Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This RU-vid channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.

I think most people know what to expect from the major brands at this point. I don't really need Rick to tell me that Taylormade or Titleist make good clubs. Plus a professional fitter would help sort out the finer details of what you're looking for if you want something premium better than he can. I think reviewing these cheap sets, and lesser known brands is more useful and informative content from Rick.

Sometimes you see these "package" sets that are like 600-700$ and you just absolutely know that the guy would've been better off going the used club route. With these, there's no way you can beat the value. They look nice, nothing's overly cheaply made. Good on Costco for furthering the accessibility of the game.

Totally agree, I purchased my first set from a military Affees sporting goods store for just under $300.00 years ago around 2007, first time in everything for me with the game, an in-law showed me one time during an invite at a golf range. I picked it up naturally!! Anyhow the driver out shot 2 fellow soldiers pro drivers and they constantly play the game, one actually became irritated because he couldn’t believe it! lol I was just enjoying my accuracy on my landings, right where I locked my targeting with every swing lol My putting was dreadful lol

@@Pythonzzz As a beginner, you really can't go wrong with Ping G series irons. Obviously the older you go the cheaper they will be, but they are all good. If I were you, I would look for a good used set of Ping G400's. Get fitted at Edwin Watts for your proper lie angle as Ping irons are color coded. Black dot is standard and probably fit most average size guys, but if you are quite short or quite tall it will be different. I would also have your swing speed checked so you get the correct flex shaft. Wrong lie angle and/or flex will be huge disadvantages on the course. Just my 2 cents. I hope it helps.

Just a reference point. A 1970 magazine had an ad for a McGregor golf set. Three woods and 8 irons for $99.95. Given inflation the Costco price holds up pretty well.
@tigerman1978
@tigerman1978 Год назад
My first set of clubs was a wilson box set at a similar price and the driver was the first club to be replaced for me as well. Next was adding on some proper wedges, before I replaced the wood and hybrid. It really is a good way to start playing and figuring out if you want to keep playing and to learn a bit more about what you want and need from equipment you have no experience with and no idea what to look for. Once you learn a few things, the 2nd hand market is so much less overwhelming to use as well. The ammount of golf clubs you can find out there thats barely used is quite large if you know where to look and for what to look for. Also, as you replace things from the box set you end up having a spare set of clubs for someone who wants to start playing, someone who just want to go hit some balles and havent brought their set or whatever. My original box set has recruited atleast 2 other players the sport after I gave it away to a colleague

I think it’s important for package sets to have a clear upgrade path. As you progress your game, you’ll start with replacing the driver and hybrid, and the rest of the set will be more than adequate while you piecemeal a better set. That’s much better than the whole set being equally bad, so you feel like it’s not worth it unless you drop the wallet on a completely new set all at once.
@xTRUExiNsANiTYx

I think the clear path to upgrades from a package set like this is getting a driver, then wedges, then woods, putter, and if you’ve made it that far it’s probably time to get fit for some good irons.

My first package set was MacGregor, kept the irons for 2 years as they was perfect for me to learn. The woods were way too light and replaced them after a few months.

thank you for doing these entry level club videos! I bought a set of dunlop 551 from wallly mart 25 years ago, and having only played 5-6 times a year, and range time twice a month, they have held up well over time. re-entering the golf playing now, and my current level of do with an upgrade. any suggestions? currently shooting high 80s

We bought 2 sets of clubs from Walmart when we stayed at Southern Dunes club in Florida, as it was much cheaper than the charge the airlines wanted to charge to take our own clubs. We left them at the villa for the next holiday makers and we were well impressed at under $100 including bag.

I am going to be in the category of a returning golfer. Not played around for five or six years, never bothered with a handicap that I used to shoot between 90 to 100 in a round average. Once or twice got into the high 80s. This looks like a real ideal set for me

I appreciate you looking into package sets. Unfortunately I have 2 issues. There is not a Costco near me and also I don't think they are available in the US. I was wondering if you had some suggestions for someone getting back into golf for a package set. I've seen some from Strata and Wilson. Anything would be great. Thanks

Just a thought rick. As these are aimed at the beginner golfer. Would be an interesting review if you were to test the clubs with a ball that a beginner is more likely to use, like the callaway cxr power or srixon distance from sports direct. Would give a good representation of what you would be getting.

Great review as always Rick. Just one about the driver though; you didn’t mention that part of the reason you can’t get as much distance out of it is because the huge flex in the shaft, which is of course there so that beginner golfers who have a much slower swing speed than you can at least get some speed into the club head. Absolutely no doubt the materials are lower quality as well, but newbies don’t be too put off by the lack of distance Rick can get out of it, it’s suitable for you (for now) :)

Hey Rick, thanks for this video. I love Costco and buy tons of stuff there. I would love to see you compare this driver vs a premium driver with a regular shaft and 10.5 degrees of loft. I can't help but wonder how much of the 30 yards came from the driver and how much came from the fitting. Cheers mate.

I own about 20 sets of irons (yes, I know I have a problem), from high end blades on down, and Wilson Staff Ci9's are still my favorite set. They aren't long, but if a beginner can get a set, I think they are perfect beginner sets.

Rick, nice review and honest as usual. I'm thinking maybe with such a low price a buyer could seek out a very good used driver and sell the one from the set. But for anyone who just does a couple of corporate scrambles a year and isn't hard core, this would be just fine and look half decent in the bag. I'm wondering where these would rank with the other package sets you've tested from Costco?

Rick, Thanks for all the videos, mate! Love your channel! I was wondering if you had any advice for getting a starter set for a young golfer. I have an 8 year old (turning 9 in the spring) that I'd love to get started on the sport, but I'm just lost when it comes to what to look for in a set of junior clubs for a kid who's never swung a club before. Any help pointing me (and I'm sure many other dads out there) in the right direction would be super helpful!

I only started playing golf this year and this was the exact set I had brought. Since I got it, I had added a 3 iron from my late granddad's old set which still holds well, I have switched put my driver for a different one, a lob wedge was added very recently and the same day I am writing this. I decided to get a new bag, because of the bag kept twisting due to the part which folds out the legs

Hi Rick. Loved the video. Seems like a great package set that I would've bought myself if I was starting now. Unfortunately, I bought a few different budget clubs last year and this year to start my bag. I have the Slazenger V300 Graphite from Sports Direct and I'm looking to make an upgrade. I'm probably around a 30 handicapper at the moment because my consistency is awful. My budget is £100, and I was wondering what you think is the best driver someone like me can get for that proce point. I think I'm about average for club head speed and can still drive 230 yards on a good hit with this V300, but I think it's time for an upgrade. Golfbidder shows a few options, but one I heard on your podcast was the Cobra F range. If I spent the extra 15 or 20 pounds, I could get the F6 + and I was wondering what you thought about that particular driver.
