Goldwing GL 1500 Compu Fire alternator fitting

This is a video I shot whilst fitting a Compu Fire Alternator to my Goldwing 1500.
With short city trips I found that the original alternator did not provide enough current at low revs to keep the battery charged. This is due to not running at high revs for lengthy periods of time. Running at low revs for short intervals and using reverse frequently drained the battery quicker than the original alternator could recover.
The Compu Fire is rated at 90 amps and is claimed to have 2.5 times the output compared with the original.

Thought I would let you know that the battery has had full power starts even between long spells sitting in the garage not being used.

I would actually attempt this myself after watching this video and I was terrified just removing the panels one of the most informative and easy to follow videos I’ve seen on a Goldwing

Thanks Shane... I'm at Cowra, NSW... I am heading off at the end of the week to pick up the bike... it's down on the coast, about 7 hours drive from here... I will have a great opportunity to get the feel of it on the way back...Cheers

This was the best. I had at least 4 bike mechanics that told me all kinds of things except the truth, (they didn't know what was wrong and or how to work on a Goldwing) The Alternator i bought did not have the same plug so I used a clamp wire nut. Took me about 30 minutes altogether. Thank you. My bike is: 1999 Goldwing SE Anniversary Edition

Hi there. Thanks for taking your time to pass comment. The battery does not come out far enough to easily get a spanner or screw driver onto the negative terminal without risking damage to the seat vinyl. Your absolutly right that the nagative should have been first. In choosing the positive I was vigilant not to make contact with any surounding metal. Probably should have provided some better explaination there. Thanks.

One of the problems of older wings was stator issues, all that can be contributed to overloading the electrical, by lights and such. same for alt and battery. keep all that in mind when adding lights and what have you. I would consider l.e.d. light to be more practical and less draw on elec.system. I'd reconsider such a high amp producing alt as compu-fire for my gl1800

I was nervous about attempting this but I did the whole thing in about 30 minutes...90% of the time was trying to figure out how to Tetris the thing out and then back in.

Suggestion, Use a stainless steel star lock washer on that battery connection on the alt. And I used them on my battery connections too. my neg. got loose, and I lost all power. the warning came a couple of weeks earlier when my neutral and side stand light went dim at an idle.

As a matter of safety, you should disconnect the negative first, so you don't accidentally ground/earth the wrench if it slips. And the reverse (negative last) when reconnecting.

I bought a mint 1996 Aspencade today... the previous owner said he had had issues with the alternator and had to have it rebuilt a short while back... he recommended that I try to source a Compu Fire Alternator and get it installed.. I am guessing the USA is the only place I will get one from?... Cheers

Great video thanks a bunch! I wanted to know if your alternator was still performing normally after this time...I ask because I want to replace mine on my 2000 SE, however my dealer's mechanic does not recommend it because the last 2 installs of CompuFire he performed the alternators only lasted 1 month...the customers complained and given that the manufacturer only guarantees the alternator and not the labor costs of installation my dealer lost money on these...so they decided never to install them again...I know it is simple to install I plan to do it myself but at that cost for a CompuFire alternator I don't want to spend the money if they don't last...so how's yours performing so far? Martin

Martin Arial Hi there. I don't have my 1500 having sold it and now have an 1800. By the way I think I liked my 1500 better. So the alternator did not let me down in the time I had it. I think the question to ask is how much power, from lights and accessories did the ones that failed have. Sorry I couldn't give you a more definitive answer, only that I have not heard of any failure.

Shane, This video was exactly what I needed to install my CompuFire. It was embedded on a forum here in the States. What's the reasoning (or advantage) to having 110 Amps instead of the stock 55?
@80sPhoenix
@80sPhoenix Год назад
Is like when having a shower at home while another family member is having a shower in another bathroom. Water pressure will be split and both will have a not good shower. Having more water pressure will allow everybody to have a proper shower. Look at the water pressure as the Amp, and the showers as the electrical components of the bike.

Hi pyrofella I'll get back to you on the exact amperage, however, as I remember it was the same as the original but doubled with the spacer. Hence doubling the amperage. PS. Have you had a look at www.goldwing.com.au/ I am in this club and they are a great bunch. We are off to Beechworth Vic - Australia Day

what am I watching? what idiot increases his MAIN FUSE just because he increases his alternator. I've seen plenty of wing harnesses melt from idiots doing this. The wings wirering is rated 55a, it draws what it needs, if it decides it wants more than 55a you are fucked. The increased alternator amperage would only benefit for direct connections to the battery and keeping up charging your battery at idle. Compufire is also pretty unreliable, not my first or even second choice.Basic knowledge come on man
@SystemsRunning
@SystemsRunning 6 лет назад
Funzo Support Appreciate your comments but I was only following the directions provided by Compufire. As was the fuse provided by them. Incidentally everything is protected by the standard fuses contained in the fuse box before the main fuse. The current output of the Compufire would have blown the original fuse if the battery was below 10.5 volt. I = V/R I am sorry if this video has caused you so much anxiety to the point you have to use profanities and bullying behaviour. If the Compufire did not perform well for you, may I suggest you speak directly with Compufire to relieve your anxiety.
@elixier33
@elixier33 5 лет назад
why would you be dumb enough to replaxe the STOCK fuse with something else, you don't replace that the bike wasn't designed for it! How stupid can be people get. I am using an alternator twice this rating and certainly wouldnt dare increase amperage for a loom designed for 40. If that bike pulls more than 40a your bike is toast. Come on man BASIC knowledge. Basic stuff

His example starts out wrong. You always disconnect the neg cable before the pos cable. This eliminates any type of arcing and causing a fire or explosion or burnt tools.
