should allow for customization of controls and being able to save it per game.
That would be nice. I'm fine with how they set things up but never hurts to have the option. Remember the final battle with Gruntilda gave me trouble to the point I had to get a rhythm down to awaken the Jinjos and remap would have helped
You could change the controls for the switch version what you will have to do is go to the pause menu in goldeneye and change it to 1.2 solitaire then after that go to the switch system settings and go to controllers and sensors and click on change button mapping after that map the left stick to the right stick and the right stick to the left stick and map ZL to ZR and ZR to ZL and that way you will have modern shooter controls you could also save this button layout and select it any time you want to play goldeneye
That is the classic Nintendo cycle. Nintendo announces something very huge and groundbreaking, which every fan wanted for years. Everyone is brushing their fangirl ponytails, getting on the hype train, counting the days. Then the train arrives at fucking Nintendoland and they are shocked. 8 out of 10 times the result is garbage and most people are disappointed. Then the circle repeats again.
I think RGT knows this, but the faux outrage makes for a better video because chances are there are some people who still think and feel this way because they wanted something better than this... Rare took the time to sorta remake the game for the new Series Xbox systems... Nintendo just got a rom dump on their n64 emulator
Goldeneye on the Xbox is nothing short of amazing. As a 90s kid that grew up playing Goldeneye, I am super happy with the updated release. I know you got an Xbox man.
how is the nintendo version overpriced? youre not playin the same game as the 64 and dont have 64 controllers. xbox always sucks. nintendo always has and always will have the best games and design
The Xbox version is not 60fps (Most news outlets say it is). Using simple fps counting tools you can see that it's locked at 30fps that dips sometimes to the low 10's (Stays at 30 most of the time tho) with frame pacing issues. There are also graphical glitches and geometry glitches that are not present on the n64 or emulated versions of the game. They did the BARE minimum with this port and it shows. There's a beautiful XBLA version with upgraded visuals, stable 60fps, and has online matchmaking but they decided this port was a better alternative. Sad day for gaming.
Nice, an actual person that cares about the product he recives, can't believe I had to scroll this far to see your comment and with so little upvotes too...
@@linkssz1699 I just saw the developers twitter anouncment on the issue, You are correct this is indeed emulated and not a "Port". This takes the cake in laziness.
Speaking as someone who didn't grow up with the game, I managed to get used to the "Honey" controls," and enjoyed it. (Just the fact it automatically looks down when you go down stairs is helpful for those of us not very into modern FPS games.) As others pointed out already there are ways to easily "fix" the controls in the Switch control settings, though it would be nice if they updated these NSO games to offer that in-game like WiiU Virtual Console did. Though, it does seem a bit unfair the X-Box version has new control schemes. In regards to people complaining that the game isn't a remaster... I don't need the game to be some major HD remake with a billion polygons added, and run at 400 FPS. I'm honestly glad they kept the original low polygonal graphics as those are the games I grew up with, and the kind of games I loved as a kid. (I don't understand why people can love old 8-bit pixel graphics, yet hardly anyone has appreciation for early polygonal games. I love Pac-Man, but I don't think it has better graphics then Goldeneye. ) And just the fact it has online play and widescreen support is nice and impressive for a NSO game. Just the fact they got the rights and licenses to legally rerelease the game is a miracle, and yet people can't even appreciate that... It's a shame to see a once beloved game get so much flack. It's like how people say Super Mario 64's camera is "terrible," yet honestly it was the first 3D game to have a decent controllable camera system, and the camera rarely was obstructive or awkward like other 3D games in the 90s.
I can't test that out atm but if you can map multiple controllers on one user it should be no problem... but if the switch UI doesn't allow for that then it looks grim for multiplayer.
Man it works like a charm! It actually was so fun to play that i beated 7 missions in one go. Polished textures and framerate are neat. But as other people are saying and even Rgt, we shouldn't be messing with the controller settings just to make this playable. Well i hope they update this but for the time being i'm gonna keep this preset saved as "goldeneye"
The Xbox version feels amazing. With the changes it seems it’s never aged. Edit: only local multiplayer (I don’t care as I’m a boomer), amazing frame rate, some high res textures in guns (even though the ammo count and reticle looks janky). Modern controls (two thumbs) are a chef kiss.
@@602Technician420 it’s all on the edit I made. I don’t really care, as I’m 37. Just enjoying it for what it is. And if I want some quick hyper online multiplayer action, I’ll hop to Warzone 2 or DMZ
N64 controls are Trash, always have been, always will be. I’m happy that modern advancements has fixed this problem. Unfortunately you can’t fix bad decisions by Nintendo…
Doom, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark. It was always this control scheme. It takes 12 seconds to fall back into it 😂 he must not have really played it back then
I wish it had a modern controller scheme, online multiplayer that wasn't split-screen, and that you could actually buy it on Switch instead of renting it for an insane price!
SwitchUp shows a good way to change the controls on their Goldeneye video that seems to work well. Basically switching the sticks around and setting aim and fire to L2 + R2
I 100% agree and the trick where you use the Solitaire scheme and remap some buttons doesn't really help because the default sensitivity when aiming is still atrociously high with no way to adjust it, the reticle still constantly snaps to the center as soon as you try and make any adjustment to your aim, and the way they handled online play is just completely ridiculous. As it stands the Xbox version is far superior, and this is coming from someone who generally loves and preferd the Switch over other consoles for the portability. I wish I could play this on the go but it's just unplayable on Switch no matter what you do with the lackluster control options.
I've been playing and i'm quite happy with it. I remapped the ZR to fire and that's all i really needed. Meh, i don't know what you're all expecting out of a port of the N64 rom. Bro you're acting like in the past people bitching about fightjng games using negative edge but then complaining when they used SF Controls because then they're SF clones 🤣🤣🤣 Bro you gotta adapt, i can using normal style, claw mode style, Armoured core style with the controller turned around, i can do negative edge controls on a Keyboard with WASD as my directionals and then switch to SF controls on the fly and i'm no hardcore gamer AT ALL... What the heck is wrong with you people's brains?
I played this game hundreds and hundreds of hours when I was a kid was my favorite game. I'm so excited to try it when I get home from work! I might run to store if they have a 64 style controller. I guess I could just hook up my 64 lol
The ''Modern controls'' of the Xbox version broke sidestepping and diagonals, on top of the broken sound, frame pacing issues and graphical glitches. There's a reason Nintendo kept the controls stock, you can't change them without breaking something. The Switch version is by far the best one right now, specially with the N64 controller or remapping the buttons.
Goldeneye was the first FPS i'd ever played and loved. Over those first years, i got used to that control scheme, so much as to use it during Halo 2 (Legacy controls). But with the onset of so many 3rd person shooters, like BotW, RE7/8, GoW, TLoU, i've just come to love inverted X and Y. It's insane that in 2023, not all game offer this level of camera control.
Yeah, the Xbox version plays great, I'm close to saying that it's even better than the N64 version mainly due to how solid the performance is on Xbox. I just finished the game on Agent, now I'm going to finish it on Secret Agent then 00 Agent. I could just do one playthrough on 00 Agent but I want to get the most play time out of this game because I love it that much.
For me, I think it would’ve made sense to have online play for both and for your option to use whatever control you want in this day of modern gaming. It is disappointing, but I’m happy that they were able to work the single player game over.
Xbox doesn’t have online multiplayer because they would have to program Xbox Live into it whereas Switch Online already has online thru its service. Clearly, they were not going to invest that much into this with the licensing alone being a nightmare. 🤷🏻♂️
I fully agree 👍. I grew up playing Goldeneye and have been looking forward to this game for a very long time. I only played through the first 2 levels, and I struggled through both, I've tried multiple controller configs, but none that worked well enough. It looked like I was drunk playing this game, lol 😆
I'm with you, it's almost unplayable. If I want to look left I shouldn't have to move left. The right analog stick just makes the camera go evert which way
Managed to get it working ok with some button mapping trial and error but deffo agree with your points. It feels like it’s Nintendo trying to get us all to buy the n64 controllers, that are never in stock!!!
I changed the settings and it works 98% like the original. Changed the in-game controller to 1.2, then created a special controller map in the Switch settings just for Goldeneye.
This game should’ve been released on ALL platforms with online multiplayer. Sony would have definitely brought the Classic game back to prominence. These companies have ruined everything because of egos basically
I was so excited for this. My all time favorite game as a kid but ended up so disappointed too. The control fiasco on Switch and the fact we can't get online matchmaking in the year 2023 is insane.
It's a port of the original game how much online gaming was on N64 .??? Y'all ask too much from something that is as advertised . It's on the N64 emulator for a reason
It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a modern control scheme, but idk why you would expect Nintendo to rework a whole new control layout into the game when it seems they have just been dumping games as is into nso. If they were modifying the games I would’ve expected them to change Mario 64’s button layout to the 3d all stars layout but seems like they are just dropping the games as they were originally on the n64.
@@terminalpower. that would it wasnt emulated. emulation keep it as is. now, it does mean they could have implement button mapping in the emulator itself instead of the console... but thats kinda redundant.
you know with the extra money for the "expansion pack" you would hope that they would have matchmaking online multiplayer. I hate it when company's assume that we have friends.
I hate the button layout on switch too but i just found out a way to make it someway enjoyable. Go to system settings, go down to controllers and sensors, go to change button mapping. Then go to change one whatever controller you're using, change your Lz to R and your Rz to Lz. Then when you aim its the left trigger and when you shoot its the right trigger like modern fps games. And if you hate the inverted looking up and down like I do, there's a setting to change that when you pause the game. Your welcome switch users. Happy gaming 👍
You are not alone RGT. I feel the same way. I was stoked for this game. This was and still is one of my favourite games. I fully completed this back in the day in every difficulty and had every chest unlocked. Spent dozens of hours in multiplayer. However, I barely made it through the first level in portable mode without chucking my Switch at the wall. I really hope that playing with the N64 controller helps. Although, I doubt many will get the chance to play with that controller given how hard they are to buy. I waited almost a full year just to pick a set up. I am still excited to finally be able to play this game on a modern system. Any chance we get an update with controller options added in? I am doubtful. Maybe in another 25 years? lol
I think this rerelease was way more hyped up than it needed to be. I had a feeling once it came out there'd probably be this level of reality setting in.
I have both version options to play on. I am enjoying the Xbox version for single player. I wasn’t looking to play the MP much more than a few rounds online, so not a big deal for me personally. I also have to imagine that the online will eventually come to Xbox too. All that said, the Xbox version is really cool, fun and has appropriate updates. Nice throwback to play with.
I don't think it was hyped at all. If I wasn't looking for, I didn't see anything about the game coming out. It's exactly what they said it would be. That being said, they should have had a simpler way to activate modern controls in the game
I'm adjusting to it but it was really hard to start. Was getting smoked on agent difficulty. My biggest problem is that the manual aim is overly sensitive making aiming even more difficult and you can't adjust this. I usually turn auto aim off but with the way the controls are it really makes it harder. I'm still enjoying it for some reason though. It was hilarious starting though, I felt like a grandpa that's never played a videogame before
It was just as sensetive back in the day. I am so confused how this guy is crying about a modern control scheme. EVERY N64 game retains its original controls.
Yes, in the first mission, I was just feeling like my mom when we were playing in multi about 20 years ago and she was shooting rocket at the ceiling unable to play. Ah ah! But one hour later I started to get decent. And now I watched Nintendo Life instructions to change the controls to get it modern and it plays good.
It's not bad. It's a N64 app and that's what they gave us a N64 game, but better texture and I don't have to start my CRT dinosaur TV 😄, that's a super plus. Goldeneye have crappy controller, cause they were made to the N64 controller specifically, very different what we are used to play nowadays. When I first play it this morning they kill me in the first tower trying to shoot a guard and aiming to the sky and floor with super high sensitivity crappiness. It will be far better if they made the controller more user friendly.
Changing the schematics is completely possible (surely by now you’ve realized). And even if it isn’t what todays FPS is like, Goldeneye is a game of its own and the player should adjust to it and not the other way around. It’s the OG and should be respected as is
Funk Dat!!! I loved golden eyes as much as anyone as a kid and playing it now on the switch, I think to myself, I must have been a genius if this was how the control schematic was when I was a kid because on the switch, I can barely walk without the focus screen moving all the way up or moving all the way down or spinning around uncontrollably like warner bros tasmanian devil. One has to question the competency of Nintendo for not having a modern day schematic control for this game in this modern day and age😠😤😡🤬👺⁉️🗯️‼️
I don't have an xbox, and I waited for reviews for the switch version before buying. My biggest fear was that they would not change the N64 control layout. So you answered my concern. Thank you for the honest review.
Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are very different games. Goldeneye is very straightforward no-nonsense and linear action, Perfect Dark cranks up the complexity, usually in good ways but sometimes to its detriment. Each game clearly shares DNA but definitely stands on its own.
Perfect Dark was literally the spiritual successor to Goldeneye due to Rare losing the Bond license (which actually allowed them to take reaaaaally cool liberties w/ everything from plot to gear); everything Goldeneye did gameplay-wise Perfect Dark cranked up to 11. The single-player campaign alone was epic... Goldeneye is still iconic for what it accomplished but Rare was in their muhfuggin BAG for that follow-up
The controls were laughable at first but following a guide on mapping out controls, I finally revisited a game that I still have the cartridge to this day. Honestly, Microsoft/Rare should have known better with the control scheme even if I’m playing on a Pro Controller. Hopefully they can fix this.
As a 007 veteran who still has the original. I'm having fun with it "xbox version" it's nice to play without a cord and it controls fine to me.... my only complaint I don't think you can Turkey peek n shoot anymore, or I just don't know how🤷🏽🤣
Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were some of my favorite multi-player games on N64 from my childhood. Used to play both of them with my 2 older brothers and cousins all the time at sleepover or holidays. Btw anyone ever notice that The Complex was a level that was in Goldeneye and was also in Perfect Dark?
Totally agree RGT. As I watched that big red rectangle change into the Goldeneye box art I got very excited. Started a new game.... Them bam I'm looking at the sky saying "what's going on?". On another note Sean can you please do a video on the Limited Run Games situation. LRG recently sacked an employee for who they followed on Twitter.
I’m seeing people in the comments say RGT is expecting too much. Sooo you trying to tell me everybody here expected Xbox NOT to be online? Remastered in my opinion I thought would’ve been better graphics, online play, maybe extra characters or maps? This was bare minimum. They dropped the ball for sure!
You have to customize the mappings on the home settings (swap the analogue sticks around) and adjust the control settings in game... there are ways around it, but it is convoluted for sure
I feel pretty much the same about all the N64 games. Been wanting to run through the Zelda's again but the controls honestly bother me too much. I haven't even booted up the app in months and don't plan on renewing the sub unless they either update them, or announce some other feature outside of these.
I was expecting janky levels but goldeneye still holds up. Once you get used to the controls the game is amazing. The level design for each level is still so good.
I played the Xbox version last night & I couldn't put it down. So many great memories with that campaign & popping achievements while playing it is so awesome. No online play is a bummer but I was looking forward more to playing through the campaign so I'm happy 😊
Remap the controls for the pro control swapping the analog sticks around then save it as a preset. That way you can play under the solitaire controls and it feel normal
The Xbox version of Goldeneye really is just a better emulated version of Goldeneye but is still pretty much just Goldeneye upscaled to 4K and maybe slightly cleaner but it's not leagues ahead of the Switch version in presentation...text is still low res and weirdly scaled and textures are not improved in anyway except for whatever the Xbox emulator does to clean up things but they are not higher res, just be aware of that. But the good news is it controls the way you would think it would make sense transitioning from an N64 controller to the Xbox controller right off the bat... way way more natural than the Switch's default control scheme which is AWFUL
I'm just going to have to disagree with you. Look as far as I can tell every single game that has been released on the NES, SNES, Genesis, and N64 threw the switch online doesn't have some kind of modernized style that allows it to work with any of the current controllers you have. For example when I play NES games I use my GameCube controller because of that big a button for jump, but when I'm playing SNES games I use my Pro controller because the face buttons on the right are configured more like a Super Nintendo controller. Once again when I'm playing in N64 game I would prefer to use the GameCube controller since the a button is jump in the various platformers and the Mario party games and such. In not a single one of these games did they ever modify the controls to be adjusted for whatever controller you are using so how can you expect them to do that on GoldenEye?
Another issue is that you cannot aim around the screen should you want to target specific areas. Instead while aiming, the crosshair will stay in center and you have to move yourself to aim.
Having played both the switch version and on Xbox by now, I don’t know if it’s just muscle memory coming back to me or what, but the switch single left analog control and other controls just feel so much more natural than the Xbox version. I’ve played it on my switch so much more due to this
The application called parsec will always be king of online play. Mapping the buttons is the hard part tho. You have to sacrifice some of your time to configure the game. One time only, then jump on as much as you like.
First - To me, sound like that you don't have nostalgia, that you never play the game, that you aren't a fan of this game. You say "I have here", but not say, "i like", "I love" etc, on the N64. "How dare that old game don't have modern controls profile". That game has the literal fist game with that kind of controls scheme. If you "played" on N64 you know is that how that game works. "That's is not how we play video games, that's is not how your brains are program to play video games...", no, that is exactly how that game play/works. Second - Differences. To me, is unlikely that they do this by mistake, I think that have something contratual, but why? Why can't be played multiplayer on Xbox? I play it back in the day, and love it, finish 100% (And I still have with me), that game is very good, but I think what you wish to say, is that game's mechanics (or control's scheme on your case) don't age well.
I can excuse the Switch port. The N64 Switch app is just supposed to have the N64 emulated games. The fact that they did anything extra like the widescreen and sharper graphics and multiplayer is just all extra. WHAT I CANNOT EXCUSE is Nintendo handicapping the Xbox version. In 2007 they had the XBLA version with all the improved textures and quality of life improvements. I guarantee Nintendo is behind them not being able to release that one. That part pisses me off!! I want the XBLA version on an actual console!
I just switched the controls and I am feeling really comfortable playing on the Switch. I have no issues. I already unlocked the Aztec level and currently going through all of them in 00 agent.
Goldeneye was literally my favorite game growing up on the 64. Last night when i tried to play it i thought my brain wasn’t working right and i realized they really screwed up on the controls of the game. I dunno how they could of released this game expecting people to totally change they way they play. I’m super disappointed and i can’t play it until this fix this problem. Keep us updated if they do fix it please! Hope you are feeling better 🤙🏽
I definitely feel what you're coming from I love 007 GE and I when I was a kid and recently bought a Nintendo switch OLED to play pokémon Violet and 007 multiplayer but no modern control set up makes it garbage I'd rather go out and buy in 64 and play with my friends that way then this new garbage I'm more than likely going to sell my switch now.
Totally agree RGT 85, controls suck, don’t really wanna keep having to mess around with mapping controls every time I wanna play goldeneye, a modern controller scheme option for players who don’t own or want to buy a N64 controller is a no brainer imo, I can’t get my head around the controls due to having modern fps controls engrained in me, limits accessibility, I just wanna play the game, not rewire my brain and train myself to use a different control scheme, the controls don’t feel natural at all
Seeing the n64 controller on screen .. dang yo I wish they restock the controller for the switch ...and if the controller was in stock do you think the controls is will make a difference in game play on this?
its due to the emulation properties on each console (the reason why xbox has no online) NSO has emulation with online multiplayer via the expansion pack mimicking local multiplayer but online. The n64 emulator on the xbox which the devs used does not have the ability to play go online at all so it wasnt a decision, it was a technical limitation of the xbox n64 emulator.
I don't remember the name of it, but I kinda liked the one that emulates what they did in Turok with the C buttons, it's a little weird at first but once you get used to it, it's not so bad. *I'm* just pissed they took out the button input codes for the cheat stuff over on the XBOX version. you CAN still unlock it all but you have to speedrun the game! I barely beat the first level in time after almost a dozen tries but the later levels are just gonna be worse I don't wanna have to grind all that out! I mean at least let us have the multiplayer cheats especially since it's local only, geez.
change the control scheme to 3 in-game. remember that Goldeneye was made with N64 controller in mind. Either switch the controls to number 3 or get N64 classic controller. Problem solved. At least the Switch version has online multiplayer! Glad to see you back on video man!
The fan remake for FarCry 5 was modern and 4k. The unreleased 360 version was several console generations more advanced. This is all we get after 26 years? The only part that isn’t a massive disappointment is Rare giving it away.
Totally fucking right. I played it on my xbox this morning and was having a blast. My son got home from school this afternoon and wanted to play it on his switch. Then he asked for help with the controls and I looked and was baffled as to why it was updated on the xbox but not the switch. The sticks are totally backward with no option to change them around. Terrible.
