Between 2000 and 2012, Goldman Sachs provided Greece with risky financial products in order to hide the country’s public debt. This allowed Greece to live beyond its means, ending in a near bankruptcy. Goldman Sachs earned a few hundred millions on the deal that made the position of Greece within the European Union untenable. Is Goldman Sachs responsible for the decline of Greece?
What happened in December 2000 and June 2001? Goldman Sachs gave the Greek Ministry of Finance tricks to bring the public debt closer to the 60 procent-of-gdp, the limit that was set by the EU in 1992's Maastricht Treaty. Both Goldman Sachs and the Greek government considered this to be business as usual.
‘Everyone did this back in the days’, is their reaction. The European Controller Eurostat was also informed about this and saw no objections to these forms of financial engineering. It worsened Athens’ case and the austerity measures that are hitting right now a population that hardly understands how the country got to this point. Greece's debts are enormous and now Greece is under the control of a troika of the European Union, the IMF and the European Central Bank. This situation caused the first crack in the ideals of the euro zone.
Director Alexander Oey visited New York, London and Athens to investigated this case.
With: William D. Cohan, author of "Money and Power: How Goldman Sachs came to rule the world."; Nomi Prince, former partner and managing director at Goldman Sachs; Nick Dunbar, a financial journalist at Bloomberg; Yanis Varoufakis, Greek economist; Christoforos Sardelis, former head of the Greek debt management agency; Petros Christodoulou, succeeding Sardelis as head of the Greek debt management agency.

vpro documentary I simply love the research and investigative quality of your documentaries. keep up the good work. It's very rare now a days to get a broad non influenced or unbiased point of view from a media outlet VPRO is really a good filter of reliable material in my book.

Would be nice if they would tell us who is talking. The subtitles DO tell us what is being said in languages other than English, that is good.

Well... Tsipras is currently convinced he won't need any more help from Europe in 2017/2018: www.ekathimerini.com/221475/article/ekathimerini/business/tsipras-greece-ready-and-determined-to-exit-bailout-in-2018 And there's also this (but we do not endorse the content of the article, only sharing): www.cadtm.org/The-Road-to-the-Greek-Hell-is www.businessinsider.com/greece-to-return-to-debt-markets-for-first-time-since-2014-2017-7?international=true&r=US&IR=T

Adding music to these kind of documentaries is an obsession, apparently, but it doesn't add any value...it's disruptive, distracting and annoying...like going to a concert and having someone speaking at the same time.

I wish documentaries would go deeper than this, expose, unearth and shock with obvious things everyone knows but never talks about. How confused, strained and illusory human world is, hanging only on literal stories we tell and repeat ourselves, individually and socially.

Yea, AIG was so stupid that they took the bet??? And I know a secret place in the desert where a tree sprouts actual $100 bills. :)

AIG had profits for years before the crash, and when they crashed they got 85 billion in cash from the government, I bet AIG learned its lesson and will never do it again.

Hello Tom, Thank you for letting us know, we do our best to provide subtitles in English, French and Spanish, but sometimes, errors happen. Have you tried to toggle the captions? If you had the captions on, and there were still no subtitles, would you mind telling us the timecode when it happened? That way, we can fix it.

Lovely documentary as usual, but I have to note the absence of lower-thirds giving names and presentations of the guests. I really like to see them on-screen. Their names are listed in your video description, but it is still considerably less convenient. This is merely a detail in an otherwise great work, of course.

Hello Berthe Buidin, It is good that you share your impression with us, your feedback is important. All our documentaries were originally made for the Dutch television, with hardcoded subtitles and other information. For our international channels, we worked on the videos in a way that all the Dutch hardcoded information wouldn't show...and that's probably the reason why some names have disappeared. But we try to keep all the information up to date in the description of the video. It isn't optimal, but updating every video manually would take us too much time and work. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we will try to improve this in the future. We hope to see you again on our channel. :)

This is what happens when people accept the awful invention of money to be part of life, un aware that humanity can totally live peacefully and happily without any money at all

do you live in a small cave on the mountain? how did you get wi-fi there??? do not get me wrong, I am just pointing out that we are all good in theories but when it comes to reality things are not like that.anyone can preach against it, but nowadays everybody needs money to survive. if you wish to change the society structure, you can lead and we will follow.until that time please continue to use the wi-fi benefits

you obviously seem to have no idea on how the global finance system works, so your comment is being ignored.Greece need money like every other country. Goldman created its need for money and of other countries''. Have you understood the documentary?

Greece should reconstitute the monarch to make it possible to live the EU.Why? politicians can do anything for power and political mileage.A monarch does not need any millage cause there will be no elections in the next 5 to 4 years to get them out of power. That's why Brexit went so smoothly in the UK.
