How To Hit The Basic Chip Shot
Our CHIPPING VS. PITCHING video is a perfect follow-up view to this video. You can check it out here: • GOLF: Chipping Vs. Pit...
We had a blast filming with Robert McMillan at the PGA Golf Course at PGA Village (Port St. Lucie, FL). Robert has been a PGA certified Golf Professional for over 25 years and is regarded as one of the Top instructors in the Country. He played on the PGA European Tour and also qualified to play in the British Open Championship. He now hosts his McMillan Golf Academy out of Bear Creak Golf Club in Dallas, TX. You can learn more about Robert and his coaching at mcmillangolf.com/our-staff
In this video Robert and I are going step-by-step through the fundamentals of the basic chip shot. Nothing fancy here - just everything you need to do to make solid contact and get the ball on the green (every time!)

One of your best videos. I told a friend of mine who's struggling with chipping to STUDY this video and FORGET anything else he ever heard about chipping. He's used to a hitting motion with his hands and arms, which is hard to un-learn. This is the best chipping presentation I've seen. Thank you.

What a superb video. You break down all components of the chip shot into easy to understand segments. I know at one time you were close to having the chip yips, I’m at the same stage right now.. I am confident this video is going to help me immensely. I’m also having chipping lessons, and you use the same method as my coach. But it will really help to use your video in conjunction with his teaching, because you explain it so clearly and simply and I can watch it whenever I want to re-enforce my lessons. You are going to help improve my enjoyment of the game because at the moment being around the greens is destroying me. Now I’m off to practice. Great job and thanks.

Just been out in the garden/back yard practicing. Hit the best chips I’ve ever hit in my life. The ball was rolling up the club face, lovely crisp contacts. After years of suffering it felt like I’d scored a touch down in the Super Bowl or winner in the Champions League Final. I was punching the air with happiness. Other golfers who’ve suffered with chipping will understand. There is hope! Keep working and trying guys. Thanks Eric. Now all I’ve got to do is take it on the course ......

I watched this video a couple of weeks ago or so and have been implementing these techniques in my backyard and the few times I’ve played my chipping both long and short is ten times better. Contact is way better and because of that distance control is way better. My keys, stand a little closer left shoulder more down at address. Open club face a little in backswing but the key to me is clubhead exits to the left. That is the main key that makes this all work .

Another great video as I tried this yesterday during my practice and it went EXTREMELY well. Can you clarify the statement abt you "wouldn't do this with the driver"....would wouldn't want the toe up??? It's at abt the 11:07 mark. I thought with the driver you want loft....thanks for clarifying.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Thanks! With driver you want the clubface about the same angle as your back line. Just slightly tilted down. You want open for wedges for bounce and more loft Driver you want the face more square to the arc ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uoz5jvrsTMA.html

Hi, my strength is my pitching and chipping. I'm a plus 4 when it come to this. Now to me less is more. I agree with 95 percent of this and i do this myself but i study Jason day for his short game and it bloody works for me and people i have taught, now opening up the club face on the backswing is nonsense. To much going on and you dont do this in your full swing anymore so the chipping and pitching technique is a short version to the full swing. keeping the club face square to the arch is fuel proof and most top tour players feel they are cutting the shot or fading the chip shot and also in some cases fade a chip shot. What ever shot your trying to play. opening up the club face might work for him but so misleading for a stock shot. now it would be different it you was to do a high or more of a lop shot then by cupping the wrists in the backswing and keeping them there in the follow through works really well but i got this from a vid by tiger woods and this is a more advanced shot. sorry not a good video for you Eric

Great comments! much depends on the type of shot I am playing or who I am instructing, this video was more designed for a golfer who is definitely not a plus 4 like you, in general most average golfers chunk more than thin and have a difficult time getting the ball up and short with good contact. I have an advanced short game class that I conduct in Dallas mostly collage players and pros who attend this would be more the level that you would fit into. I remember playing with Seve and him telling me adding loft going back is good at the right time based on what you are trying to do and you are correct face rotation going back is perfect for flop shots bunker shots and short distance spinners.I wanted to show Eric during the video a great shot I learned from Seve called “Park the handle” however it was not suited for this audience in general, Seve played this shot at Turnberry off of a tight lie with 100 balls I could have maybe got a couple to stop short of the pin he hit it to a foot it was not a flop it went low and hit a wall (with a 56Degree sw not lob wedge)so I asked him what he did .weak right hand grip toe up add loft on backswing right palm to sky park the handle ...he was the best I ever saw.

When you said you should have the toe up for this basic chip shot where is the face of the club pointing? I'm still working on the shank/skull coming across the ball. Bring that magnetic device for your LIVE session and do the back swing on the chip shot. Thanks a zillion!!

this is perfect. i don'y think the average player understands how much the body is used for this shot. it's not all hands and arms. and whereas i can do this stroke just as demonstrated all day long, when i step into the shot...something makes me lower the club head into the ground. of course the speed of the stroke is not figuring turf interaction and i get the ball half way there. rrrrrrrrrr! work in progress.

Yes! I would keep it more toe up INSIDE of 30.... Then a little toe down okay starting with wedge distances....especially all shots outside of say 50 yards
@davidtheobald502
@davidtheobald502 4 года назад
The toe-up backswing to add loft tip doesn't seem to jive with the anti-slice face / wrist condition at first parallel of full swing. Is this because for a full swing you want the ball to come out lower (delofted) and longer, but in a green-side chip you are more interested in height (adding loft) and not burying the leading edge into the turf behind the ball?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Thats exactly correct! 2 different objectives (bounce vs leading edge) so 2 different techniques ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sHnzhGs7I4U.html

Great video Eric thank you. I do not accelerate with my arms after impact basically my arms stop at impact sometimes when I do 10 yards chipping and sometimes I use my right hand unnecessarily at impact even I know no hand activity should be involved. By looking at this video, I think I may need to pivot and chest rotation and extension to keep the arms and shaft beyond the impact. Would you agree? Thanks.

@ufukgoksu9851
@ufukgoksu9851 3 года назад
I think, I need to use more my arms and NOT MY HANDS during chipping. When my hands (particularly the trailing hand) take over at or before impact, the hands speed up the arms and hence arms do not continue through as they should and also they get bent. As soon as the clubface hit the ball mostly by the hands and not by the arms connected, this causes lot of inconsistencies. I am saying this because I was doing 6 years ago or so almost no hand action and my arms were also much better extended...so going forward I need to feel my arms are in charge and not the hands in the context of chipping.. Now in full swing, I start with lower body of course and use more body motion but even here I should take out the hand action.

I notice when you finish the chip shot your right foot is planted on the ground and your left toe is raised up. Is this the standard move for the legs??
@CogornoGolf

I would say thats fairly normal, yes.

There is no stock position. It varies based on lie, slope, how much green to work with, and pin location. Every shot around the green is different, so a stock position is limiting overall to versatility.

You guys forgot to talk about two important things: ball position & left arm bent or straight.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Sorry about that! Here is more on chipping for ball position. I would say just back of middle for stock shots would be good Left arm will have some bend ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rMTw5aDTPzU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gRDGdkIyg8s.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LQLV1YSJNZ0.html

so well explained, I like the part about the butt of the club following the belly button. And Eric is very eloquent in explaining the swing in detail

17:15 mark, begin video. Here he summarizes all the important key points, thus avoiding too much dialect throughout up this minute mark. Great info though.

This ignores the design of the club ….why not just control the loft with the grip. Keep the club square and then control the club .
