Three Key Check Points For The Bump And Run
Seve Short Game Secrets
The bump and run is a shot all golfers should master. In this video Robert McMillan is sharing some of the key elements of this shot he learned from the legendary Seve Ballesteros.
We had a blast filming with Robert McMillan at the PGA Golf Course at PGA Village (Port St. Lucie, FL). Robert has been a PGA certified Golf Professional for over 25 years and is regarded as one of the Top instructors in the Country. He played on the PGA European Tour and also qualified to play in the British Open Championship. He now hosts his McMillan Golf Academy out of Bear Creak Golf Club in Dallas, TX. You can learn more about Robert and his coaching at mcmillangolf.com/our-staff

Hi Eric, you are so good in bringing over this so important fundamentals of the short game. I am quite a low senior (55) handicaper (6.9) from the Netherlands and have been working on short game a heck of lot! But you beat every good teaching pro on this! Thanks buddy!!

I watched this video last Friday morning and went and played my round in the afternoon at a friends golf club as a visitor and using your advice it helped me score 91 gross off a 21 handicap which is my best score in a long time. My home course is a links course so looking to use your techniques there as lots more opportunity for bump and run, thanks.

I watched Seve around Sunningdale in the mid 80s. Completely different class to the rest of the field in Athleticism and rhythm ,came nowhere! remember thinking what a weird sport golf was. Never thought Id be obsessed with it in later life!

@@CogornoGolf I also watched him hit a monster 3wood to the back of the 17th at the Bellfry, then duff his chip! then sink a putt for a birdie! The biggest surprise to me (not being a golfer then) was that little Tom Kite,the little geeky kid at school managed to half the match!

Just a thought when you get an expert on your channel maybe try letting them give the lesson and you chime in occasionally verses you giving the lesson and they occasionally chime in. In other words I would have loved to hear Robert more, he played in the British Open, nuff said! -- Not trying to be mean or a smart a-- but yeah hearing him more would have been great, hopefully you take this feedback on board for the future.

Thanks for the lesson. For this bump and run do you use your putting grip or your normal full swing grip?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
I like to use the putting grip....most like putting grip better as thats pairs up well with a more vertical shaft. Try both and see what you like best. Either can work!

So what about arm tension? I’ve been practicing this and have found that if I start with very little tension in my arms and hands, I tend to tense up to varying degrees.This of course raises the club various amounts. So I’ve begun to start with a tension of about 8.This seems to make it more consistent. What say you?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Hey! Good question! I would say loose arms in general would be good....firm GRIP with hands OK....but arms not tight... Talk more about that here with full swing and it applies same for short game ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VQ2fVOx6re8.html

Ok loved your video, but could you give me some ideas on when the to best play this shot. Course / weather / skill, whatever conditions.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Thanks, Dennis! When you have MORE green in front of you than fairway/rough to carry. For example 20 yard shot 16 yards green 4 yards rough Play bump and run and let it roll.

Eric when I use my 8 iron doing the chip and run I get back spin on the ball. Can you tell me why and how to get the ball to run? I learned about the front area of the club face striking the ball, never knew that, thought the middle was the correct spot. Thanks.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Hey! You will always get backspin. That is inevitable. You CANNOT hit a ball without back spin. You just will get less with 8 iron bump and run compared to sand wedge.
@TheGunnyUSMC

Thanks. Makes sense. Tried it on the course today and it worked well. Thank you.

Never thought about hitting on toe end before ,so I have a hard time getting the grip more vertical due to worrying about digging in the toe and twisting face out….I’ll def implement / try this next time at range ..

If there is no obstacle, just don't use a high lofted club for a chip and run. Simply use a 8 or 7 iron

This is another awesome video BUT, compared to others by you Eric, this is one where you maybe didn’t give Robert the chance to speak as much as you have other guests. It’s still a brilliant video, but as an interview style it wasn’t one of your best. Still love your stuff 💕
