GOLF MK1: If you have a faulty or worn accelerator pump on your Carburetor, you may have problems with starting up the Engine and, it will only start after you have thrown fuel down the Carburetor throat.

One lesson I learnt is to avoid using silicone sealers when putting a carb together. Even the best ones are not immune to petrols long term effects. That stuff can end up blocking jets and Venturi's. Just use a bit of grease together with the gasket for an airtight seal.

Usually when that happens the gasket is not lined up properly,or the Phillip screw is not tight enough..I think there is also a small plastic grommet that fits in there

Hey PJ I have this pirate carb on my mk1 so i noticed when i push the throttle it doesnt squirt enough fuel it like squirts a tiny bit so i thought i could ask you for any ideas on how i can make it squirt some more please

Good evening sir. Non related to this video but I hope you can help non the less. I have replaced my left flickerlight on my car. I tested the bulb before I put it in but when I put it in I did not realize that the 2 wire touched and it blew the bulb out so I replace the bulb. After I replaced the blew out bulb with the new one none of my flickerlights are now working. I did check my fuses and the flickerlight fuse was melted but I could replace it with a new one. But my flickerlights are still not working. What is your thoughts on the possible problem?

Thanks for the carburetor videos'!! It seems to be a problem with golf's... maybe because Im just inexperienced... Anyway maybe you could do a video on noises the engine makes (and how to detect them), like tensioners', water pumps or alternators'😅 because I seem to have that problems 😅 also is it normal for the hydraulic lifters to make noises when standing for a long time? Engine is being serviced according to specs. Maybe this could make some more great video's!!

Hi there, Thanks for the video suggestion.. Yes the hydraulic lifters could make a noise after it has stood for a long time.... But noise shud go away after like 30 seconds.... Or in some cases only quiets down when engine is warmed up... Also ensure you use the recommended oil... 20w 50.

I have a leak on top of the rod from the rubber fust cover. is it an o ring seal amd can it be replaced without stripping the whole carb?

Hi .it's probably the rubber that sits at the bottom of the rod.and for that you only need to loosen 3 screws ,but it's best to remove carb from engine to do the installation. Leak can also occur there at top of rod due to the internal gasket leaking. to replace you need to take the top of the carb off

Hi Mr PJ Please help. My mk1 accelerator needs to be pumped twice for it to start the engine but when the engine is hot it just start immediately without pushing accelerator. So my question is, if i can buy a new diaphragm and put it on then the car will start without pumping the accelerator pedal??

That's a Carbureted engine sir. In most cases you will have to pump the pedal,and use choke, when it's cold ,at least once, before turning the ignition..With fuel injection you don't have to do that...I don't think you have a problem..That's just how carbureted engines work...It's only if your engine swings for too long then you may have timing issues..

Do you by chance use any sealant on the diaphragm? Mine seems to be leaking with a new one thats been replaced.

Did you replace the 2 small little o rings ..or maybe it fell out while you opened it ...just check on that

hi pj how are you doin.....i changed the AC pump on my golf one and its still stalling while driving its carb 1.6 i am nt sure wat to do coz its like starving n cutting of wen drivn especially uphills

Maybe you are over tightening the 4 long bolts.. And also the nut at front of airbox..

Sorry late reply, but not sure if I understand question correctly.. There's got to be ventilation of gasses from the engine, if not it can have negative consequences,, like blowing of seals, causing oil leaks etc...always good to Check on the Breather pipe/valves that it's not clogged up

My accelerator pump is leaking petrol, but car is starting fine. Does that also indicate that I should replace the rubber inside?

Yes.. If definitely leaking there, replace.. As it will get worse to the point where it will start having problems,.. And of course raw fuel leaking near the manifolds is a fire hazard

Thanks PJ. I have a little bit of that,my golf will start one day wind not the next. When i drive it backfires and the it will cut out at junctions so i have to over rev to keep it ticking over. It wont stay on tick over. 1989 Golf Gti Karmann Ghia. Thanks John

You may have an Airleak., at Base plate or the servo pipe.

If I understand you correctly... No fuel will be squirted down the throat of carb once you press your accelerator pedal.. That means there is a problem with the accelerator pump...., and that would be the diaphragm, which then needs to be replaced
