In addition to being a successful golf coach, Sam Golden is the inventor of the innovative and unique MNML golf bag featured in this video. The lightweight bag is made from waterproof micro-suede and includes a phone pocket for recording your golf swing, solar panel and cord for charging your phone on the course, a thermal cooler pocket, single-dual strap configuration, retractable stand, and magnetic (zipperless) closures. You can find the bag at www.mnmlgolf.com and on Instagram @MNMLgolf
I’ve known and followed Sam Goulden for many years. So, it was a blast to get to spend some time with him at his beautiful Manhattan Beach location and film a few videos talking about his Square to Square Swing Method - a simple way to swing the club that produces solid contact, a forward low point, and consistent results.
Right/trail shoulder movement in the golf swing is directly related to what your clubface is doing in the downswing. If your clubface is open, your trail shoulder is likely to be pretty high or more level. If your clubface is more square coming into impact, you'll end up with a low right shoulder through impact and beyond.
Special thanks to Scott Morgan and The Lakes At El Segundo for allowing us to film while in the Los Angeles area.

What Sam was showing us here was similar to Moe Normans swing, Moe did a single plane swing, bit his wrists cocked naturally (club face more square) It Works for Sam and you Eric looked like you found a jewel! I am 70 years old and I find this swing ideal for a simple swing! Look forward to taken this further Eric? Another great insight of our world of golf! Many thanks!

Man. You guys nailed this. The right shoulder is everything. I’ve recently started playing with my right shoulder lower through impact. I specifically did that to allow me to hold the release off a little longer. No more hooks. However, I can still work the ball either direction, and not worry about too much curve. This move is a must for controlling the face. Great stuff, guys.

As someone with a high right shoulder at impact (your standard baseball swing), this is a magic move. The ball finds the left side of the course a lot less often. This should almost be titled "how to stop pulling the golf ball with proper trail shoulder movement". Great stuff.

Love that idea that doing it the 'suboptimal way' technically means that your movement is somewhat extraneous to what you are trying to achieve and only has any relation to the desired shot and target for a brief moment. In contrast, adhering to this simplified template for what you specifically need for the shot/target/impact/flight is great because people are gonna slightly shift back to their tendencies anyway so why not endeavour to achieve this lack of excess unnecessary movement knowing that when making a dynamic move it will never be rigid, BUT you will be much closer to perfect having this in the back of your mind. I can hit it a bunch of different ways but when I start gaining a few strokes, this is the clear template i need to get back on track. Similar to what you were doing with Milo, starting at impact/short swings. Man Eric I am hyped about your videos right now!! This was awesome! Thanks!

Great video here because of the importance of matching mechanics and the observation that there are no must dos. I happen to think the best way to do things is to either be slightly open, best, or slightly closed and then keep it stable with low shoulder always hitting fade, best, or draw. When we try to ride the knife edge of "square " we can't eliminate a side of fairway or green because both misses are in play. The genius of having only one curve is very powerful. It basically doubles your miss margin. If you have adequate power the fade best for green holding..
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Thanks! One way curve is huge. The second key principle I teach everyone....along with eliminating the "big miss" in that phase. 1. Solid contact 2. One way curve and eliminate big miss 3. Speed/distance And of course plenty of short game throughout :)

Question: What about the left side of the ball - after impact? I tend to lose all sense of follow-through after I feel I’ve made impact with the ball and I finish awkwardly. Super instruction as usual, thank you! The bit that I don't get though is if we're meant to be kinda holding the face square through impact, ie no manipulation of the club face, arm rotation, etc, wouldn't that for a lot of people result in a big push right? Cheers Andrew
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Hey Andrew! Sure....if your clubface is not square to the arc coming into the ball. Not if the clubface is more tilted down on the downswing like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5XXY_9ozEl4.html you dont need to have as dramatic wrist conditions like DJ to have face tilted down. This may also help here Andrew as Marty and I discuss in detail what is NEEDED to have this style release and NOT push it right: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2nOKt2uclRw.html

I feel like getting the hands high will influence the bad in this. What about a feel of lower hands? More connected to the body? I’m starting to finally get out of the old tired arm swing and feeling it in the body more. I feel like my arms really don’t move that much compared to usual and the feeling I wanted was having my hands lower. But that kind of makes me feel these things. Instead of feeling the contact in my hands I feel the contact weirdly in my core and legs now. It feels like the ball is springing off my body instead of feeling it low compressed sliding of the club face vibration in the hands

But I feel like I need to preset the trail shoulder at address and feel like I'm laid off and coming over the top in the downswing to get to the ball. It has been said that Rory' McElroy's trail shoulder in relation to his head, going into impact, is as if he is holding a cell phone between his shoulder and ear (area). This gives a compact right side "power pack" for delivery. Your thoughts please. Thanks for the video. Does adding a little lateral side bend at address assist the golfer in keeping that trail shoulder low? High right shoulder demonstration reminded me of Rocco Mediate.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Yes he's a good example of right side bend and neck tilts! So is Tommy Fleetwood! You dont want to add it more at address to get that....no. Only a very little right side bend at setup (through rib cage like 2-4* with 8 iron). You lose that for left side bend during backswing Then re gain it to start down with forward bend So adding more at setup not the way. I talk about that more here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7pbkEuD0NiE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CEsxQyxMM_w.html

pre five lessons we were told, in tommy armour's book etc. that the left hand and arm guides and the right hand and arm release thru; but, we should do entirely the opposite to that. but, of course, there should be no conscious effort to release the club with the left hand. in fact, we shouldn't even think of trying to hit the ball squarely. in modern fundaments, hogan, told us square the club up by supinating the left wrist. and, you can do that if you have hands like his. but, hogan, himself abandoned this method in the latter part of the his career. and, really when you strike thru with the right arm correctly it will lower the position of the shoulder
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Lots of ways to get it done....it gets hairy when we start talking about FEELs vs what really happens. There is NO FEEL that is correct or incorrect in general (but can be for a specific person) I've shot 65 thinking about my left hand/side, I've shot 65 thinking about my right hand/side. I've shot 65 thinking about nothing, one thing, 3 things. etc. Lot of ways. Depends on what ACTUALLY happens when someone thinks it
@DASH1ful
@DASH1ful 4 года назад
@@CogornoGolf any feel is correct. but, what isn't correct is the idea that the left shoulder must go up when the right shoulder drops. there should only be a sense ot rotation in the left shoulder thru impact. not that there should be any conscious effort to rotate the shoulder. but, when you try to actively lower the shoulder in the hitting area you run the risk of falling back on the shot. however, when you strike thru with the left side of the right forearm it activates the muscles in a way that they pull the right shoulder down. and, really the feeling should be that you try to strike thru with the left side of the right forearm from the moment you start down.

It could be any number of things causing this, but here is one simple thing to check which helped me reduce pulls: Is your trail foot pointed square to the target line at address? This can make your hips point left of target (for a right-hander) if your lead foot is even slightly flared open. Thus, the club path can easily be forced outside-to-in, and that with a square (to path) clubface will result in a pull. I found when I flared my trail foot slightly (and I emphasize "slightly"), it helped me line my hips to the target, as well as to more easily and consistently achieve a slightly inside-to-out club path.

What are your (and/or Sam's) view about not having as much height in the backswing? With this method, it's clear depth+width are good, but there isn't much height (compared to other swing methods/ideas).
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Hey Scott! Perfectly fine to not have as much height in backswing with this swing style. Also would be perfectly fine to have more height like a Jack or Bubba or JT....just have to match the pieces to that to make it work. All can work...have to make the puzzle pieces match. Lower lead arm with this style works well together....more rotation of body, less face rotation. Jack, Bubba, etc different model...different video at some point!
