It's good that Mike's comparison to other sports' moves makes it simple for people to understand, but it oversimplifies it in one important way. And that way makes the transition in golf so much more challenging for most. In tennis or in pitching your arm can go back much easier as you transition forward because you're using one arm. Your shoulder allows you to open up and easily do this. Even in baseball, you can open your shoulders early as you transition because it doesn't matter that your bat goes out (what would be over the top). In golf, you need more separation and your upper body can't unwind too early. Your hands also can't fire immediately. The concept is still the same, but there's much more to it and more difficulty in the golf swing.

Amen, perfectly said. I’ve been playing tennis for 16 yrs, and I definitely feel the relation of the release at contact, but the backswing in golf is much more specific and dependent on the timing/rotation.

Check out Ben Hogans book....he has a chapter on the downswing which breaks down how you should begin that transition.

Yea... but to hit a homerun, you kinda have to do it like a golf swing, to increase the efficiency of the power to send the ball over the fence. Mikes probably only talking about a baseball swing that will hit a solid home run or a 3rd base hit.

Powerful!!!!! Just solidifies what I teach. I never use the word "shallow" or shallowing" in my golf instruction. Also, it is so true about how everyone is so built differently and an instructor MUST pay attention , notice and then make the adjustments to that students needs. A good instructor needs to be creative and adjust their lesson on the fly and has to know hundreds of drills that he or she can use at anytime to meet their students needs. Thank you Eric and Mike.

Define transition: Ben Hogan defined 2 planes that are different. The backswing plane that is steeper than the downswing plane. The transition is when the hands transition from the backswing plane to the downswing plane. The Hands!!!!! Concentrate on the weight of the golf club and golf club head. In the transition the club head swings from the top of the backswing behind the hands. There is a time when the weight of the club gets behind the hands and pushes the hands forward toward the target which is exactly what the golfer needs. Otherwise the golfer is fighting the weight and it will defeat the golfer. That is why Mike says don't get quick. Wait on the weight to help the golf swing. If you fight the weight you will lose. Wait on it(a split, split, split second) and then go full force. Hogan described the downswing plane, after the transition, as a back hand basketball pass. Mike describes the transition as pointing the handle of the tennis racket at the ball(watch the left elbow). The description of what happens instead of what causes it, upper arm rotation, can be confusing! Get it on plane from the top, rotate the upper arm bones, let gravity help, feel it, then go. Sequence! Sequence feels like transition time! Mike's explanation of transition is lacking important details so I am filling in the blank spaces. Good golf swings are in a large part the result of a good transition. Ben Hogan says that he never understood the golf swing until he understood the 2 plane concept, thus transition.

Good reason why this video is at the top. As a former pitcher and player I get the movement forward while the club is dropping behind, 17:42 example of Sergio is excellent, I “think” my needing to flip at the bottom is bc of my grip, weak…. The water skier and boat analogy of opposite forces is another example I’ve always remembered.

From 2:00 to 4:20 in this video, Mike Malaska gives the best explanation of the weight shift and change of direction in the golf swing that I have ever seen anywhere - the weight shift (or the downswing) starts as soon as you begin to take the club back. His examples of hitting a tennis forehand and throwing a baseball instinctively cause you to feel how the weight shifts into the front foot as soon as the hands start to move back on the takeaway. I'm a 9-handicapper who struggles to get all my weight into my front foot at impact. This video lesson has really helped. Thanks.

The videos with Eric and Mike teaching are the best out there.👏👏👏 At beginning of takeaway I put little force on inside left foot and femur area for stability. When I'm abt to complete backswing, [transition here]👉as my upperbody is inclined a bit to the right, i bend over a bit towards the ball at the same time my left hip starts to push back movement (straight line forces). Then, left hip is out of the way and I can do Malaska's move👉 "hands down club head out" creating tremendous amount of club head speed. I feel my hands and grip going in between my legs. (Of course is a feeling) I don't feel turning hips at any point. Because "turning" is an effect and not the cause. Just feel straight line forces of push back and push back of the hips. Finally I figured it out and hitting solid bombs!🥳 Obs: Do not work on position picture only, work on whole movement with forces applied.

I believe it is key to understand body movement impact on club movement. Mike's explanation of how the arm rotates in the shoulder socket and minimal forearm rotation is great! But I also believe we should always remind ourselves of the importance of the feet, knees and hip movements necessary for a good swing. As Hogan said, "the most important thing in the golf swing to me is the movement of the lower body from the top of the swing." I would say Hogan left out that the feet, not just the knees and hips, are also part of the equation. And the movement of the lower body is also important in the back swing as well. Too many of us watch instruction that focuses on specific arm, hand or shoulder movements and we get off track because we forget to stay focused on how the lower body should move. If we include the key upper body movements with the correct leg and hip action, we will get a better swing.

@@CogornoGolf For sure. My point is, instruction tends to focus on one or two things and fails to remind us of this. I've come to understand that the role of the lower body is extremely important. Beginners and high handicappers need to learn the movements required to provide the torque and speed that occurs when using the feet, legs and hips to create ground reaction force to power the arms and club. The rope drill ingrains the proper movement.

So many teachers and coaches have referred to the 'magic move' as the right arm and elbow coming down. I'd argue that the magic move is really that initial move back towards the target, where the hips and shoulders are still turned (or turning) away from the target. Mike Malaska illustrates this move at 4:24 a couple times. If you watch his hips, they're shifting, but still very closed to the target. I think that it's this move that allows the rest of the swing and swallowing of the club to happen naturally. Without this 'magic move', the rest of the swing is, to quote Mike, a band-aid on a band-aid.

I've heard this move referred to as making a figure eight with your hips. You are re-centering or shifting to your lead foot while your body is still closed to the target. Getting your lower body firing before your upper body completes the back swing is key to this concept

I am a left handed person who plays right handed and I have never heard this reverse motion idea....this is brilliant because once you start the reverse from the top you're done...then its all small muscles making corrections. If you start the reverse with just the left hip without turn you slide in front and get stuck. I love this concept of transitioning with a force and turn to get out the way and let the club shallow down the line....great stuff guys.

I have one observation regarding the tennis forehand the baseball batting and pitching vs the golf swing regarding where the downswing starts. Throwing and pitching you use one hand and the two way stretch is very early, but like the tennis forehand you do not go back as far as you do in the backswing and batting in baseball the bat is already close to the top. When I watch eric swing I don't see the early start of the downswing, yes it starts before the backswing ends, but is that not partly momentum, as you transition you can't just stop a movement it gets slowed by the reverse pull of the lower body and thus the two way stretch. Playing a straight drive in cricket you move the front foot forward while the bat is just starting back, but again that is a very short back swing. I just can't see it in your swing as early as you say, maybe you could show it being done filmed with a high speed camera so you can do super slow motion so the early transition is in plain view.

Good comparisons to other sports, makes you remember to be athletic with the golf swing, rather than robotic like it is easy to tend to be when trying to focus on so many different "proper" aspects of the swing.

Excellent content as usual. This is precisely how it goes with the hands and shaft. Eventually the shaft starts to shallow specially when you hit it hard. When the shaft goes under the plane Mike starts to steepen it with the hands. Eric and many teachers may open the body to counterbalance the excessive shallowing move. Isn’t this right?

Thank you both for the great video. At the point of transition when the hips are starting the downswing, does it make sense to push the golf club away from the body (backwards) a bit? I'm thinking it does but I'm no expert. For me this seems to create a stretched and loaded sensation. Any comments on this are appreciated.

Once again I’ll say EXACTLY! It tires me to no end when I see other guys putting this move into 30 pieces and videos to either get more views or try to get people to purchase the connection. It’s complicated but it’s simple. lol The toughest thing to figure out is to understand the individual feel of each person. If you play the ball like it has been shot at you or your trigger begins the back and forth motion you’re good to understanding the forces required. Good luck to people who haven’t played multiple sports though. lol

Eric, great video! Just an observation. Watch the segment early in the video when you have the side by side swings. The golfer on the right has his right elbow pointed toward the ground through out the backswing. I’m coming to understand through my own golf journey, that this is crucial. Cheers.

I understand the concept of starting the DS/transition as you start the backswing, but it is difficult for me to do when my brain is given 2 tasks to do at the same time. The golf swing is and should be dynamic, but the other sports are very, very dynamic in the sense that the body is always reacting and moving, while the GS has your feet planted and you're not reacting to anything. For me it's difficult to get this motion going even though I'm very athletic and coordinated. What drills do you have that will help the body to do these opposing motions at the same time without thinking about it. Thinking too much has always been my biggest problem in the golf swing. How do you engrain the swing without thinking about it. ZEN Golf channel on YT emphasizes swinging without thinking, but I'm still struggling with this. Thx for doing these videos. You and Mike are the best at your craft.

The equivalency is shifting weight from the trail side (right foot/leg) to the leading side (left foot/leg). If you're a right-handed golfer. 😉

Vast majority of ams come down with a steep shaft plane… so this drill would be catastrophic for most

Definitely way more players too steep than too shallow. Only players I see that are too shallow are usually very good OR they late shallow because to steep early Good convo here to get the thoughts out and explain everything

Look at Mr Malaskas swing at 12:08-12:10, dtl view. At impact his pelvis is square NOT OPEN , his shoulders are barely open and his right arm has disconnected from his body and is almost straight. Do you swing like that or do you want to teach an impact position like that .?These problems are a direct consequence of his standing the club up in late transition and his misinterpretation of how to move his torso 12:36. Standing the club up anatomically is INTERNAL right shoulder rotation which is opposite of external right shoulder rotation . INTERNAL right shoulder will steeper the shaft, while EXTERNAL right shoulder will shallow the shaft. Rib cage rotation has a steepening effect for the body while his incorrect interpretation of sliding in the downswing has a shallowing effect for the body. The problem for MR Malaska is if he had a strong and correct rib cage rotation he would be swinging outside /in . This is all because of trying to stand up the club .

I would say to be extremely careful with this move, it is correct as long as previous moves with the chest and arms are correct. Meaning this move can't be done if the shoulders open from the top or right arm separate from the top.

More people need to understand this before taking golf advice from videos. A lot of instruction is advice to exaggerate things based on feelings and the individual golfer's movements, and the feels don't match the reals. Record your swing.

The whole tennis/ baseball thought process has a psychological downside. It makes the trail hand more important in the minds of a golfer and triggers a swing from the top.
