Now that a Grexit seems to have been averted, and the strictest cutbacks ever have been announced, Greece is entering a new chapter. The welfare state is dismantled even further and all state property is weighed and sold. What dangers are lurking, and how will the Greek sellout change the country? Over six months after taking office, the new Greek political leaders reluctantly have to admit that they have lost the battle with the European creditors. Other ideas become more important. But what are those other ideas? Backlight elucidates three painful options for Greece.
Captain Fu Chengqiu is in charge of the Chinese-run port of Piraeus, the container transhipment at the gateway to Europe that has been run very successfully by COSCO, a Chinese state-owned company. It is booming with economic activity. The gold and copper mine of Skouries is a paragon of Greek dilemma. The mine isn't Greek, it's Canadian. To get to the ore, a large part of the land is excavated. And the gold is not extracted in Greece, but in China. There is a great deal of opposition. Greek MP Kostas Lapavitsas believes that the Greeks should take matters into their own hands and stop relying on, what he calls, foreign interference, whether it comes from Europe, from China or from Canada.

things like workers rights, sick pay, days off and so on for them are barriers, for us are human rights that our previous generationf fought for, and all the godamn EU who works on behalf of the usual banking families does not like this. Best thing for our greek friends, get out of monetary union. Ops, they tried, but ignored, I wonder why... Besides, from this documentary it seems like all Greek problems come from China. How about talking a bit about EU treaties, Mario Monti, Draghi, and IMF, and how the euro works? second one I watch, very incomplete and for this reason won´bother to subscribe, there is much, much better information on yt, this is throwing dust in people eyes.

One of the biggest misleading misnomers in this modern era of economic growth and progress is the correlation between investments and jobs. The locals are vandalizing your cars because on the one hand they envy the position you're in and on the other, they resent that they themselves don't have jobs but will not hesitate to go down to the beach and lay in the sun all day, then go drinking and eat out at a restaurant in the evening and this is done even though they are unemployed. So although hundreds of millions are invested in the mine, very few if any jobs are available to the greater general population which creates even more push back by a struggling proletariat. I got the sense of a disconnect between on the one hand, the chinese manager who was saying he did not think that greeks were lazy, yet I could see he was looking over the beach goers with a sense of disgust and anxiety. Like, how in the fuck all hell are these people so relaxed when their country is in dire straits. We have that here too in the U.S. and if you noticed the fat overweight kid decked out with head phones calling out to his friend, didn't have a care in the world about his future or the future of his country, it's someone else's problem, not mine. I'm fat, dumb, happy and spoiled, living in my parents basement playing video games and as long as I'm being fed, all is well kind of attitude. Those textile and metal punching factories are no longer up to date and cannot out produce product as efficiently as factories overseas, they are also competing against cheap asian labor, automation, computerization and robotics. The son who was more interested in playing the stock market knew that that was and is the future of money, business and the means of production. He had his fingers on the pulse of The New Commanding Heights, and did not want to struggle to keep a dying dinosaur alive any longer. The former employees standing outside in the hot sun are wasting their time, money and resources. It is triply sad though to see even highly skilled and educated people like the engineer and the electrician unable to find viable employment. The world is changing with relentless and merciless speed and those who are unprepared will simply be left on the sidelines to be idle and to perish. We're all on our own and need to take responsibility for ourselves, our lives and our families or be faced with the specter of poverty or even extreme poverty.

Chinese amortizing the debt+ operations costs = a zero profit each year = no taxes, Did the Greek government give the Chinese a sweetheart deal, if so what are the terms. When you are dealing with a Chinese business, the first thing you learn is signing the contract is only the first step in the never ending negotiation.

@35:59 once the production line is shut down, it is very difficult to run it again. the skills of the production workers will become outdated and lost through the passage of time. it will be very difficult to assemble a team of production workers again, especially in a country whereby the population is ageing rapidly.

I have another video including the same scene at 2:34 without the captioning but full audio. The man says "safety first" then walks away. Now , with the captioning it says "thanks for the security". The worker is not a security guard and has nothing to do with security. Why this change? Have the Chinese bought off VPRO ? If they will change this, what else have they changed?

I wouldn't say lazy. I'd say the spirit becomes demoralised. The idea of self-improvement and growth isn't something the West is used to outside the USA (which is also being eroded when wealth is not forthcoming). The idea of a nanny state is to control dishonesty among the players. In any game: losers and winners will be the name of it. Commie (all the same) or capitalist (I'm doing good or badly). Some form of a safety net is needed for those players unable to find that winning formula. As a gamemaster: I want to win. Those losers are needed to do that. I want to keep them around. We do that for those in prison. Why should those unwilling to risk going there suffer? Copying that master that beat you (if an honest game) is the best way to go. Teacher and pupil.
@alphaomega1089

The idea of dividing your day into three parts is the idea of an economy. Earn. Spend. Sleep. What do you want to see in your life? Work towards that and not those you help. Not everyone can sacrifice that life (soldiers understand) for their country. No reason why you have to. I am shocked even in China their younger generation looks towards the West and believes they are being overworked and exploited. Pretend that company isn't there. What would you do to support yourself? Run a farm to eat. Buy a shovel and pickaxe to extract material from the ground and forge it into the goods you want. Jobs are far easier than doing that. Remember machines can replace you. Design one to replace you if you don't want to do that work yourself. Cars! Planes! Ships! It is a sad story how people refuse to see their job is their business. Adults shouldn't be acting like children. They are that nanny!

Pirates once captured a Greek vessel with the Cynic Diogenes on board. The pirates thought they would make their fortune by selling the Greeks off as slaves, but when they disembarked at the nearest slave market nobody was buying... the Greeks, said the slave trader, had a bad reputation - everyone thought them very obstreperous and hard to control. When it was Diogenes’ turn to be auctioned off he was asked what sort of work he could do: “Oh”, Diogenes casually replied, “ I’m very good at giving orders...”

Greece should reconstitute the monarch to make it possible to live the EU.Why? politicians can do anything for power and political mileage.A monarch does not need any millage cause there will be no elections in the next 5 to 4 years to get them out of power.That's why Brexit went so smoothly in the UK.
@Nancy20012

i think china figured out a good system. they took capitalism as its economic system (by listening to people like milton friedman), and authoritarianism as its political system. that's probably what needs to happen everywhere, to get rid of oppositional forces that would hurt a country's economy.

WW2 practically wiped 75% of the infrastructure in Poland in the 1940's would you agree? And communists took over for the next 5 decades also correct? The urgency to get rid of oppression is simply stronger in other nations than in present day Greece. That's what he was talking about. It doesn't have to be with guns. Poland's solidarity movement was a peaceful one. Although it did practically shut down the country. The strongest negotiating position is always to walk away and mean it.
