When we’re talking about rushing the downswing, we need to separate body segments. Golfers who rush the downswing are moving their arms and hands down too fast, but not necessarily their lower body. So, you don’t need to slow everything down to stop rushing the downswing. In this video I’m giving you two feels/drills to learn how to get the downswing started with your body motion first and slow your arms and hands down.

use to shoot in the hundreds, then got frustrated and quit. decided to retool entire game from ground up...so for 2 months I did nothing but watch RU-vid videos (mostly ERIC) and hit the range. wow what a difference that made. now, I'm a bogey golfer and hit in the high 80's low 90's and it was amazingly quick and easy. now I am focusing on becoming a 70's golfer and am super confident. Eric, you are amazing.

This video helped me so much with my consistency right away. Got a lot more distance too. My arms were always going ahead of my hip turn causing my lead knee to lock before hip rotation and standing up topping the ball often. Excellent tip, drill and explanation. Thank you, Eric. This explanation makes so much sense to me. I can feel my body working with these drills. Eliminating tension has been the other thing I’m trying to do. The harder I grip the club and tighter I feel the more I rush my swing. I want a smooth effortless swing but it’s all out of sequence. I was doing better before the last lockdown but as a fairly inexperienced golfer have never truely understood the body feels of a good swing. I’m keen to get back to lessons again.

Great set of drills here, as a man who lighted a ton of weights in my younger years its been more difficult to feel that that stretch in the left shoulder and arm. "Big muscles are great for bending bars but useless for hitting golf balls" Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 1995. These specific drills have giving me a totally new feeling of where my power is being generated from. The sequence of movement has allowed me for the first time to check if I'm doing things in the right order, from the top of the back swing. I just wanted to say, as someone who watches a lot of golf video content, your videos are a huge step up from the rest of the stuff out there. Most of it is just way too general and the same old descriptions of movements that frankly don't help. The problem is and always will be in golf lessons that we each feel things differently. My recommendation to all is find one or two teachers on you tube and stop there, too many ways of describing the same movements will only make things more confusing and less helpful after a while. Great job on your video Eric truly a step up in terms of usable content that doesn't hold back on the "secrets" or info that's at the heart of each issue. I'd love a full on lesson but times are tuff and the coronavirus is everywhere. Stay safe America, and the world. we are in this together.

It’s all good, Eric. I know the feels or sensations you suggest here. I have had them, and they worked beautifully, for a time. I suspect something else crept into my swing that sent me off in search of a new swing key that would unlock my inner Hogan, such as John Jacobs or Jim Flick telling us the only way to reach our full potential is to swing our arms. I am 74 years old and my search began with Hogan’s five fundamentals and every Golf and Golf Digest

I’m a high handicapper going through a swing change now. A swing coach told me that my active arms and hands were causing me a lot of problems with control. This video was incredibly helpful. The drills that reinforce the feeling you want - combined with the physical feedback you describe (bicep pressure on pec) helped on my first trip to the range. Now I need to groove that feeling and break those old habits. Thanks!

Great video Eric, this is exactly what my problem is. I can get it right about 3/10 times. When I do it’s a beautiful feeling to see the ball go where I want it to. I will try both of these drills today, the pause at the top is something I try to do but tend to forget when thinking about all the other aspects of the the swing.

This is an absolute game-changer and has given me more insight into the mechanics of the swing. I wondered why I had to almost stop at the top to get solid contact and yet great players seem to swing in tempo and fluid with speed and power. It's not that I was rushing, it's my sequence and mechanics were incorrect. When they are off it feels like I am rushing but when I keep my arms in place and properly rotate the body first I have solid contact consistently and never have to think about pausing. This is another reason why I am a member of Eric's site and a student of his teachings. The improvement in my swing and game has been the greatest in the shortest amount of time with Eric.

This is spot on. Most amateur golfers need to learn to hit the ball with their lower body - dead arms that are moved with lower body motion, not the other way around. Very difficult to overcome after years/decades of trying to generate speed with arms/upper body. Takes thousands of reps to start to build new muscle memory.

Another great Video Eric. Thanks a lot for that. What helps me here is thinking of doing the transition, means the start of the downswing at the same speed as the backswing. This feels at the end very slow and is quite difficult as you really need trust in you swing (especially on shots over the water :-) ). But the same speed on backswing and downswing-start/transition leads to a perfect sweetspot = a lot of distance. The downswing is then lead by the though of moving/walking through the ball (as Gary Player uses to talk about). I think the transition speed is the key to play really good and consistant golf.

Not only does this seem to be a great drill for the rushed downswing but as I was swinging in my office at work (shhhh) I felt as though this helped me from sliding laterally. This is one of my major faults amongst others. As soon as I get too the top I feel very uncomfortable and can’t wait to release the tension with my arms. I also fire and spin out the hips at the same time not really getting the pressure to the front. Sometimes I feel like I’m never going to get the sequencing right, but I’ve had this video bookmarked forever and keep coming back to it over and over trying to improve. Eric you are a fabulous coach. You explain everything so clearly and how you teach really resonates with me.

Took me so long to embrace this. I just couldn't come to grips with the idea of "stalling" the hands and arms and rotating the hips to start the transition. It felt so unnatural to me and I just couldn't get on board. Now that I've fully incorporated this concept into my swing the difference is pretty remarkable. I feel less like I'm swinging *at* the ball and more *through* the ball, if that makes any sense. I'm also far less prone to hard pulls and fat shots, and my smash factor and compression are way up. Good stuff here.

I’m dying to try this drill. I’m a lefty and hit my irons pretty well, but I have always sliced my drives. I’ve tried a ton of corrections with my grip, club path etc. I did notice when I slowed my back swing down, the slice improved. I never thought about the knee turn, but I can see how it help that downward swing path and perhaps straighten my slice. Going to give a go this weekend!

This was epiphany for me...Yesterday I went 2 holes birdied the first hole a par 5 par , stuck it to 2' ...Par on the second. Then went back to my old ways. The feeling I had tho for those first 2 holes was the first in 33 years where it felt effortless and perfect. I'll get out on the range and just work on this feeling...I always get a kick of watching something thinking about it , and than doing it even without practicing it...For 2 holes I felt like I couldn't miss. Thanks a lot for the lesson.

Brilliant Eric! I have never seen this explained anywhere else. I think I have seen this same move when major league baseball players are at bat. When should the left arm separate from the body? Thanks.

Eric awesome as usual really man good stuff!! Eric i was wondering if you have a class on contact at the ball ,, to me it all comes down to contact I feel if I don't get correct ball speed it feels horrible!! Thanks again Eric your the man!!!

Thanks, Kevin! We have A LOT of videos on a lot....contact included. BUT contact is too broad a subject....too many variables to guess why the contact may be off. Would have to SEE your swing to help guide...to identify 1-3 SPECIFIC things that need to be done to help contact...could literally be 100 things that could cause bad contact Check out www.cogornogolf.com so you can post your swing and I can see and help!

Thanks for effective explanation. My weekend golf always up and down and mostly 65% down as my chronic habit of snatching from the top of the back swing cannot be eliminated. Is there any best drill to do to remove my chronic bad snatching from the top? I once try like Matsuyama swing as I paused at the top for 2-3 second but it can do only at driving range and I still come back to get snatching at golf course that too terrible for me to change it. Please advise.

Hey! Thanks for the message! Unfortunately for this instance I think I would need to see video of your swing. I would need to see exactly what happens when you say you "snatch" it....that could mean a bunch of different things and could be caused by a bunch of different reasons..so I cannot advise based on just that If you don't get it sorted check out cogornogolf.com premium membership so that I can see your swing and can advise then!

Great video Eric, I’ve been using a Whippy Tempomaster to help smooth out my transition. You can’t swing fast from the top w a Whippy and make good contact

Thanks for this video-it's great. Feel like maybe a better descriptor is "starting the downswing before being finished with the backswing" is a better description of the problems, almost like throwing the automatic transmission into drive when the car's in reverse. I've noticed I do this when I get impatient on the course behind slower players and later in the round when I'm tired. Once again really helpful video.

Great video once again Eric, giving an explanation which I've not seen elsewhere. Can I ask would the same effect be achieved with the thought 'keep the R/shoulder back in Transition' or 'Keep your back facing the target as long as possible'? Regards James

Using the drill also with my left arm basically staying against my chest, helped me with my arms going out over the line. This was also a huge problem for me. I was a arms and hands player for years and changing to a rotational player has increased my distance and power but the old habits are hard to break.

Great video. Something I need to work on. It would be helpful if you also showed some slow motions of your swing as it is hard to really see what you are doing in your swing. It happens so quickly. I love how you explain what you should be feeling in any given movement.
